Ama's father

Recommended Posts

I heard rumors that Ama's father a former zaan (sekiwake) in Mongolian wrestling died in a car accident.

Hopefully, they are just rumors and nothing else.

I hope these rumours are rumours and nothing serious happened to him.

I have read that it's true and Ama should be in Mongolia. Ama's brother Lkhagvadorj was injured too. (Shaking head...)

It's terrible news. Also seems like he won't make it back in time???!!! Of course, he could probably take the fall from M4e to come back in March to a double Sansho or Juryo Yusho, so no worries. I wish the best for him and his family. I think I've seen pictures of Ama with his father. He seemed like a very strong person. Ama is strong too; he will manage.

I'm sorry to hear about that. I saw him the other evening on T.V. and I thought he seemed very unhappy about something. Now I know. I wish him a safe trip home and hope he's back soon. I enjoy watching Ama fight.

The Japanese media have finally picked up the news. Sanspo reported that the accident occurred on a snowy street in Ulaanbaatar on December 27. According to a source at Ajigawa Beya, Ama's father died as did another relative that was in the car.

Ama is back home in Mongolia but plans to return to Japan on the 6th. He is in deep shock and has made no public statement but, according to the source, he will enter Hatsu Basho that will start on Sunday, January 7.

What a horrible tragedy.... (Eek...) My thoughts go out to Ama and his family. (Consoling...) I'm sure it will be difficult for him to focus on Sumo with this terrible incident on his mind.

I think we might see it increase his focus since his father was Mongolian Sumo Sekiwake or Komusubi (we've heard conflicting reports). Ama will probably go out there and give everything to honor the Father.

We saw a similar performance from Kokkai following his father's death, and that was coming back from an injury and no keiko IIRC. And of course Miyabiyama is always drawing energy and focus from remebering his father, though I was not actively following Ozumo when he lost his father, so I don't know how it affected him immediately.

Can anyone post pictures of Ama with his father? Ama needs our support, so I will send him mine.

Latest from Sports Hochi:

Ama's dad was on his way back to his Ulaanbaatar home from his hometown when the accident took place. He was a sekiwake of Mongolian sumo and worked as a police official. He was 51 (sankei has it at 48) at the time of his death.

Ama got word on the 29th and hurried home. Yokozuna Asashoryu was in Mongolia at the time and went to pay his respects. "I am sincerley concerned since Ama is a dear ko-hai of mine," he said. The funeral services are scheduled for Monday, January 8. Ama will not be able to attend since he will be participating in the Hatsu Basho. He will face Homasho on shonichi and Kyokutenho on Day 2.

no I dont think so, I think Ama will be "gambarize" immensely and fight well and fight focussed like his father probably would have wanted and expected him to.

A good porformance this basho would be no better tribute to honour his father.

Ama's father was not driving the car. He is said to be 48 in Nikkan as well.

Funerals are horrible abysmal and over rated affairs, Ama rushed back to pay his respects and support his family, just because he is not going to the funeral doesnt mean anything, he has found a better more positive way to celebrate his father than a sombre funeral. I respect his decision.

poor choice of words perhaps, but the big deal, the importance, the be all and end all of going people attach to attending one is often too much. Especially attending the funeral of someone that wasnt that close or you drifted apart or neglected some people feel that attending funeral, that one last effort will redeem their past, make up for it all, I believe in making the effort when the person is alive.

There are many ways to remember, celebrate and honour a person, a funeral is one, it is not the only one.

noone will think Ama didn't love his father because he didn't attend the funeral.

My opinion on funerals is a bit cynical ... i think they are only for the living and our need to express our grief with company (and sometimes to just look devastated in front of relatives and friends). If i died i wouldn't give a shit if anyone attended since i would be dead. It would just be a matter of image towards my family and friends.

If Ama feels that he mourned his father enough i am more than happy to see him continue his life as usual.

Several years ago Miyabiyama's father was in a critical condition during a basho and if I recall he passed away on Day 14 or so but Miyabiyama did not go to the hospital to see him. He was not that far away and possibly could have gone there and back in time.

We really don't know what he was thinking inside but he was telling those around him at the time, the best thing he could do for him was to do the best he could on the dohyo as in the hospital he could not do anything. He also felt his father wanted him to continue competing.

There are many people who cannot attend their relative's funeral for one reason or another or decide not to for whatever reason. Self-righteous can show their indignation all they want but the depth of sorrow and feeling is not relative to attendance to the funeral. Many attend for obligation only.

This reminds me of Kitanoumi. His shisho and father died only a day apart, right? And he wasn't able to attend both funerals as they were scheduled on the same day, so he went to the shisho's and no one (?) thought it was odd.

Warning: severely off-topic post! (while still on-topic)

The discussion about funerals reminds me of a joke quite popular in Germany:

At the football world cup finals in Berlin last summer, there was one man sitting next to the only vacant seat in the whole stadium. His neighbor got curious and asked about the empty seat.

"I got a ticket for me and my wife, but unfortunately she died."

"Oh dear, I'm so sorry to hear that. So sorry! But, the ticket, couldn't You bring anyone else? Friend, or family?"

"No, they're all busy. They're attending her funeral."

More details about the accident. As mentioned above, Ama's eldest brother was also in the car. He suffered contusions all over his body and multiple, compound fractures. He has been in the intensive care unit since the day of the accident but it appears that he is no longer in danger.

The car involved was a Japanese-made four-wheel drive that Ama had presented to his father. On the fateful day, it was driven by a relative on a 300 km trip from Ama's dad's hometown back to Ulaanbaatar. The car was passing another car on the road when it encountered an oncoming vehicle. In an effort to avoid a head-on collision, the car skidded on the snow-covered road and overturned.

When the okami-san heard that Ama was coming back to Tokyo, she offered to pick him up at the airport. Ama politely refused, saying it was not necessary. Ajigawa Beya has asked the press to refrain from bothering Ama as much as possible: "Please leave the poor guy alone."

Meanwhile, on shonichi, a sad but determined Ama won his bout against Homasho.

The concern has been about the death of Ama's father, but the dad of another dimunitive sekitori died on the eve of Hatsu Basho. Satoyama's father, who had been fighting a blood disease for the past three years, succumbed to the illness on Saturday in Kagoshima Prefecture. He was 66. Satoyama was home over the New Year's holiday to spend the last days with him.

The little rikishi said, "I last saw him on the 4th. My dad really loved sumo . . ."

Satoyama is at juryo 3 with a chance for shin-nyumaku. "For my father's sake, I want to do some good sumo so that I would ensure a promotion to makuuchi. He would be happy for me up in Heaven."

Unfortunately, on shonichi, the sad but game Satoyama lost his bout to Shimotori.

Oh... (Laughing...)

Life can be...you all know...

I wish both power to get "over" it. Loosing beloved people is the worst thing of all.
