Little bird singing, Above the city's sirens, I can still hear you.
-
I would say that was pretty weird, but then I have no idea how many people go missing in western countries. From personal experience I only know of one person that disappeared for some years as a young man, and we randomly bumped into each other a decade later in a pub. He told me he didn't want to be around his family anymore, and that was that. One of the people in the video you linked gave the excuse that a company he took over went bust, but I don't know, can shame alone cause him to abandon those close to him? I'd bet there was more to the situation than that.

Happy birthday! Sorry I'm late :)

A very happy birthday to you!

My first basho watching Hoshoryu has left me feeling a little confused about him. Sometimes he looks solid and powerful, and other times he reminds me of a shaky Takamisakari, I like him though so I hope his next tournament goes better for him.

Happy Birthday!

Does a kachi-koshi guarantee a wrestler will at least retain his ranking, or is it possible to get your eight wins and still drop downwards at the next basho?
-
As I watched this basho, I began (unfairly i guess), by comparing contemporary rikishi, to my memories of Harumafuji, Hakuho, Kakuryu, Kotoshogiku, Goeido, even Kisenosato, tbh in an unfavourable light. My early conclusion was that on average the wrestlers weren't as impressive as 10 years ago, but i also found that these wrestlers are actually very interesting and I began to change opinion when i started reading a little into their backgrounds, like Hoshoryu being related to Asashoryu, and Oho being related to the legendary Taiho, and so on. There seems to be many good wrestlers that can match each other, and there's no Hakuho to ruin everyone's day, as a result the outcome is more exciting. Even Onosato who has had a dominant basho was spectacularly defeated today. It's not over yet but I can safely say I've had a lot of fun, I just had to adjust the way I was viewing Sumo.

That was a bit uncharitable of Kinbozan wasn't it? Henka and an earslap, blimey.

NASA Describes Two Black Holes As Sumo Wrestlers...
Bugman Re-Hatched replied to Gaijingai's topic in Off-topic
For the life of me I cannot understand how time can be slowed down by gravity, yet apparently that's what happens the closer you get to a black hole. They are such mind-bogglingly mysterious things, terrifying too, but then I find space itself as frightening as it is beautiful. William shatner said when he went up into orbit, that instead of seeing the stars he was expecting, he saw the sinister void above him, lifeless, freezing, and it made him appreciate our wonderful home Earth more than ever. -
Thank you Morty that's very kind, it's wonderful to feel the basho excitement once again :)

Happy Birthday! :)

This is the first basho I've kept daily tabs on in a while so of course, I'm being hasty if I say I haven't found Hoshoryu to be impressive, but so far he seems kind of mediocre.

'The question is, how much more black could this be, and the answer is.....none......none' That film is honestly, one of the funniest ever. But now you've got me thinking of the fast shows 'black', but only Brits will know that one, it's about a guy that goes mad whenever he hears the word. https://youtu.be/IIW9sL-Yf6Q?feature=shared

I think I've become more cowardly in my old age, because where I once thought the colour black looked cool, it now just reminds me of grim stuff, and don't even mention skulls! My favourite mawashi was one i saw many years ago, it was a cute little whale that was surfacing and blowing its spout, though to my shame I forgot the name of the rikishi that owned it. Edit: Toyonoshima! It just 'resurfaced'

Guys who is 'future yokuzona material' out of the current makuuchi, is kotozakura one of those?
-
I was watching the natto youtube channel, and people do seem quite incredulous about kotozakura's win in the comments. To me it definitely looked like he touched the outside first. I guess it wouldn't be Sumo without a bit of controversy hehe.

Video: How the Dohyo Is Built With Hiro Morita
Bugman Re-Hatched replied to Gaijingai's topic in Japan-Japanese Discussions
The roof hanging over the dohyo was the first thing that caught my eye for some reason, on my initial exposure to sumo. It was in the 1990s, when channel 4 in the UK would show highlights of Chiyonofuji and company, and my father and I would sit and watch without really knowing much, but enjoying the atmosphere. I remember looking at it, the exotic detail, the heavenly lights emanating downwards and a strange cosy, protective feel it gave to the clay floor underneath. There's no sport as mysterious as Sumo I feel, fascinating video! thanks a lot.- 1 reply

I eh...hesitate to ask what a sagari might be. Is it a key-ring?
-
I'd love to vote properly, but I've been away so long I barely know any of the current rikishi, hopefully I'll know enough to try in earnest next time. Just for fun I'll choose the colour of the giant macaron, (whatever that may be), I'll go with yellow :)

Training pics&news overview Aki 2024
Bugman Re-Hatched replied to Akinomaki's topic in Ozumo Discussions
I just watched the newest video from the Chris Sumo youtube channel, and it reckons it's a 99% chance he is out for September -
I can't say the designs were my cup of tea, but then I'm willing to bet fashion is not an easy endeavour either. The atmosphere of the show seemed pretty cool though, I can see why people would want to spend a fun evening at an event like this.

If you see me posting and recognise the name, yes it's the same Bugman I did some catastrophe or other when trying to change the email linked to my account, (for some reason no validation email was received by me at the new one, despite multiple resends) and I was locked out. No harm done though, because I've been away so long I may as well be new :D And also this new name has an energetic, Hollywood-style ring to it. Hopefully I can choose a profile pic soon, as the option to do so doesn't currently seem to be available.

Lol thanks very much :D For sure in the haiku thread, and hopefully in some others too, as I'm planning to re-familiarise myself once more with current sumo. I've got lots to learn.
