Only 4 players for Kyushu 2022 make for odd results - and I don't necessarily mean the Yusho for myself - but the awards. With so few players the Banzuke committee decided not to try and publish a new Banzuke. Let's hope for many more players this year! And in Aki result news - Yokozuna Flohru showed us that repromotion was no fluke, scoring a third consecutive Yusho with a comfortable for point lead over Neko. Flohru also grabs the Shukun-sho and Fus'Award. A rare Gino-sho was awarded to Tameiki for a rare balanced performance. I don't think I recall a basho were no Kanto-sho was awarded - so this may be a first. We had a reduced playing field for Nagoya - I hope that Covid isn't to blame for this one - and that we are going to have more players for Aki. Despite all the Covid absences, scores were in a similar range to Natsu Basho. Flohru wasn't to be distracted and clinched a consecutive Yusho ahead of Athenayama, who edged Neko on rank. This time Flohru also takes the Shukun-sho and Gino-sho, with Yusho pursuers Athenayam (Abudi's Award) and Neko (Fus' Award) taking the rest. I still owe everyone results for Natsu and Nagoya - so here we go: A setting familiar to everyone - ex-Yokozuna Flohru got back to his Yusho-winning days, crushing his opponents with a 6-point advantage. Fellow Ozeki Kaiowaka clinches the Jun-Yusho. Surprisingly enough, Flohru only gets one more award - Abudi's for predicting the most losses. Tameiki collects all other rewards - including the Muppet-sho which explains why he's not a Yusho contender. As usual the Gino-sho is not awarded. And finally the Banzuke post Hatsu 2022! As announced above - we conratulate Kaiowaka for his promotion to Ozeki and commiserate with Flohru how had been Yokozuna in the games, at least since 1796. Flohru could earn immediate repromotion with a Yusho at 10-5 or a score of 11-4 or better. Athenayama eked out another KK - but would need a 9-6 JY at a minimum to be considered for Ozeki promotion. 2022 started with the best possible result - the first Yusho of Neko since administering the game - once every 5 years is not a record to be proud of, but you take what you can get. In other news 2022 started exactly how 2021 has ended, a strong performance by Kaiowaka, taking the Jun-Yusho and another MK by our Yokozuna Flohru. As a result we no longer have a Yokozuna but two Ozeki on the Banzuke for Haru Basho. Neko grabs most of the prizes - the Shukun-sho and Kanto-sho as well as the Abudis' Award, with Tameiki taking the Fus'Award (just ahead of Athenayama). And finally the Banzuke. After two MK our Yokozuna Flohru is in danger of being demoted to Ozeki - a KK in Hatsu 2022 is imperative. The FYDC also convened and preemptively dismissed any talks of retirement in case of a MK in January - the FYDC insists that any rank above FAWL Juryo is more than good enough to continue competing. Since the two Yusho of Kaiowaka came off a bad MK, the FODC would like to see a bit more consistency for an Ozeki promotion but hinted that a KK in Hatsu 2022 would most likely do the trick. Similarly, Athenayama's KK kept his Ozeki run alive, but the FODC insists that a Yusho/Jun-Yusho or at least a record of 9-6 or better would be needed to make the jump. Happy New Year everyone! Last year's Kyushu Basho saw the second consecutive Yusho of Kaiowaka and the second consecutive makekoshi of Yokozuna Flohru - what will 2022 bring to us FAWLers? Torafuji fought tooth and nail for his chance at the Yuhso but was edged out by Kaiowaka in a behind-closed-doors Ketteisen. Kaiowaka also takes the Shukun-sho, Kanto-sho and the Fus' Award. If you want to know who's winning - ask Kaiowaka - he won the Fus' Award 4 out of the last 6 basho. If you want to know who's losing, Torafuji may be your best bet - he's won the Abudi Award 3 out of the last 6 basho. The results better late than never? Our sole Yokozuna might disagree. Kaiowaka clinches his first Yusho since the onset of Covid and Athenayama finishes second - getting successive Jun-Yushos. Is it too early to talk about a FAWL Ozeki for Athenayama? A strong showing in Kyushu might just be enough to tip the scales after a solid string of kachi-koshi performances. Athenayama also takes the Kanto-sho and Shukun-sho., with Kaiowaka claiming the Fus and Terarno the Abudi award. In other major news - this must be the first make-koshi for our sole Yokozuna Flohru since I started administering the game - everyone expects a strong bounce-back in Kyushu.
