New kesho mawashi

Recommended Posts

Kintarō Ōsunaarashi 大砂嵐 金太郎 for the Natsu-basho will get a Kintarō (super-strong folklore hero) keshō-mawashi from the Shizuoka pref. town of Oyama, which claims to be the birth place of Kintarō.

The oyakata wanted him to have a shikona first name typical for Japan and took it also for the proverbial strength of Kintarō, who as a kid did sumo with a bear and won.

The new keshō-mawashi presented by the town mayor

Oosunaarashi showed off his new cashew-mawashi at the "Kintarou Summer Festival" yesterday.

Oosunaarashi was the festival's special guest, presiding over the naki-zumo and stuff. "I will be gambarizing whilst wearing this cute keshomawashi!!" he declared.

On display at the Kashiwa Takashimaya store till the 6th - a 10min ride on the local line from where I dwell, I think I will have a closer look.

I'm not that fond of this Facebook format, but it's the easiest way for me right now:

The closer look at Kisenosato's new keshō-mawashi

Morooka ordered that for Kisenosato from Takashimaya (their mark is on the kesho-mawashi and on the akeni to transport it) - Takashimaya let the Kyoto craftsman Hasegawa produce it.

Kise's hometown is close to Kashiwa.

The vanquished bear on Osunaarashi's kesho bears (no pun intended) a vague resemblence to Kumamon, I hope that's not a bad omen for Sadanoumi's chances against him if they meet...

If Osunaarashi makes yokozuna, I wonder if they'll let him use an axe instead of a tachi.

Another set for Kakuryu: white herons for the attendants and Himeji castle for him. Sponsor is the incorporated educational institution Miki-Academy. When Kakuryu was new juryo in 2006 he did a ceremonial shiko stamping at the groundbreaking ceremony for the school where he received the new set now. The contractor for the construction then was a member of the Izutsu-beya koenkai.

Kakuryu will get a Taiho style set (and more sets), with the flags of Mongolia and Japan and the kanji 「忍」(nin for Kakuryu's, endurance, the motto of Taiho) 「天」 (ten, heaven) 「地」 (chi, earth)

http://www.hochi.co.jp/sports/sumo/20140425-OHT1T50306.html

This set has been completed and was unveiled for the first time at Kakuryu's promotion party, displayed along with his other two sets. A fourth set of kesho-mawashi is in production at the moment, but probably won't be ready in time for the Nagoya basho.

Set 1: Crane and dragons.

Set 2: Himeji castle and egrets.

The 4th set for Kakuryu: white horses and the flower of the town of Higashiura, where the koenkai is located: u-no-hana, deutzia crenata. It was presented at the Izutsu-beya Nagoya-basho encouragement party on the 29th.

Endo will get his 10th kesho-mawashi from Seiki Community Group, which manages tutoring schools etc. - to be presented on the 7th at the encouragement party. 10 after just one year of being sekitori is a rare (but for Endo usual) thing.

Actually this is something I wanted to ask for some time now. Could someone with more sumo experiance and expertise say something about the numbers of kesho mawashi a sekitori gets during the course of his career? What's the average, what are past upper or lower limits...? What are the factors for the amount of kesho mawashi? Things like that.

Wakanosato got a new one after more than 10 years, his 5th: "At this age I may retire any time, but receiving it from the doctor with the wish "I want to have you continue even one day more" makes me really happy."
He'll aim for a return to makuuchi to show the new kesho-mawashi there as well.
"Among the 5 that I want to wear till they are shabby this is the one with most emotional attachment."

Another veteran getting a new kesho-mawashi, but one still at the peak of his career.
Yoshikaze got one from the agency Flagsport which retails the Italian brand mattress "Magniflex" based in Florence - and in return he was appointed advisor for it. CM and poster appearance etc. to follow. The mawashi shows the Florence cathedral.

What does happen to all mawashis upon retirement of the rikishis? Kept by them for sentimental values? Returned to the sponsors? Kept by the heya premises? Or mix of everything?
