    Adoptee Report

Well both my adoptees finished 5-2 which was nice. Way to go guys! Nishikikaze was ranked at Ms 40 after a run of Ms 33: 4-3, Ms 26: 3-4, Ms 33: 3-4. Nishikikaze is approaching 30 and so I don't expect him to become sekitori anymore but he has done a good job of staying competitve in Makushita over the years and one never knows ... if he can keep himself in good condition and work his way back to the promotion zone, he could accidentally get there one day. Sasaki was back down in Sandanme at Sd 31 after his Makushita debut didn't go so well in Kyushu. His previous records were Sd 29: 3-4, Sd 46: 6-1 ! , Ms 57 1-6. He is still very young even though he's been in Sandanme for a few years and so he may end up becoming a Makushita regular in time. As for Juryo, I feel that he took too long to get past Sandanme so I don't expect that he can do it but he is still young (is he 20?) and so we cannot know everything about his potential yet.

    Smiling Rikishi

You know, we all like to crack jokes about him, but to be honest, Iwakiyama has one of the most interesting faces I have ever seen in my life. I think I will do a painting. I haven't cracked any jokes but I know what you mean - he IS funny looking. I think it's obvious that I agree about his interesting face (see avatar). If you do a painting, I will be very pleased to see it.

    Sumo statistics

I can answer this question..... YES! No he isn't. Just for the sake of it, anyone who IS interested, please add your signature. I am. Very interested. I'm interested too. I've been starting to collect my own data but I don't have the time or training to put together the kind of package described. Also, what is mixi? I've got to get my wordtank repaired so I can do some proper reading practice again if this data is available only on japanese sites.

    Sandanme Game

Welcome to another round of the Sandanme Game. The banzuke is under construction and I'll present that once Xmas preparations are over. I will be collecting your picks anytime you have them ready to send in. For those who have not been following along, here is a link to the previous basho of the Sandanme Game. http://www.sumoforum.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=10572 Here is how the game works ... Pick 15 Sandanme riksihi. I have divided the division into 15 groups (15 is a useful number in sumogames) The top half of Sandanme is divided into 10 groups - Sd 1-5, Sd 6-10 etc. The lower half of Sandanme is divided into 5 groups - Sd 51-60, Sd 61-70 etc. Pick one rikishi from each group and send them to me at nmatsuo@shaw.ca Scoring You earn .1 point for each win by your rikishi. You earn .1 point for each kachikoshi rikishi. You earn .1 point for each rikishi who leads his group. With 15 rikishi, you could earn up to 13.5 points. We want scores out of 15 for nice win-loss results. The extra 1.5 points are based on the sandame yusho winning score. If you have the yusho winner you get the full 1.5 If you have a rikishi with as many wins as the yusho winner (a playoff match loser) you get 1.0 points. If you have a rikishi with one win less than the yusho winner you earn 0.5 points. Drones Unless there are 15 7-0 rikishi, it is not possible to get 15 points - the best possible team is represented by the drone Mirai who knows the future and picks the best possible lineup. Our scores will be adjusted at the end of the tournament so that Mirai's score will round to 15-0. The drone Genzai will select the most popular rikishi from each group. Genzai's selections will not be known until all entries are in. Typically, our collective picks do very well. Only the best of us will beat Genzai. The drone Mukashi selects the rikishi who had the best records last tournament or beyond if there is a tie. I will post Mukashi's selections soon (or check Mirai's picks in the previous basho thread). Mirai always has the best record but is not eligible to win the yusho. Mukashi tends to have one of the poorer records but last tournament, Genzai and Mukashi had very similar and very strong teams. They finished ahead of everyone except Mirai, the yusho winner (Itachi), Asashosakari, Randomitsuki, and Tamanaogijima. I look forward to receiving your selections. Itachi p.s. Lower division fans may also enjoy Fay's new game. There is a nice website to support it as well!

I'm not sure that Sugishita was intentionally losing. I think he had one plan - to grab the belt. When he couldn't get it, he had nowhere to go - he was so far bent over and leaning forward that he was sure to be pushed down and so he elected to fall safely to avoid pain. After all the loses he has endured, and considering his youth and lack of size, I can appreciate that. Certainly, he has no talent or understanding of sumo and should retire but I can't help but wonder how he is during keiko. Does he give a good effort there or just float around? Does he get harshly punished or ignored? Why is he allowed to continue? Is he useful around the heya? Does his family contribute money? I haven't seen bouts of the other 'persistents'. Are there any of them who put up a good effort en route to losing?

Doitsuyama has done well but will need a lot of luck to pull in front. There are only two 7 win rikishi. 2 of us picked Kagaya and 5 of us selected Masuhikari. The loser of the kettei-sen will earn 10 yusho bonus points and the winner, the full 15. Will this affect the winner of our game? Yes it might! Randomitsuki has Kagaya while Asashosakari has Masuhikari. If Kagaya wins the yusho, that could be enough to put Randomitsuki ahead.Susanoo is stradling the kk line despite having more losses than wins thanks to Tokitairyu's 6-1 record (one less than the yusho lead). Fay leads the unlucky few who have more wins than losses but are mk overall due to a lack of really strong performers.Good luck on day 14.

    New Game

Wow, I'm winning! I'll probably drop down once the daily guesses are factored in because I didn't make any guesses. I couldn't remember who I selected! Now that I have a chance to finish well, I'll have to try and figure out where I put my pre-basho notes. As for setting up tables, I received some help from a kind forum member (was it Asashosakari?) in the form of a bunch of code that will make a table out of data in a spreadsheet in a form that can be cut and pasted into this message window. I've monkeyed around with it a bit and you see the result in my Sandanme Game posts. I'm not at my computer now, but I'll find time to send you (Fay) a sample of the code if you like.

I think it's all rikishi with wins > losses. If so, then one of your guys must have dropped from 3-2 to 3-3. Itachi replies> Yes, that's exactly right. It's kachikoshi trending rikishi. It's because your best rikishi(s) after Day 11 had four wins (4-2 or 4-1), so you were two wins away from the yusho lead (6-0). One or several of your 4-1 rikishi won on Day 12, getting you within one win of the yusho lead again, so you got back the 5 yusho points. I suggest making bonus-point comparisons only between the standings from even-numbered days...the odd-numbered days can be a bit misleading due to the split torikumi in the lower divisions. A good suggestion. Some of us were really bouncing around there.

That puts him 2 wins behind the yusho race leaders and cost him 100% of the yusho bonus. On the other hand, Susanoo and Tamanaogijima are able to stay above the kk line despite having more losses than wins since they have at least one rikishi still in the yusho race lead with 6 wins.Good luck on day 12.

One of the biggest point drains is to have none of your 15 rikishi stay in the yusho race. Asashosakari seems to have a good lead on the rest of us. Randomitsuki, Doitsuyama, and Aderechelseamaru are still close enough to keep him on his toes though. Kintamayama is falling behind. He has 9 kachikoshi trending rikishi which is good but very few of them are the best in their groups and none of them are keeping up with the yusho race leaders and this is what is holding him back.7 of us would be below the kk line if we left it at wins and losses. With the kk and group win points as well as the yusho lead bonus, only 2 of us are below the line.Mirai has 9 losses now to go with 6 undefeated rikishi. Good luck on day 10.

    Gambling and Sumo

I'm a member at tradesports but I never play. I just like to observe the action and see how real events can affect the odds. ( I especially like checking to see who tradesports players think will run for US president in 2008). I'd be very tempted to play if sumo were on the menu except that the only other players would be keen observers of the sport like us forum members and so my specialized knowledge would be shared by all my competitors. Also, Toki isn't around anymore to soak up unrealistic fan support. Who do we like without justification now? Any relatively new foreigner I suppose. I agree with Aderechelseamaru that the games we play here are best left for fun. The are all sorts of places to gamble if you wish but our sumofan community has thrived on free exchange of information and there would be an opportunity cost associated with information if there were money at stake in any of our games. Let our games remain free of financial rewards so that we can maintain the free flow of information about sumo and all, regardless of economic standing, can compete to their hearts content without fear of consequence. If you really want to gamble on sumo, learn to read japanese well and find a japan based underground gambling site. I'm sure there are a few. I once played a sort of sumo lottery at my local liquor store in Hachinohe. There was a big list of prizes you would win if the combination of rikishi you picked did well enough relative to everyone elses. This was a fairly public contest. I'm sure there are lots of unoffical ones going on for real money instead of merchandise.

If Sugishita and Morikawa have a match where Morikawa can win his 4th and Sugishita his first then shouldn't there be kensho for the winner? Is it possible to purchase kensho for a non-sekitori match? Are there enough of us persistence watchers with enough resolve to put one up? How much would it cost?

    Makushita Game Hatsu 2007

Seems as if my "most average" picks were not the worst :-) Ganzohnesushi I used to be Mr. Most Average in this game a lot and I tended to do well (but not win). Since I lost the knack for picking the popular rikishi, I've done poorly. Somehow I seem to be doing ok this time without having the most average picks. It has been a strange tournament though (or is it just me?).

Ah, right you are - I got it backwards! I was reading the standings from the table script in my post so it wasn't easy to read.

    Personal Rant..

I feel I ought to add my voice to this contributors appreciation thread as I have enjoyed mostly lurking and leeching information over the years. I'm a bit envious of those who are in a position to hang around where all the action is and report on it but it's quite likely that even if I lived in the heart of Ryogoku, I wouldn't find the time to contribute as well as our under paid reporting staff do. As Kintamayama pointed out, the lurking has never been better. This forum was always good but now all kinds of material is available that I would never have thought to ask for. I wonder if there are any Japanese language forums like this with equivalent nourishment for the sumo otaku? Could it be that this community of international fans represents that broadest source of timely information on ozumo available online?

Mirai is at the top, Mukashi at the bottom, and Genzai is right at the median! Also everyone below Genzai has a makekoshi record while everyone above is on pace for kachikoshi.Good luck on day 7.

Wow! He's got 30 losses and one fusen-sho as his offical record - 35 losses if you count his 0-5 maezumo outing! Even if he is very young, how long does he go on before hanging it up? Do they do a danpatsushiki or anything for the lower division guys or is that just for sekitori? Of course I would love to see him rewarded for his persistence with a successful career but now I'll settle for seing him get just one non-fusen win before giving up. Here comes the data miner question - what's the futility record? Who suffered the most losses before their first non-fusen win? Probably inclusion of maezumo will be too difficult but it would be fun to include it if the data is available.
