Gusoyama 103 Posted March 13, 2014 Over in the current basho talk thread, Ronnie posted a good question: I'm not sure how to search for this, but is Kisenosato the first Ozeki to lose to a sekitori with no chonmage? Its got to be someone who came in as MsTD, even someone like Kotooshu who came up VERY quickly still had a chonmage by the time he beat Chiyotaikai 2 years in. I've looked at Dejima(1997.09.01, 10th basho), Miyabiyama (2000.01.02, 10th basho), and Kotomitsuki(2000.11.13, 11th basho) and all had chonmage for those wins. Endo's on his 7th basho. Anyone know this off the top of their head? I'll keep looking.

Asashosakari 19,274 Posted March 13, 2014 We were talking about that last basho, too: Miyabiyama!! Jesus...I probably watched it. How about before that??? Pretty rare I reckon.Same with 6 basho later Asashio (now Takasago, former ozeki) even won that first ozeki bout against Takanohana I, but he already had a top-knot. Winning in the 7th basho were Musoyama (top-knot?) against Konishiki and Yutakayama (also later ozeki) against Kotogahama in 1962. http://www.sanspo.com/sports/news/20140123/sum14012305210001-n1.html Nikkan says that Endo winning today would have been the first no-top knot victory against an ozeki in the six-basho era, so I guess Musoyama already had one.
Swami 245 Posted March 15, 2014 Wajima rose very quickly also, before he got a chon-mage, so he might be one to consider. Swami
Doitsuyama 1,185 Posted March 15, 2014 Wajima rose very quickly also, before he got a chon-mage, so he might be one to consider. Swami Hmm, he faced an Ozeki for the first time on day 1 of his tenth basho and won. Well, 18 months probably are enough to get a chon-mage, or?
