For the first time ever I selected one of my adoptees in a sumogame. I even selected BOTH of them and I was rewarded with two losing records. Nishikaze had gone 4-3; 4-3; 3-4 and this tournament at Ms 33 he went 3-4 again. I didn't see any obvious winners in his barcket (Ms 33-36) in the Makushita Game so I figured, why not take a chance that he can do 4-3. I don't mind the miss - he came close. Sasaki got vaulted up way beyond his best rank to Makushita for the first time this tournament. After 3-4; 4-3 records in mid-Sandanme he went 6-1 from Sd 46 or so in Aki to earn his Makushita debut where he split his his two decisions before losing 5 straight to end 1-6. Again, I didn't see anyone is his bracket that I felt confident about reaching kk so I took a chance on him for fun. As it happens, only 2 of the 8 rikishi in that bracket (Ms 57-60) earned their kk. Still, he was tied for worst with another 1-6 performer so I guess I shouldn't have let my heart take over. I may not get the chance to see both my guys in that same division again so I'm glad I seized the opportunity even it the result was failure. Itachi

Marujama wrote: Ok, I'm too quite a new member of this forum, but I've read it for a bit longer time. Is it really possible or acceptable for a member to take himself a name of active rikishi (and I'm talking about the starter of this thread). As I know, in Estonian sumo-forum only one member can carry the name of active rikishi - and he is the rikishi himself. Just such thoughts just came to my mind after reading this thread. Itachi replies: To each his or her own. I prefer to see a bit of individuality and originaliy so I'd prefer not to see real rikishi names used as forum names but if someone feels differently, I don't care. I find myself wondering whether my own name is original. Was there ever an Itachi in Ozumo? Ok, not so likely but it is possible that some well chosen forum names may have coincidentaly been real shikona. Everyone should be aware of any active sekitori shikona and avoid using it IMO, but if someone wants to use an unused (and preferably non-Hall Of Fame) shikona then why not? Itachi

I'll post a recap later with the scores converted to win-loss records and with a banzuke for next tournament.Firstly, thanks to everyone for playing. I am impressed that nearly everyone managed to get more wins than losses from their rikishi. Is this game too easy? The one player who had more losses than wins was Neko and Neko-san still managed to find 9 kk rikishi. Unfortunately none of those 9 finished with more than 5 wins. The yusho points formula is the same one I used last time and now that I look at it, it seems there is no provision for 10 points so we get the full 15 for having a 7 win rikishi and only 5 for having a 6 win one. I could manually adjust those scores to reduce the yusho points for those who did not have Tokusegawa (the kettei-sen winner) and some of us would have lower final scores. It may not make much difference but I'll look into it.I'll make a post revealing Mirai's team later on too.Now I'm off to play in the new fallen snow with my kids! It doesn't snow very often around here so we're enjoying it.Itachi

Now that Hallowe'en is over, it is time to give serious consideration to the Kyushu basho. The banzuke has been released and sumo gamers thoughout the world are preparing themselves to make their selections in an ever increasing variety of sumogames. Some of these sumo fans are interested in the non-sekitori divisions - perhaps to keep an eye on future sekitori or perhaps for the enjoyment of watching the progress of new rikishi who have yet to discover their potential. Perhaps some of us just enjoy a fresh new frontier for indulging our competitve urges. Whatever the reason, the lower divsion games are here for these sumo gamers. The Juryo Game introduced me to this world. To make a judgement on new sekitori, I had to take a good look at their performance in Makushita in previous tournaments. Much later, Oshirokita invited us to consider who might compete for a yusho in each of the divisions right down to Jonokuchi. Randomitsuki offered us a chance to test our ability to predict successful rikishi througout the Makushita division. Sumogamers responded and the games now enjoy a modest but loyal following. I had been calling for a Makushita game for several basho before Randomitsuki actually made it happen and I felt that I should make the next contribution to lower division gaming myself, hence the Sandanme Game. This will be the third tournament for this game and the number of participants more than doubled last time so that we had close to our target of one half the number of players in the Makushita Game. Lower division games are not for everyone and so I expect the number of players to remain low but I welcome any and all who wish to give it a try. For those who have not been following along, here is a link to the previous basho of the Sandanme Game. http://www.sumoforum.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=10029 I have been learning on the job and the table displays have gotten better. The scoring system works and all that remains is to set up a banzuke. I haven't done that yet, but I'll get one out there this weekend. Here is how the game works ... Pick 15 Sandanme riksihi. I have divided the division into 15 groups (15 is a useful number in sumogames) The top half of Sandanme is divided into 10 groups - Sd 1-5, Sd 6-10 etc. The lower half of Sandanme is divided into 5 groups - Sd 51-60, Sd 61-70 etc. Pick one rikishi from each group and send them to me at nmatsuo@shaw.ca Scoring You earn .1 point for each win by your rikishi. You earn .1 point for each kachikoshi rikishi. You earn .1 point for each rikishi who leads his group. With 15 rikishi, you could earn up to 13.5 points. We want scores out of 15 for nice win-loss results. The extra 1.5 points are based on the sandame yusho winning score. If you have the yusho winner you get the full 1.5 If you have a rikishi with as many wins as the yusho winner (a playoff match loser) you get 1.0 points. If you have a rikishi with one win less than the yusho winner you earn 0.5 points. Drones Unless there are 15 7-0 rikishi, it is not possible to get 15 points - the best possible team is represented by the drone Mirai who knows the future and picks the best possible lineup. Our scores will be adjusted at the end of the tournament so that Mirai's score will round to 15-0. The drone Genzai will select the most popular rikishi from each group. Genzai's selections will not be known until all entries are in. The drone Mukashi selects the rikishi who had the best records last tournament or beyond if there is a tie. I will post Mukashi's selections this weekend. Mirai always has the best record but is not eligible to win the yusho. Mukashi tends to have one of the poorer records so you should aim to do better than just pick the best rikishi from last time. I look forward to receiving your selections. Itachi

Sorry, is it just me? I can't view any of these bouts - i only get the audio.

Depends on our remaining picks. :-) Me going 4-2 and you going 4-5 (for example) isn't that unrealistic, unless there are many identical rikishi among our picks. And I can't even begin to guess what the bracket-winner bonuses will end up looking like. Anyway, even Randomitsuki shouldn't be counted out, I think. But you have all picks in front of you and I don't, so I'm just speculating. (Blushing...)Edit: My six remaining rikishi only went 3-3, so that's probably it for me.I haven't figured out how to arrange everyone's lineups with their current records yet but here's who everyone picked (excepting Mirai whose picks will be figured out soon). If there is a kyujo rikishi in yor list, they will have been replaced as promised but let me know if there is any discrepancy that you notice.I aim to set up a nice table to present each score form each rikishi in each player's team each day but this month's work has been interrupted by successive power outages so perhaps in January ...[table] Kyushu 06 lineups Profomisakari Fay Mukashi Itachi Randomitsuki Wolfgangho Holleshoryu Kotononami Aderechelseamaru Torideyama Neko Tamanaogijima Oshirokita Sekihiryu Imumaru Doitsuyama Asashosakari Yubiquitoyama Genzai [tr] Taika 1. Neither one of us has a 6-0 rikishi who could emerge as a difference maker for the yusho so it seems almost impssible for Asashosakari to defeat me at this late stage. Good luck on senshuraku.Itachi

As of now, neither bench sumo nor sekitoto have been updated so that picks for day 10 cannot be made and results from day 9 are not prepared. Will we need to implement a backup plan and send picks to various gyoji today?

Ok, here is a more complete table of results for you.Now that the tournament is more than half complete, I'm including the kk, group win, and even the projected yusho points so you can see how your final score is shaping up.The est. kk column counts how many of your rikishi have a majority of wins to date. If your rikishi is 2-2 they are not counted. The group win column counts how many of your rikishi are tied for the most wins in their group. The best column shows the number of wins for your best rikishi. If this also the leading score for the whole division then you are projected to have the yusho winner and you get the full 15 yusho points for that (at basho end it will be only 10 if your rikishi loses in the playoff). If your best has just one less than the 'yusho' score then you get just 5 yusho points. The score is a result of adding all your wins, kk, group leads, and the yusho bonus points.Since Mirai is our benchmark of perfection, results are scaled just enough for Mirai to have a score of 14.5 (rounds to 15-0 record). Everyone gets a little boost that way to make up for the fact that it is not possible to have 15 7-0 rikishi all win the yusho. Here is the table. I think everything is correct now but with so many cells and references, there could be something out of place.I seem to have taken over the lead for today. Not only because of the added factors but my overall win-loss record is currently best. Some of you who do not have a lot of kk or group leading rikishi will have win-loss scores that are better than your overall score. I've ranked us by overall score today.Good luck on day 9.Itachi

Yubiquitoyama, Doitsuyama, and Asashosakari are close behind. Genzai has pulled ahead of Mukashi which should be good news for everyone since we collectively made Genzai's picks. At the bottom end, Fay and Neko both had good outings and are climbing towards kk territory.Good luck on Nakabi.ItachiOne more thing, notice that Mirai now has 2 losses. That means there are two groups without undefeated rikishi (or possibly one group with no one better than 2 losses but I don't think so).

Right you are! The formula was off in my spreadsheet. I've fixed it and you still have 8 group leaders after day 7.

Sandanme Game Kyushu 06 Day 6 Results shikona wins losses wins/15 Mirai 45 0 15 Asashosakari 35 10 11.67 Yubiquitoyama 35 10 11.67 Itachi 34 11 11.33 Doitsuyama 33 12 11 Randomitsuki 31 14 10.33 Mukashi 30 15 10 Genzai 30 15 10 Torideyama 29 16 9.67 Tamanaogijima 29 16 9.67 Holleshoryu 28 17 9.33 Sekihiryu 28 17 9.33 Profomisakari 27 18 9 Imumaru 27 18 9 Oshirokita 26 19 8.67 Kotononami 23 22 7.67 Aderechelseamaru 23 22 7.67 Wolfgangho 22 22 7.5 Fay 19 25 6.48 Neko 19 26 6.33 And Fay has fought as promised! She went 4-2 last night overtaking Neko who has a poor outing with a 3-6 result.Yubiquitoyama and Asashosakari appear tied based only on wins and losses but Yubi-zeki has an incredible 14 rikishi trending towards kk to Asa's 12 (which is also very good). In addition, Asashosakari oddly has no rikishi leading their group - not one?! I'll have to check my formulae again. Anyway, Doitsuyama is the leader in this category - still the only one with more than half (8). Yubi-zeki has 6. Mukashi is listed ahead of Genzai but it really should be the other way around as Genzai beats Mukashi in kk and they are identical otherwise. I found it odd that these two have been so close all tournament and upon inspection, it seems that they have 11 picks in common!Since Genzai is determined by our collective picks, many of us must have relied heavily on the last basho results to make our selections. This may not seem unusual but in the first two trials of this game, our collective favorite picks did much better than the best previous record team of Mukashi so this is a departure. On the bright side, both Genzai and Mukashi are doing fairly well. It may be that this time the best performers from last basho are still the best prospects for this one.Our measuring stick for that is Mirai. Comparing Mirai's current projected picks (we won't know for sure until the end) there are 5 rikishi who have been selected (may have been) by all three drones. 5 of the 11 shared picks of Genzai and Mukashi are currently the best available. One last item: Collectively (including the drones) our winning % is 63.8Well done everyone.Good luck on day 7.Itachi

That will most surely come down to the limping maegashira: Hakurozan (0-5) vs. Baruto (4-1)... Picking Hakurozan doesnt seem like a very good idea after all... (Help me...) Both guys were hurting last tournament and there hasn't been a lot of clear information about their condition. If both were healthy, both would do very well at their current rank. I took Hakurozan in Bench Sumo as did many others. It was a gamble.

Everything except the phone has been re-established but we are expecting more strong winds tomorrow...It's still a bit early to look at including the kk and group leader points but if we did, Doitsuyama and myself would be tied for the lead. Doitsuyama has the group leader (or co-leader) in 8 of the 15 groups!Good luck tonight.Itachi

We have 20 players now (including the 3 drones) and no one is missing from previous tournaments so I am very pleased. This pushes me to find more efficient ways of collecting entries and inputing them into my massive spreadsheet system but that will be a project for December. The selection stats have changed a bit due to a few last minute entries. I'll have those up along with Genzai's selections soon.Yubiquitoyama is receiving Mukashi's pick for the Sd16-20 group unless he can find another rikishi in that group who hasn't had a day 1 match (before his day 2 match!). Neko is also receiving a replacement pick due to a kyujo rikishi and unless these players respond with different instructions, those replacements will remain.A message to Kotononami: I've had no success in replying to the address you sent your picks from so that is why you did not receive a confirmation message. It is good that you didn't have a kyujo problem!Good luck on Day 2Itachi

Doitsuyama, Asashosakari, and Yubiquitoyama are the latest entrants (but not too late).Without considering the latest entries, 107 of the 200 Sandanme rikishi have been selected by at least one player. 5 of those were kyujo and so they have been replaced by active rikishi. I am still waiting for confirmation from Neko on this but the default is to grant Mukashi's pick in place of any kyujo rikishi.Tochinoshin and Ikehara are the most popular so far with 10 of 16 selecting them. The first, third, and sixth groups each had 8 of 10 rikishi selected so those may have been the toughest ones to pick.I hope you all enjoy this game as much as I enjoy running it. I'll do my best to update the standings regularly and I thank you all for playing.Good luckItachi

As Akai is injured, Mukashi selects the next best previous record - Kotobuki for the 71-80 group. So far I have entries from these rikishi. Itachi Profomisakari Fay Randomitsuki Wolfgangho Holleshoryu Kotononami Aderechelseamaru Torideyama Neko Tamanaogijima and, of course the three drones, Mukashi, Genzai, and Mirai. Mukashi's picks are already listed above. These are the rikishi with the best previous records. Once the deadline has passed (all rikishi have had a bout) I'll present Genzai's picks. Genzai picks the most popular rikishi so Genzai must wait until no more selections can be made. Mirai's picks are unknowable until the end of the tournment since it picks those who will finish with the best records. We are still waiting for 5 of the players from last time but we have 2 new players (counting Randomitsuki who participated in maezumo with his late entry last time). Itachi

Is Kuramarujo's webtrek entry form good for this basho as well? I just put my entry in there but I can send it by email as well if necessary.
