The Wall came up big this basho in a way that hasn't been seen in a long time. Only 5 of our existing rikishi managed to pass and each one only by a single win. 2/3rds of the sekitori rikishi hit the wall and Yutakayama crashed big time earning an early trip to Juryo in the process. Asanoyama just passed, but that was the story for most Juryo rikishi this basho. Kizaki and Takemasa both passed the wall by the skin of their teeth. Neither of them are going to go up enough to seriously factor into any promotion race bar a surprise yusho. Tsushimanada doubled his career loss count this basho as his 'Ura-lite' approach to sumo finally caught up to him in mid-Makushita. This basho's experience I think mirrors what a lot of people imagined could've happened to Ura himself when he reached upper Makushita. Midorifuji is another Wall member coming up with a 4-3 and his size disadvantage is already becoming in apparent in his bouts at the bottom of Makushita. He's very clearly giving it his all in the matches and it could have been easily 2-5 or 5-2 record. A loss: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhF2P3RLaFs Within the new members we have the two sandanme entrants of last basho Murata and Wakatakakage. Both are from current powerhouse Toyo University and they met to decide the Sandanme yusho in ketteisen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfxNYIY4CHs Wakatakakage won with authority in that match. He has two brothers who have had some success in upper Makushita but haven't really been poised to breakthrough to Juryo. Father and grandfather experience in sumo rounds out the pedigree. Perhaps he can pull his brothers up along with him? Ichiyamamoto is the top of the new members who passed through Jonokuchi and gave up a desk job in some government office to join through the new age limit. Right now he looks fine but has some work to do to be able to pass through Makushita. His only loss so far: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tp2sagLjltI Ryuko has had some success in primary school amasumo, but like Ichiyamamoto seems to need to work on core strength a bit. However he has the advantage of being 5 years younger. Here is the Ryuko-Ichiyamamoto matchup from Haru - it is quite long: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOXqJlLWny4

I spent a whole day this time drafting new numbers tables based on historical basho and I ended up 7th! After being mired in the second half of the results for a whole year this is a good feeling. We got the same result, and I also had Sato in M11e, I wonder how close our entries were.

Mitakeumi now has the flu that's been going around and the outlook is dim for another KK. Omoto has his first 4-0 start since he was at the bottom of Sandanme Ura lost to Tochimaru where he tried to pull and with his low stance it was quickly taken advantage of, and sees the slim chance of Juryo promotion evaporate for now. Daiki has started 4-0 but hasn't faced anyone above Ms15, and that Ms15 was first timer Sakamoto. He will face Tochihiryu tomorrow when all the 4-0 Makushita square off. Inoue is still doing well. His style is kind of crazy but not like Ura. He comes out like a brawler and grapples his opponents neck while threatening leg throws. For instance: in 22 wins, he has yet to do so by yorikiri. Yet he flies under the radar. Toshinofuji has only one win by fusen and looks to be at the end. Chiyonoumi seems to be over whatever was bothering him last basho and is back in form.

With double digit kachikoshi though he stayed on longer than most, however couldn't follow Onosho into Juryo who had a similar chain of results. Kotokamatani also hit the wall in spectacular fashion starting 1-4, so most of his wins were against others who were struggling. He'll get to try again next basho from Makushita. Sakamoto (now Daiamami) once again barely just reached a 4-3 kachikoshi and with that finally enters sekitori-hood after a somewhat more dramatic than he'd like climb from a Ms15TD start. With comfortable kachikoshi from Hokutofuji and Oyanagi we'll have 3 sekitori for next basho. With the other top guys hitting the wall, all 3 will be in the top 3 positions. Consequently this leaves upper makushita fairly empty for the first time in a while. Ishibashi who scored 5-2 from Ms14e will be nearby. Kizaki, after his 7-0 yusho in Sandanme last time, found it somewhat difficult in Makushita but managed to avoid the wall - for now. As mentioned before, Ikegawa leaves the wall after going kyujo with a 0.952 win percentage, and he'll be in the hunt for Sandanme yusho again in January. Hakkaku stablemate Satoyama makekochi'd as well, finding Sandanme a bit too tough. Way down in Jonidan Sugano also leaves us as soon as he joined, and betwen Kotokamatani, Satoyama, and Sugano we no longer have a high school aged rikishi on the wall. Asahiryu in his 3rd basho finally put together a spotless record but came up short in the playoff against returning-from-injury ex-Komusubi Jokoryu. However, Asahiryu represented himself well, and has a lot of room to put on some weight, so let's see what he can do in Makushita. Our only new join for the new year is Umeno, a collegiate rikishi in Sakaigawa-beya.

Yes, you're right. From 1968 they changed Juryo from 18 ranks to 13 until 2003. So for completeness sake I've given that. http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Query.aspx?show_form=0&rowcount=2&form1_rank=J11e&form1_wins=6&form1_losses=9&form1_year=1968-2002 -
It really depends on the condition of the skin, if its calloused heavily then sports tape is much softer.

Yeah, the query is specifically for J12e. And I'm assuming a win because if he loses then its doubly no question he gets demoted. -

This takes literally 30 seconds for anyone to test out, try taping your fingers together and open palm striking anything with just the fingers. You're going to hurt yourself more than anything you are hitting. The power is all in the palm.

Since the war, there have been 6 Basho with no kyuujyou in sekitori ranks. Haru 2006, Nagoya '93, Hatsu '90, Haru 1982, Kyushu 1979, and Haru 1967. Let me know if I missed. Four more days to go.

This has a pretty concise rundown. http://ozumou.com/archives/31 I can translate it after I come home but it's pretty much what people say here already (carrying someone out of the ring, like a massive tochinoshin style yorikiri)

Seems like if he got Sato to touch down he could win!

At the top there was a good chance that we would have 3 sekitori rikishi for the kyushu basho after Daiki confirmed his kachikoshi. Ura and Oyanagi needed a kachikoshi, and Sakamoto needed a 5-2 basho. However with Ura buddy taping his thumb on the left hand that became difficult, and Sakamoto dropped his last two to fall to 4-3. Probably the most unlikely situation of Oyanagi turning around a 0-3 start to go 4-3 and into Juryo actually happened. Iwasaki managed his first 5+ win basho in nearly a year to become a dai-wall-avoider. Both he and Sakamoto will be up in the makushita-joi to take a realistic jab at Juryo. Ishibashi, Oyanagi's Sd100 TD start partner, was able to collect another consecutive 6-1 basho which will put him in the top quarter of Makushita. On his way he beat recent wall-graduate ex-Takagi (Takaryu, by the way what happened? He scored a 7-0Y to go into Juryo and has been sliding back down ever since) Ishibashi's heya-mate Tamaki had a slightly more exciting journey to 6-1, losing the yusho to Yamaguchi in a straight up bout. Rounding out a perfect basho for our Makushita rikishi, Kotokamatani continues to impress by taking a 5-2 Makushita kachikoshi at 18. The Sandanme teenagers were much more unfortunate, all of them hitting the wall. Ikegawa lost the first match of his career, to the somewhat incredibly named Dai-kamikaze Chikara. He however finished 6-1 and will be in Makushita next basho. Kizaki took his second yusho in a row by toppling Mongolian Kiribayama, and has a good chance to face him again next basho. The somewhat expected playoff bout failed to materialize when Chiyonoumi either slipped or went for an ill advised leg grab in his match and lost. Chiyonoumi, by the way, spoiled the perfect records of both Hatooka and Takemasa. We add 5 more members after losing 8. The Mongolian Asahiryu who lost the Jonidan yusho to Shuji, Kurahashi who had a strange turn around from 4-3 to 7-0 in Jonidan, Tsunetsugu, Fujisato with a similar turn around, and Sugano.

Sometimes stories blowing up worldwide hurts the victim way more than the offenders. Sumo is already a strange thing for people not familiar ("Those pictures make me want to vomit" - our US based administrator on seeing pics of a sumo fight) and he gave up based on 'bullying' which sounds like elementary school on the surface. I can understand why Brodi might not want to make a huge deal about it, and just move on. He already got something he loved doing turned into a mess, no reason to give a bunch of people he doesn't know bad first impressions.
