6 pointsHaving very little-to-zero knowledge of Japanese, let alone reading kanji, I often use the services of Google translate when reading sumo articles in Japanese characters. Some languages they translate beautifully. Some, like Japanese, is a bit of a hit and miss and I just found out quite hilariously that too extended to the rikishi names. I think to those fluent in Japanese unfortunately won't find these as funny as to those like me who is pretty much Japanese-blind, but anyway here are some of the funny makuuchi ones I picked up quoted straight from Google-translated kyokai rikishi profile page : Kotoshogiku Kazuhiro : KotoSusumuKiku Kazuhiro (you'll be chrysanthemum Kazuhiro) Okinoumi Ayumi : Oki sea Ayumu (Ayumi Umi favorite) Kisenosato Yutaka : Sato Hiroshi Marezei (Yutaka Sato of the dress) Goeido Gotaro : Australian Sakae road TsuyoshiTaro (will taro Goue move Tsuyoshi) Kotoyuki Kazuyoshi : KotoIsamu bright Ichiiwa (Kazuyoshi this and Yuki) Ikioi Shota : Energize Shota (momentum Shota) Nishikigi Tetsuya : Euonymus Tetsuya Shodai Naoya : Shodai Still Ya Hakuho Sho : Hakuho quotient Gagamaru Masaru : Gagamaru over Yoshikaze Masatsugu : Yoshimifu MiyabiTsugi Takayasu Akira : high coercive Akira Takarafuji Daisuke : Daisuke Fuji because it was Kakuryu Rikisaburo : TsuruRyu ChikaraSaburo (nuclear flow RiKisaburo) Terunofuju Haruo : Illumination field Haruo Fuji (Haruo Fuji of Teru) Aminishiki Ryuji : Vacation Nishiki Ryuji Daieisho Hayato : die casting Hayato Amuuru Mitsuhiro : OmoneyumeRo light Large Takekaze Akira : Australian-style Asahi Tochinosin Tsuyoshi : Tsuyoshi Shin of land Aoiyama Kosuke : Green mountains Wataru right Sokokurai Eikichi : Aoikuni come Eikichi (Eikichi much warehouse) Hidonoumi Takuya : Ying Nai Takuya (Takuya Umi of Hide) Seiro Takeshi : Blue wolf Takeshi Chiyotairyu Hidemasa : Masaru Chiyo dragon Hidemasa (Chiyo residence Hidemasa) My faves are the Australian rikishis, the strangely persuasive Takayasu, radioactive Kakuryu, Hot Wheels-loving Daieisho, and Sokokurai who is clearly hiding a lot of baggage behind his serene exterior....

5 pointsI expect this to be a lively topic. 2 pointsIf it is at the end of word, always 'n' In between, it depends on the preceding syllables, e.g. Shim-pan Shim-pai but Shin-Juku Shin-Kan-Sen I have seen both Shin-bun & Shim-bun too lazy to look up the exact linguistic rule, the sun is shining and spring seem to have finally arrived here in Southern Germany.

2 pointsI was watching a sumo documentary a few years ago and took a screenshot just to save and share for a moment like this. Although I can't remember the name of the docu or what it was about, it was on youtube in Japanese, translated with Spanish narration, in English captions with the result: I like Orora's in which Google translates to 'Large Dew luo' 2nd edit: Thanks to egparis18! This link is to her post of the above documentary Here is the now updated translation as of today. Translators still seem to have a long way to go.

2 pointsGoogle Translate's Japanese->English translations are pretty bad indeed, and usually on the wrong side of the dividing line between "funny mistranslation" and "incomprehensible gibberish". Yahoo Honyaku is significantly better, although it "cheats" a bit by simply not translating unknown kanji compounds at all (which includes many shikona). My current favourite literal translation over there is the very cheerful: Asabenkei Daikichi -> Morning formidable man great good luck

2 pointsReferring to Akinomaki's "About 7000 watched (they don't open the whole kokugikan for spectators)" above -- they opened the downstairs and the upstairs (though the escalators weren't working when I looked) -- and both were pretty full. In previous years the upstairs was not opened, but this time I particularly noticed that right from opening time at 7:00, people were being allowed upstairs. Orion, legs still not recovered from nearly 4 hours in a triangular box seat

2 pointsThe wake for the late Fusanobori took place at the Kokugikan earlier today and was attended by around 200 people. Rijicho Hakkaku-oyakata (former Yokozuna Hokutoumi), from the same Takasago ichimon, gave a farewell speech, as did Hideo Yamashita, head of Takasago-beya's Tokyo koenkai. Following the wake, Fusanobori's wife and daughters carried his portrait around the dohyo in the Kokugikan, a final farewell to his 45 years in the sumo world. Hakkaku gives his speech. Former Sekiwake Takamiyama is at the far end of the front row, next to Asasekiryu and Takasago-oyakata (former Ozeki Asashio). Fusanobori's portrait. A nice touch, this akeni-themed kodengaeshi was given to those attending.

1 pointAbout 7000 watched (they don't open the whole kokugikan for spectators) http://www.sankei.com/sports/news/160429/spo1604290020-n1.html 4K video of juryo and makuuchi, yokozuna-ozeki might follow NHK BS news Ura at the beginning still against makushita all are waiting for this: IshiUra vs. Ura butsukari-geiko lesson from Aminishiki always injured Harumafuji and Terunofuji took part in keiko - Hakuho and Goeido didn't problems with the left knee Harumafuji only against lower ranked opponents, e.g. komusubi Okinoumi - 13-0 the others like it is planned: to show the YDC how yokozuna and ozeki do against each other Kisenosato prepares for the miracle promotion - 9-4, Kakuryu 7-6, Kotoshogiku 6-8 1.2 million yen for Kumamoto were collected by the rikishi

1 pointTokuda Ryutaro is certainly the strongest of the 12 new recruits, but Sugano Keisuke deserves a mention also (and perhaps keeping an eye out for). Once upon a time A few years ago in Tokyo, there were 3 young rikishi from the same year who were so good that they stood head and shoulders (literally) above the competition. Not only were they great rivals of each other, but also very good friends as well, and all 3 had strong showings in national level tournaments. Their names were Sugano Keisuke (菅野 圭祐), Arai Yuri (新井 宥里), and Nihon-yanagi Wataru (二本柳 亘), as pictured below (from left to right). The other 2 currently attend Saitama Sakae High School, and may choose to join Ozumo at a later date.

1 pointThe final work on the next kesho mawashi for Ura, from Towa high school in Kyoto, also the first from that school: school flag and color as the design, 15kg. Art decorator Hasegawa put the parts together that were produced separately, he worked for the kesho mawashi for many rikishi, Hakuho among them. Ura will get it tomorrow. http://www.kyoto-np.co.jp/sports/article/20160428000114/1 I also changed the pics in the first post: This was the main sumo news item of the day. When he went to the ichiban shusse with Gagamaru's kesho mawashi he thought "This might be the first and last time". http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1638871.html Asked what full moon he's aiming for: "Well, the top is yokozuna, but ..." "When I started I thought, no matter what, to juryo, but since I never expected to get there so fast, well ..." http://mainichi.jp/articles/20160429/k00/00m/050/023000c
