Some more pictures

Recommended Posts

Well, I've stumbled on few more pictures you might find interesting, showing rikishi in the way most of us isn't used to seeing them. All pictures are from Sumo magazine, kindly scanned and sent to me by Hahanoyama-zeki. On with the show!

This one is for Onnagumo-zeki, and any other Forum members who have an especially soft spot for K'waka. The picture was taken during winter 1999/2000 Okinawa jungyo. That's K'waka's son in his lap, his wife on his right. Careful observes may notice Hayateumi on the top right, dozing beside his akeni (luggage).

Kotonowaka.jpg

I hope you recognise this dashing young fellow. Yes, Asashoryu, in Mongolian-sumo dress I believe.

Shoryu.jpg

And couple Mongolians more. This picture was taken in 1992. I have no idea who the one on the right is, but the other two are Kyokutenho and Kyokushuzan, as shindeshi (newly entered pro sumo).

mong1992.jpg

More shindeshi! Can you recognise these three valiant Makushita-tsukedashi (ex university yokozuna enter sumo at higher rank than usual)?

tukedasi.jpg

Did you know Hamanoshima loves fishing? Here he is, with a fine catch, and his hair down... looking incredibly handsome, if I might add...

(Happy...)

fish.jpg

And in the end, Akinoshima, *smiling*! I apologise for exposing you tothis repulsive spectacle...

(Sarcasm...)

smile.jpg

I might grace this thread with more pictures unless begged to stop. Be warned! :D

The first picture is a mirror image. :-)

Hamanishiki, Kotomitsuki & Takamisakari, the ravens of Nichidai. (Thumbs up...)

Yay, pictures! More, please! :-9

Yes, I've noticed it too. Did you do it the hard way (kanji on akeni) or the easy way (GANYU pattern on K'waka's kimono)? :)

Why does K'waka wear Gan'yu-related clothes, anyway?

The yama kanji looked odd (rightmost upside down) to me so I flipped the photo horizontally to check it and only then did I notice the Ganyu text on Mitsuya's kimono.

Rikishi tend to wear kimono adorned with other guys' shikona, presumably those of his friends. It's considered rude to wear your own shikona or so I've read somewhere.

As promised, more pictures, from Sumo magazine, and NHK sumo magazine, all scans recieved from Hahanoyama-zeki.

First, a Konishiki series, for all his fans out there. On the first picture you see young Konishiki with current Azumazeki-oyakata in his active rikishi days (notice the mage). Following three are self-explanatory.

Konishiki1.jpg

Konishiki2.jpg

Konishiki3.jpg

Konishiki4.jpg

Next is Akebono's last dohyo-iri (ring enetering ceremony), from his danpatsu-shiki (hair-cutting ceremony when rikishi retires). That's Ake's son in gyoji's lap.

Ake-intai.jpg

And finally, more BW amateurs pictures. Since I'm not sure who everybody on the second picture is, I've left the text for those interested. On the top picture are current Tochinonada, Kaiho and Kotomitsuki. Strange, I never thought of them as more or less same generation...

More to come! :D

Truly some priceless images here. Especially the one on asashoryu and the ones feat. takamisakari.

This is one of the many reasons why I love reading this forum  :-)  (Heart)

More pictures!

First, gyoji consecrating the dohyo before the basho starts

(dohyo matsuri)

Dohyomatsuri.jpg

Kitanofuji-oyakata's kanreki (sixtieth birthday) dohyo-iri.

Supposedly all yokozuna are entitled to hold it. His

tachi-mochi (sword-bearer) is Kokonoe-oyakata, former

yokozuna Chiyonofuji. His tsuyu-harai (dew sweeper) is

Hakkaku-oyakata, former yokozuna Hokutoumi. Both are his

former deshi, I think.

Kitanofuji.jpg

See zabuton fly in Maru's honor! Hoshifransu, where are you?

I think this is from the basho were Maru won his tsuna

(yokozuna rope).

zabuton.jpg

Chanko (lunch) in Tomozuna-beya.

tomozunachanko.jpg

How often does this happen? 4 former university wrestlers,

they all got the same kesho-mawashi from their university.

University.jpg

Daishi, changing the diapers? Closer look revelas he's

putting a miniature kesho-mawashi on the baby, presumably

his son. That's argentinian Hoshitango, I think, looking

from the background. A jungyo picture.

pelene.jpg

And finaly, Kaiho! Well, Kaiho-maru to be precise, Kaiho's

father's fishing boat after which Kaiho took his shikona,

'Sea Phoenix'.

More to follow in the new year!

Just a word : great!

Picture of Musashimaru's promotion is fantastic!

And, of course, the three yokozuna of Kokonoe-beya during ex-Kitanofuji's kanreki dohyo-iri.

The new year is here, and I promised new pictures, didn't I?

Here you go:

That's Red dragon next to the Blue/Green one. Asasekiryu and his dobeya (stable-mate) telling jokes in Mongolian.

seki&sho.jpg

Wakanoyama, having a bad hair day (all over his body?)

badhair.jpg

Tochinonada. Seeing these guys with glasses always surprizes me.

cvike.jpg

Takanohana's "demon face" after he beat Musashimaru in 2001 Natsu to win his (last?) cup.

oni.jpg

Akinoshima, *smiling*! Yes, that sight has scarred me for life... ;)

Akinoshima.jpg

To ease the pain of previous picture, here's a guy who really knows how to smile:

Musa2.jpg

One more Musa, but do you see that tall dark deshi on the right? I think that's Tongan Minaminoshima, Musa's tsukebito.

Musa.jpg

Chiyotaikai, with a "who, me?" face.

ko_ja.jpg

Ah, it's not easy to be a new boy in the club... 3 ozeki badmouthing the 4th? Tochiazuma's expression is priceless...

ko_ja2.jpg

That's it for today!

Smiling guys you want? (Devilish thought)

Here's another one for you!

Akinoshima-smile.jpg

Yes, mademoiselle, Katsumi knows how to smile! :-)

So does Kotoryu, good old Katsumi! (Aww...)

Kotoryu-smile.jpg

Yes, they're namesakes. (Thumbs up...)

mong1992.jpg

The third one is Kyokutenzan, who is still in Makushita, but is thought to be the most strong-willed of the three. They came in together, and there is a famous story-at one point Shuuzan and Tenhou decided they had had enough and decided to leave Sumo. I think they even returned to Mongolia... Kyokutenzan persuaded them to return. He is currently ranked at Makushita East 55 after a couple of poor Bashos. Highest rank-Makushita 16. He looks extremely young today for his age- 29.

Musoyama's kesho mawashi is splendid!

I couldn't agree more! The best I have seen so far. It fits his dark mood perfectly!

I wish Toki had such a kesho-mawashi... :~-(

OK, more pictures!

Just to prove that some men look better when they get older, here's Kotozakura, current Sadogatake-oyakata.

Kotozakura.jpg

Speaking of former yokozuna, here's Hanada Masaru(?), former Wakanohana, trying for a career in american football (didn't last, did it?).

Hanada_football.jpg

And more yokozuna, playing golf:

golf1.jpg

But not only yokozuna play golf... Tochinonada, Oginishiki and Higonoumi, if I'm not mistaken.

golf2.jpg

Another dohyo-matsuri image.

Dohyo-matsuri.jpg

Chiyotaikai, practicing violin. :D

Chiyotaikai1.jpg

Lower ranked rikishi waiting their turn. Sign says 'Toilets'... This is taken from a site of some professional photographer, so I'm probably breaking all sorts of copyrights, but it's such a good picture.

Mitoizumi doing what he does the best:

See you again next week!
