Where Are All Of The Hawaiian Rikishi?
Chanko Thief replied to Chanko Thief's topic in Ozumo Discussions
Exactly. I hope that when the world goes back to normal, he gets on this right away. Now that his nephew is no longer in sumo, he has an open slot for a foreigner in his stable, and I would hope that he fills it with a fellow Hawaiian. -
Do English language copies of these books exist, or is there a way to get them printed/translated in English?
-
I believe Hakuho and Kisenosato have autobiographies published if I’m not mistaken.
-
Do you like older music or just modern sound?

I like Asanoyama’s brand of sumo and wish him the best of luck. He is strong as a bull and from what I have seen, he seems to be a kind person as well. I hope he has a very long and successful career in sumo.

Musashimaru is an oyakata now, wouldn’t he make a trip to Hawaii every now and then to look for prospects? And surely Konishiki would send someone his way if he saw potential in a young wrestler while visiting the islands, no? -

Very cool, thank you! The article mentions the 2019 World Sumo Championship was held in Hawaii. Unfortunately I don’t follow amateur sumo, do you know how the event went (turnout, winners, etc.)? And would scouts be sent from the professional sumo world to look for potential athletes to join pro sumo at this event? Sorry, my knowledge of these amateur tournaments is mediocre at best. -

That’s most unfortunate, I had high hopes for him. -
Thank you Katsunorifuji, much appreciated!

Thank you so much!

I am a huge boxing fan. In addition to this, I am a fan of World’s Strongest Man and NFL (Go Seahawks!).

Any updates on how Akebono is doing now? Wishing him all the best for a good recovery.

Anybody else from Washington State on this forum?

I am a big fan of Oonokuni’s sumo but I seem to have a hard time finding information about him. What footage I have seen seems to be almost entirely of his bouts with Chiyonofuji with the exception of a few others. Does anybody have any stories of him or more original information than what would be found in your basic wiki search etc.? Also, I hear from many that he was a “failed” Yokozuna, but what was the reason behind this? Excess weight? Injuries? If Oonokuni were in his prime today, how well does he do against the current crop of Makuuchi?
-
Thank you Sasanishiki for your excellent insight, much obliged.
-
Is there a place to purchase replicas (assuming they exist)?
-
Thank you all for your input. It is refreshing to know that I am not the only one who thinks of Oonokuni as a failure. He is one of my all time favorites and I think he gets a bad rap sometimes that is undeserved. He achieved more in his life than most people could ever dream of and should hold his head high and be proud.

Brilliant!! Thank you so much!! You have made my day.
-
How do you all see a prime Oonokuni doing against the current Makuuchi wrestlers? Does he still make Yokozuna? If so, do you expect more success from him in this modern era?
-
What would you all say were his greatest assets/weaknesses when he was actively wrestling?
-
I completely agree as well. Very admirable in my eyes.
-
Thank you so much!! The search is over at last!! If you ever come across his autobiography, please let me know. Thank you again.
-
If you could kindly provide a link I would be very grateful. I have tried every search I can think of.

According to his wiki he has written a cake cookbook and his autobiography. I have been looking to purchase both (preferably in English, but Japanese would be just fine) for several years now but haven’t been able to locate copies. Does anybody know how/where I can acquire these books?

Just heard of his passing 5 minutes ago, not sure how I missed this. Very sad to hear, he will be missed. Rip Byamba.
