    Learn English for sumo

It's だぜ. ぜ is a sentence ending thing more common in kansai and it has a feeling of encouragement to immediate action, like 行くぜ! I'm a bit more concerned about the "What dose Hakkiyoi mean?" since that mistake seems to originate from the press release...

    Juryo Promotions for Aki 2016

I think it's just a quick n dirty translation that's causing the confusion. The way it's said in the article is more 'it's been 5 basho since (the last participation) as a sekitori' Which is probably the counting method that'd be used in an English newspaper anyway, check your handy style manual I'm sure all of you have on you....

    The Wall 2016 Edition

I checked out the guys who managed a 4 win kachikochi at Ms1 (east or west) and still didn't get a Juryo promotion. I found something a little strange. Up until 1978 this happened quite often, then suddenly it stopped and dropped to about 3 per decade. This doesn't coincide with a division expansion, so maybe just a change of thinking up top? (It actually seems up until then there is a spectacular amount of 8-7 scores in Juryo) There is even one amazing example of a poor guy getting KK 3 times in a row at Ms1 and still not moving up to Juryo, Homanzan in 1966 http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Rikishi.aspx?r=4245

Oyanagi ate his first loss against Wakanoshima, dampening hopes that he'd rocket straight up to makuuchi. Sakamoto is again at 2-2, I think he really needs to show a 5-2 at this level to really demonstrate Juryo staying power. Even Onosho's slow crawl up makushita was primarily made up of 5-2s. 3 sandanme rikishi are already through on their KKs, and I guess the yusho will be between ishibashi and tamaki. Ishibashi is getting sent up to makushita tomorrow to deal with a low ranked 4-0 wrestler there. Very few guys are having a disastrous basho though and its quite scary because after this basho we add a ton of guys so the list may get very long indeed...
  15. Kaisei did get KK at sanyaku last time so let's not forget that. Tomorrow is Ura - Daiki. Bout history between them: http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Query_bout.aspx?show_form=0&shikona1=Ura&shikona2=Daiki

Nishikido situation; split from kyujo thread

The previous comments were speculating the rikishi had been fired and wondering why, but then that guy posts. "I know everything. The rikishi should not be fired, but it is the oyakata who should step down. Oyakatas who don't provide chanko-nabe aren't oyakatas. This oyakata is a robber." Read into that what you will, whether he actually knows something or not etc. Maybe we shouldn't have rampant speculation about ijime? Also despite his user name and my avatar, it's not related to me.

He is joined by Daiki in sekitorihood. It has been pretty fun to follow both of them up the banzuke, hopefully they both make it to makuuchi even if it isn't on a KK streak. The makushita-joi-basement (totally made up term) contains three of our rikishi. Sakamoto, Oyanagi, and Iwasaki. Realistically only Oyanagi has a shot of getting 7-0 and the automatic promotion. Oyanagi seems to have an easier first day bout anyway. In a complete reversal from the last few basho, makushita-joi is uninteresting for watchers of youngster trying to break into sekitorihood. Ms1-Ms3 is the domain of veterans, completely, and a large amount of sekitori experience between them. Above Sakamoto only one rikishi is at their career high, Meisei Ms5. (MeiSei5?)

Nagoya 2016 Videos- Promo and Days 1-15

I probably wouldn't have gotten into sumo without Moti's videos, as many others have said before. Not only me, but it revived interest in sumo at my office. It was pretty tricky to tell Japanese guys that I work with the name of the channel, but it soon spread. Since they often work many days in row until 10pm, they will sure miss having VODs to binge watch during some downtime or when the bucho goes out early. Anyway I, like others will continue to find ways to watch. But I'll miss the days of people running up to me after meetings with 'Neckless' written in a notebook and a bunch of questions about English. Enjoy watching the basho with us, without expending a bunch of effort and time. I hope Mark Buckton sends you some sweets.

I made this for Makuuchi http://www.sumoforum.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=34137#entry282831 I have a matlab script that pulls things out of saved HTML files from the db if you can run matlab, but it basically builds another database within matlab and not a csv file.

Lately the NCAA has been super inconsistent in applying the rules, kicking people out who did charity... Etc. It's not so much the pro wage but taking money from advertisers and koenkai that would be the problem. The Russian guy ex-wakanoho, never got a scholarship from NCAA school, just walk on (means no scholarship) . He did get one from NAIA school, but they operate under different rules, and generally the schools are not as strong academically. Anyway I think this is going a bit off topic.

Yes, I mean tsukedashi! My bad. Yokozuna is definitely pronounced with a zu. In some regions it might be a tzu in some regions in Japan, but maybe rare. I do not think it is ever pronounced dzu in the way english speaking people would pronounce it. Like in the other thread -oo- and -ou- is basically the same every where except in some regions. The guy who made that thread, I hope he never goes to kansai otherwise he will have a heart attack. Despite being so small Japan has a few very distinct dialects. It was more of a mess before the 1900s and pronounce was standardized by the government.
