It is still early but exactly half of the human players are below the kk line and half above. It may not be as much fun for those who are losing but having half kk and half mk is the way sumo competitions are supposed to work so that is good. I just hope that it isn't always the same rikishi losing each basho because I don't want anyone getting discouraged. 11 of us (including semi-human Genzai) have just one more win than losses or the other way around which again is nearly half the human players.Genzai seems to be a bit of a cyborg as its picks are entirely based on human decisions (our collective choices). The other two drone's picks are based only on the actual results (past or future) and are independant of human will (except as it regards the rikishi themselves who determine the results through their actions on the dohyo).Day 6 is nearly underway. Good luck everyone.Itachi (who is looking forward to crowning a new champion but will do his best to make them earn it)

Ok, Kyokutenho now has Japanese citizenship but clearly he is mongolian and until very recently was not Japanese in any way. None of the 6 rikishi involved in the final three bouts today is Japanese. Has this happened often before? Ever before? I could do my own research but I think it's more fun to put it out there for those who have the really skookum database engines to hunt down these sorts of queries. Who would normally be in the final three bouts? The yokozuna is foreign as are two of the ozeki so if these three sanyaku have the last matches then they need only foreign opponents to fit the query. Kyokutenho, Kokkai, Roho, and Ama have appeared in the final matches of the day fairly frequently so perhaps today is not a first but I doubt that an all foreigner final three bouts occured in the days of the Hawaiians.

Well, once again stormy weather has interrupted my sumo game maintenance. I'm writing from the office where I don't have my Sandanme Game files to work with. If both power and my internet connection are working before I fall asleep tonight, I'll send out the Day 3 results. Otherwise, the next update will be for Day 4. We're off to Okasan's for dinner since they have power and they also have NHK so perhaps I'll see last night's highlights on sumo digest.

Mirai has moved ahead of Aderechelseamaru for the overall lead and Genzai is ahead of Mukashi. Neither Genzai nor Mukashi are off to that good of a start though! All rikishi who failed to appear for their day 1 bout have now announced their kyujo status and all who picked them have been advised of their replacement options. As every rikishi has had a bout now, no further choices can be made so anyone who did not indicate a choice has received the default pick - Mukashi's pick for any kyujo rikishi.I would like to thank everyone again for making this game a continuing success. I am glad all of you who gave it a try have found it worthwhile to continue and I am pleased that we have attracted 7 new players. Naturally, I would prefer to have a nice website and some automation to help me run this game but I won't have time to learn how to do much of that for the next few basho so hopefully my posts on this subforum thread are adequate.Good luck on day 3 (any minute now).

As the tournament continues, I'll start to include the kk and group lead points as well as the yusho points that are inculded in the final scoring.Asashosakari is listed above Mirai which is a first. Neither have a loss and Asashosakari is earlier in the alphabet (and Mirai is at the end of my spreadsheet).Mukashi is ranked ahead of Genzai which is also unusual but not every rikishi has had a match yet - only about 1/4 of Sandanme rikishi started on day 2.Good luck on day 2 (yes, I know it has already happened)Itachi

To answer Asashosakari and Randomitsuki, changes for kyujo rikishi are allowed as long as the replacements haven't had a bout yet. The default is to replace missing rikishi with Mukashi's pick (which I'll post when I get back home tonight) but in every case I've emailed the player to offer the choice. I hadn't visited the forum this morning when I sent out the replacement messages so I'll adjust the replacements accordingly tonight. Thanks to everyone for playing. Itachi

Now all former players have returned! We have 20 returnees form last basho (including the 3 drones) and 7 new players for a total of 27 - a new record. Good luck to all of us. I, for one, would like to see a new winner (only Doitsuyama and I have won so far). I've sent messages to all about their kyujo rikishi except the vry last two entrants, Yubiquitoyama and Sekihiryu. I won't be able to verify their lineups until tomorrow so hopefully there won't be any changes necessary. See you on the dohyo. Itachi

Thanks for your dedication! I also find pre-basho games work better when I'm busy but then I've gone and committed myself to daily updates so there goes all the time I saved by cutting back on daily games. We have 3 new players so far and there are just four former players unaccounted for (not including Sekihiryu who has declared his intention to participate). 3 of these 4 normally come in on the final day so it is likely that we will have the largest turnout yet.

Thanks for the advice but I already stayed up until the wee hours of the morning manually updating the scgroup files I used last time. I may have made mistakes but I've got from the Yokozuna down to the bottom of Sandanme completed. I don't think I'll bother to do Jonidan or Jonokuchi. The drawback to using Doitsuyama's post alone is that you can't see the past basho records alongside. When scgroup updates, it is super easy to find Mukashi's selections for example. Also, my scoring sheet reads the win-loss columns that scgroup updates daily. I'd have to redesign my sheets or manually enter wins and losses without it. If I'm forced to update scores manually, there might not be daily updates as some nights there simply isn't enough time.

This is just to bump up the thread and remind everyone to get their Makushita Game picks in. As for me, I'll send mine right now. Itachi

There is just under 3 days left to go and only 6 are missing from last time. Most of these tend to enter at the last minute so we could continue our streak of not losing any players. There is one new player so we could have 21 in this time - perhaps more if others join. Still unaccounted for are Oshirokita, Doitsuyama, Asashosakari, Tamanaogijima, Sekihiryu, and Yubiquitoyama. The new banzuke isn't available at the customized sumo results site yet so I haven't been able to process your entries yet. If they don't update that site, I'll have to do it the long way but it will get done! Itachi

Yeah, Profomisakari, where are you? It was a bit late by the time I posted the banzuke and it seems I've put Yubiquitoyama in twice. I don't have my notes with me now so it'll have to wait until later tonight when I get home but I expect that one of those Yubiquitoyamas is supposed to be you. Sorry for the mix up. Itachi Ok, by checking the results from last basho, I can see that Profomisakari should be right behind Yubiquitoyama. I've edited the banzuke accordingly.

Since so many of us acheived kk, 8-7 is not such a great record to have and those are getting trampled down by players with better records who deserve to rise to the top. Particularly at the bottom of the banzuke, at least 10 wins were needed to assure upwards movement. Surely, there are better banzuke experts that me who can critique my banzuke. I am open to critisicms and suggestions. I am especially open to volunteers for banzuke making. I just want to avoid a crowded sanyaku so if it takes 10 wins to move up, so be it. I will probably post again before the new year but if not, here are my best wishes for all of you for 2007.Itachi

This game looks like fun. I especially like that it incorporates all 6 divisions. I'll add this to my list of things to do before shonichi. Itachi

Gusoyama wrote: Dune - I shamelessly admit that I love the movie(the directors cut), no matter the actual quality or veracity of it. The first few books I read when I was young, and loved them. Like Manakineko said, they don't age very well. Itachi replies: I was free to enjoy Lynch's Dune movie because I hadn't read any of the novels. I enjoyed it thorougly! I've managed to enjoy Harry Potter movies and the LOTR movies in the same way. Did you hate the Starship Troopers movie? Too bad you read the book! I thought it was pretty cool in a tongue-in-cheek way. I like old pulp SF with it's cartoonish excess. Starship Troopers with those silly bugs captured the over-the-top absurd aspect of old-time SF for me. I guess the Aliens movies came before the novels. Both were easy to digest fun. As for LOTR, I should have read the novels as a kid but I was a know-it-all D&D dungeon master and I was so steeped in the ways of orcs and hobbits through my familiarity with the D&D guide books that reading LOTR seemed redundant. I'd heard all about it so many times from friends that I just felt like I knew the whole story already. I read THE WORM OUROBOROUS and other Fantasy/SF books instead. I did try to read the Silmarillion but after a while I decided I'd rather read the phone book or the dictionary instead.

This thread makes me wish I had the kind of time and energy for reading I did when I was in my teens. I'll mention Zelazny's AMBER series again because it's one of the few I actually reread. I enjoyed the second series as well but the first one is the one that grabs you. A lot of Zelazny's stuff is good reading. I especially liked Doorways In the Sand - I identify with that guy hanging out on the roof plotting new ways to delay graduation! I enjoyed Asimov's FOUNDATION Trilogy and I keep meaning to reread that. How about the LENSMAN series by E.E. Doc Smith? That goes way back to the pulp era. There was even an animated movie which I found as bewildering as the novels. That's another one on my reread list. The RINGWORLD series by Larry Niven. I liked the HEECHEE novels by Frederick Pohl. On a lighter note: When I was a kid, I couldn't turn the pages of CS Lewis's NARNIA series fast enough. I reread it immediately after finishing. I enjoyed Timothy Zahn's first STAR WARS novel trilogy with Grand Admiral Thrawn but the mediocrity of subsequent STAR WARS universe novels has soured me on even that one.

Well it wasn't my worst outing but not my best either. As Wakatanuki in Bench Sumo: 9-6 in Makuuchi only 2 wins behind the yusho winner. As Itachi: Seki-toto: Good result! 11-4. Fellow Vancouverite Oshirokita's 11-3-1 made ours the top city in this game I expect. Juryo Game: 7-8 in Makuuchi - fairly disappointing since I was an Ozeki not too long ago. I seem to have lost touch with this division despite my efforts at understanding the divisions beneath. I blame the failures of Mokonami, Dewaotori, and other young shin-sekitori this year for my rapid decline. I tend to go for exciting young rikishi over declining aged ones on the rebound and this wan't the year for that. Non-sumogames.com games: Pick The Yusho Winners: 11-4 in Makuuchi - jun-yusho! Lost to Doitsuyama by a couple of points. No shame in that. Makushita Game: 6-9. I think that's my worst performance yet in this game. I picked both my adopted rikishi even though neither one was really the best pick in their bracket but even that doesn't fully explain my decline. Banzuke Surfing: 6-1 in both 1st and 2nd waves. I'm pleased. Sandanme Game: In the 3rd basho for this game, I won my second yusho. 12-3 this time. I'm glad Doitsuyama won last time because otherwise I'd be dominating the game I created and administer. This is one game I'd prefer to lose but I'm not going to make bad picks on purpose. I won't cheat the others out of the strongest available competition. I fully expect to be beaten next time by at least 3 or 4 of the other players but one never knows ... I'm sorely tempted to begin a Jonidan Game just for the silliness of it but if 20 of you actually played the game, I'd be really stretched for time to keep up with it. I don't see much point in a Jonokuchi Game since most of those rikishi are totally unknown newcomers or banzuke-gai returnees whose condition and ability are very much a mystery to anyone who can't drop in to the heya now and then. Some are more established rikishi who have dropped down due to injury or mediocrity but it's not much fun just trying to guess whether the injured guys will have recovered enough to defeat the mediocre guys. Back to the topic: How did you do in the games? I managed not to miss a single day despite all the power and internet disruptions (it helps that I only play 2 daily games but I do submit daily posts for two games as well). Until Heisei 19 (that's right isn't it?) Itachi
