Hokutoumi and Chiyonofuji each won 5 yusho at the start of the Heisei Era. Not sure if possible rose-tinted glasses of a newbie sumo fan played a part, but both were more exciting to me than Asahifuji (and more recently Kakuryu and Kisenosato). And Musashimaru's 12 yusho were spread over his (injury-induced?) morph from an oshi to a yotsu specialist which places him as #4 above Akebono on my list.

This documentary was broadcast at the end of September 2018 (i.e. post Aki Basho). It's up on youtube but it's been posted with a time-lag of about 1 minute 45 seconds between the visuals and the sound. Maybe this is necessary to avoid having it taken down immediately ? (..or maybe it will disappear anyway soon ?) Visuals appear first and then the correct sound for the first second of the programme begins at about 1:45. Perfectly watchable by opening two separate screens from the same link (separately): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vpscdnrhrsw Then use the first screen for your audio, and when the video gets to about 1:45 start the second video with the sound set to mute. Adjust the lip/word synch later if you're a perfecionist. Enjoy. It's a worthwhile 45 minutes. (...and you might want to "like" the poster's youtube coz it's all a bit negative there...OK it's not a perfect post, but at least he/she went to the effort of posting it up for us all).

Natsu 2014 discussion thread **probable spoilers**
Hageouryu replied to kuroimori's topic in Honbasho Talk
”In araibira’s vid’s commentary of the Hakuhō monoii call, one guy said that Takanonami (or Takanoumi?) had called a monoii in the past too. Does anyone know anything about that? Are there vids of it? NHK refers to the Takatoriki v. Tosanoumi bout from hatsu basho day 9, 18 years ago as the one that Takanonami called. Anybody got a link to a video ? -

Sumo trivia - Oguruma oyakata recovered from neck injury
Hageouryu replied to Ahokaina's topic in Ozumo Discussions
NHK programme from Sat 5 Oct about Oguruma-oyakata is here: http://video.fc2.com/content/20131005MXcmwVRs 42 minutes long - if you stop it and try to reload you may be expected to sign up to the website ("free limit exceeded" message). However, single first-time viewing was possible on next day. If this should be in the "TV programme" thread rather than here, maybe somebody who knows how to do it can create a link. -
Reply to Treblemaker - as a Kotomitsuki fan you may want to watch this It's "part 1". (...part 1 of how many? well, that might spoil your enjoyment...) However, part 2 and subsequent parts will appear as you need them. Enjoy.

NHK radio broadcasts live commentary from 3pm to 6pm in Japanese which should be available online from here: http://www3.nhk.or.jp/netradio/ Whether this is an experience enhancer to the live feed, or a source of annoyance probably depends on personal preference. I first used the concept in prehistoric times with a simple radio and a black and white TV with knackered sound that I'd picked up off a rubbish tip. Couldn't understand a word beyond names and about 3 kimarite at the time, but it was definitely a big plus in terms of atmosphere appreciation until said rubbish tip kindly provided me with a fully-functional replacement TV. (...nostalgic pause) And if the English language NHK live commentary is easy to access by internet (...I believe that it's on FM somewhere...) then that might be worth adding simultaneously.

Thanks to DowntownHyena for the Juryo selection - if this becomes a regular habit of yours, it will be an interesting addition to this thread...not trying to put any pressure on you (if it's there I'll enjoy it, if not, well that's OK too), but noticed that it was only your 2nd post on the forum. ...very welcome indeed. Thanks as always to Kintamayama. And regarding Harumafuji's first dohyo-iri, I seem to recall Hakuho's first was timed at about 1:25 or so, with Kitanofuji immediately suggesting that it would become less rushed with experience, and now it's typically, well, how long?.

Regardless of what actually happened, it's encouraging to read on Kotooshu's own blog that he was already in damage-limitation mode by 27 September - which appears to predate some of the cut-and-paste articles. Thank you to Bulgarian-based forum members above for your contributions and opinions. It's always interesting to read how events are reported "locally".

NHK documentary at end of 1988 focusing on Chiyonofuji's 53 bout winning streak. stop this one after 3:40 (picture freeze) and go to

And one more vote of thanks for the videos Kintamamyama. This basho. Previous bashos. The seemingly daily news updates throughout the years. Trivia. Humour. Making the effort again and again and again to make visiting this website so enjoyable and informative. The earlier comment by Igordemorais that you have more fans in Brazil than you can imagine is probably mirrored all around the English-accessing sumo world. Big big respect.

Re Sentoryu article, it's always fascinating to read news about a former favoutite rikishi, especially those that rarely get shown on old TV replays and drift gradually from consciousness. Will probably never become a fan of MMA or similar, but nevertheless enjoyed the article. Thanks for posting. Super photo set too. -

NHK brief news reports focusing on Kotoshogiku and Kisenosato. Open links and then click on "play". Videos typically remain available for about 5 days, will probably be replaced daily by further 2 or 3 minute videos throughout the basho.
