This is a follow up to the previous Kaio poll. Most people seem to think his intai is soon.... But how soon?

I'm going to have faith and say he'll hold out for one more year. 1st half of 2007.

If uninjured, he remains good enough to consistantly put up double-digit wins. Of course the "if" is a big if.

KaioU's career has been very long and successful. He wasn't very injury prone before one keiko session before Natsu 2001 when he injured his back in keiko with Asashoryu. He was in superb shape back then but that injury ruined the yokozuna basho. He did win Nagoya basho after coming back but Aki basho was again an injured basho. He never had a chance to compete totally healthy since those times. The back injury is chronic and while it is better at times, it comes back quite often to make his training difficult. Also other injuries have been piling up since. Both biceps' tendon long head have been torn, calf muscle tears, tailbone balagan etc. Still he has done very well to get back in shape when he has had better times but 2005 was very difficult. Not a single basho healthy. The news that his back is giving problems again and keiko for Hatsu basho has been hampered, make me as a big fan wish he would decide to retire and not linger if he doesn't seem to get back in healthy condition at all anymore. Whole 2005 was difficult so it is getting unlikely he will be able to have any healthy basho in 2006 either. He is so incredibly good that he can still go double digit every time but it is painfully far from what he could do if he would be as healthy as Wakanosato (well not now..), Asashoryu, Kotooshu, even Kotomitsuki, Kisenosato etc. All rikishi have injuries but the difference between a handicapping one and the "usual" one is huge. Veteran ozeki simply are too badly injured to do sumo.. Whether that is pathetic as many seems to think is another issue. Of course it is also so that people who don't understand about the nature of injuries tend to ignore them saying "Part of the reality of sumo to have injuries and everyone has those!" or "Excuses!". Anyways, KaioU could retire and take the load off.

On the Tomozuna Beya site i read on the blog that Kaio will retire at the age of 35 (except if he loses his Ozeki rank or a big injury)

So i think he will retire after the Kyushu 2007

Yeah, he stated that already in 2002 if I recall correctly. He was sleeping in an old X-ray room back then during some off-Tokyo basho. Did over 120 keiko bouts in 5 days against Chiyotaikai too then.

He's from Fukuoka, and that's probably where he wants to end his career. So I voted for "Nov/Dec 2006". (In jonokuchi...)

Before or just after Aki 2006.

Sad but true!

Edit-Not Aki 2005 like my original post said.
