Kintamayama 44,837 Posted December 17, 2003 (edited) Definitely Wakaazuma, because it says so very plainly and in large bold letters on his kesho. May 2001, his only ever sekitori basho,he was 4-11. He retired after March 2003.May 2003 (Sandanme 16W) . Sorry to be a smartarse! (Applauding...) Actually, he quit in March and didn't enter May at all. Officially, his retirement came into effect in May, but I, through my special channels(hehehe), knew he quit in March.. There even was a mini-discussion if there is a "deadline" for announcing your retirement, after which you will be listed on the next Banzuke even if you do announce you're quitting.. This is what seemed to have happened with Wakaazuma. Edited December 18, 2003 by Kintamayama
Anjoboshi 2 Posted December 17, 2003 Musashigawa-beya keiko. Musashigawa himself (I guess) with his back to us, Wakanoyama (in white mawashi) oversees the deshi doing the locomotion, Dejima looks asleep behind the line on theright. Isn't that Tosanoumi leading the locomotion, or am i completely wrong? Anjoboshi
Kintamayama 44,837 Posted December 18, 2003 (edited) Isn't that Tosanoumi leading the locomotion, or am i completely wrong?Anjoboshi Well, judging from the guy's mawashi color only, no.. Sekitori wear white mawashi during keiko (like Wakanoyama in the picture). Also, Sekitori usually don't ride the train. (like Wakanoyama in the picture). Also, Tosanoumi doesn't belong to Musashigawa, and usually, the train is a local one only (Like Wakanoyama in the picture). An extra good look will find Dejima leaning against the wall in the background on the right,, thanking his lucky stars that he dosesn't have to do THAT anymore.. Hey, I already mentioned Deji in the image's description! ;-) And, no, I don't think it's Tosanoumi, not only because of the black mawashi and wrong heya, but the body is of wrong build... The similarity is purely in the face. Edit: nothing special Edited December 18, 2003 by Manekineko
Naganoyama 5,886 Posted December 18, 2003 Actually, he quit in March and didn't enter May at all. This is what seemed to have happened with Wakaazuma. C o o l response ;-) I guess that a rikishi only has to announce his retirement about 3 days after the basho for it to be 'too late' as far as whether the rikishi is listed on the banzuke for the next basho, given how soon the Banzuke Hensei Iinkai meet. Why is the word 'c o o l' when typed without spaces converted to 'cold' on this forum? I can't even type the question properly as the word gets converted when I do a preview. Rijicho 6 Posted December 18, 2003 Why is the word 'c o o l' when typed without spaces converted to 'cold' on this forum? I can't even type the question properly as the word gets converted when I do a preview. Corrected finally as I've been searching for a solution to this from a completely wrong place. It seems there was a forced cool -> cold conversion added to the profanity filter of the forum script. I have absolutely no idea why. I guess the script programmer might have tested the filter's function with this one and had just simply forgot to take it off when uploading the installation package. Or something else... Mystery... Kaikitsune Makoto 206 Posted December 18, 2003 I agree; below the knee Tosanoumi's legs are much thinner than those of the person in the picture. You should have participated in the sumo quiz some months ago ;-) Indeed Tosanoumi's calves are strangely thin for such a big rikishi! Also Tosanoumi doesn't do keiko at Musashigawa-beya. At least it has never been reported. Tosanoumi's keiko partners are usually visitors from Tomozuna and Kokonoe-beya which means KaioU and Chiyotaikai. lucky sekitori Sumanofuji, Luck usually ends when he steps over the threshold to juryo side. He has some horrible experiences in juryo. Prototype of predictable rikishi who isn't really manhandled that badly even in his 2-13 basho but he just often lacks something to turn the bouts to victories in juryo. It should be an interesting basho with so many Juryo promotees...normally I'd proclaim at least 4 of them (Sumanofuji, Hakuho, Daimanazuru, Tochifudo, possibly Gokenzan also) as "not good enough for Juryo" and a sure MK for all of them, but since these 8 guys will probably have a lot of matches against each other, rather than against established Juryo rikishi, maybe there will be some surprise kachi-koshi among them. Possibly even Sumanofuji. B-) Okay, that was pretty ;-) - sorry. B-) Edited December 18, 2003 by Asashosakari

I think Sumanofuji could have a reasonable chance as well.
Manekineko 200 Posted December 23, 2003 How do they expect me to work a day before holidays start? (Laughing...) My focus is shot, The Clash thunder through my computer's speakers (Punk rocker...), so this is feeble attempt to relax before re-attempting to work. I already know I will fail miserably. (Clapping wildly...) Something for everybody today - random pickings... Crown evidence that rikishi aren't just moving mountains of fat. (Heart) Mainoumi & Terao, two (In love...) of female audience - both now retired. :-) Notice the pattern on Mainoumi's yukata! (Laughing...) Opposites attract: Musoyama with world's smallest dog. I can't spell it properly, so I won't. B-) Minatofuji with a tourban... very stylish. Deshi streaming towards Nagoya-bound trains - a yearly spectacle. Takanonami looking very Nami-like, framed by impossibly lovely skies. (Bye, bye...)
Fujisan 532 Posted December 23, 2003 More great pictures Maneki- Being someone who hates crowds and who is prone to cursing aloud(under my breath though) I think I would have to learn some patience very quickly if I was travelling on that train station, thats for sure. How old was Terao when he retired anyway? I reckon he must have been nearly 40 yrs old and thats a good run isnt it.
Kotoseiya Yuichi 3 Posted December 23, 2003 How old was Terao when he retired anyway? I reckon he must have been nearly 40 yrs old and thats a good run isnt it. Born February 2nd, 1963 and retirement in September 2002. Almost 40 indeed.
Fujisan 532 Posted December 23, 2003 Thanks Koto, thats what I thought- According to my book of sumo he was 26 yrs old and the book came out about 14 yrs ago,so it was easy to deduce,I just wasn't sure when exactly he did retire.
Naifuzan 1 Posted December 25, 2003 I'd just like to once again thank all the ppl who have contributed with pictures in this thread. I just typed out 3 pics from this thread, framed them and hung them on a wall. Looks really nice =)
Manekineko 200 Posted December 29, 2003 Pictures! To make your new year happier. :-D First one for me! Hayateumi is back to makuuchi, if only thanks to division expansion. Here's a picture from his happier, healthier, amateur yokozuna days. There are Musoyama fans lurking among us, so these are for them! First, Moose in his Power Angel mode! Very manga-like. (Enjoying a beer...) And a rudely-awoken Moose starting his morning keiko... And finally, someone asked Kai-zeki in some thread (forgot which one) if he had a picture of young Kaio. Well, he didn't, but I do! Here he is, the image of athletic thinness! (Heart) And as long as I'm posting the young and lanky, here is even today lanky Tenho in his youthful days. That's it for this year, see you in the next one!
Manekineko 200 Posted December 29, 2003 And don't you think Ake looks mean (in a positive way) with the beard? See for yourself.
Kaikitsune Makoto 206 Posted December 29, 2003 When was that KaioU-picture taken? Never seen such a picture of him before and somehow reminds me of the time when I saw Kotokikutsugi the first time and thought "perfect sumo body..yokozuna!" and since KaioU is ozeki that means Kotokikutsugi will do big things in the future (Enjoying a beer...) KaioU already shows tremendous upper body strength in that picture so no wonder it was refined into present day omnipotence.
Manekineko 200 Posted December 29, 2003 Unfortunately I don't know when the picture was taken. (Enjoying a beer...) Long enough after his joining pro-sumo to grow enough hair for chon-mage...

Fujisan 532 Posted December 29, 2003 Two things- Im sure I've seen that Akebono picture on Americas most wanted recently- "Musoyama has some fans?" Well okay maybe but whos gonna admit it though? Im only joking so dont bite me guys!

You probably mean Kotoshougiku (talk about a really idiotic name change..), the guy somewhere waaay down in Makushita who you have been promising me for ages that will "happen" soon.. Well, the way things are going, I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you, since he is super-duper lame-o no goody goody.. As for U's omnipotence, well..hehehee.. I'd switch "omni" for "im", and that would look much better from where I'm sitting..

I agree maybe he's not a future Yokozuna, but I can't agree that he has gotten to the point where there is no hope for him, being promising for ages. Tamaasuka on the other hand...
