Emergency vehicles donated to Mongolia

Another example of the sumo world doing good for a community, in this case a Mongolian community. An ambulance and a fire engine have been donated to a town in Mongolia by the city of Atsugi, Kanagawa Prefecture. The vehicles were due to be scrapped at the end of last year, but instead they have been refurbished and donated to the Mongolian town where there is a critical shortage of emergency vehicles.

Ozeki Harumafuji took part in the ceremonial handover of the vehicles - his father was involved in a car accident just over five years ago (thread), there was no ambulance in the area at that time and sadly he passed away. "We always thought at the time that if there had been an ambulance, he might have been saved," said Harumafuji. "Seeing this ambulance and all the equipment inside, I really think it will make a difference in Mongolia and save many lives."

Which side of the road do they drive on in Mongolia? If on right like most of the world, I hope the refurbishment included swapping the driving seat...

They drive on the right side of the road. But, I've read that up to 90% of vehicles are imported second-hand from a variety of countries, including places like Japan where they drive on the left. The mix of vehicles with both left and right-hand drive makes for a somewhat chaotic road experience.

They drive on the right side of the road. But, I've read that up to 90% of vehicles are imported second-hand from a variety of countries, including places like Japan where they drive on the left. The mix of vehicles with both left and right-hand drive makes for a somewhat chaotic road experience.

When I visited for two weeks at a time, working with Habitat for Humanity in 2003, 2004 and 2005, a scarey lot of them were very new drivers and they drove all over the place -- some nasty accidents.

When his father died in 2006 in a traffic accident, no well equipped ambulance came. He thus became active in charity work, also because of the teachings of his father and was also intermediate at the donation of an ambulance and a fire-engine in April.
