Getting tired of the false starts.

Recommended Posts

Seems to come up every basho, but IMO, this basho seems worse as far as these dang mattas, and guys going forward without mattas being called.

Hakuho doesnt even try to put one of his fists down lately.

And today's bout with homasho i thought was one of the most clear mattas in a while that wasnt called.

I only recently got back into sumo, but when i used to be into it in the 90's i didnt remember such terrible starts. Granted, im not saying we should go to the amasumo rules of everyones fists down, and then refereree calls hakkeyoi to start, but still, I dont like guys getting advantages in bouts when they false start without it being called.

not really ....

not even close to being the worse basho matta-wise.

when you get to see Hokutoriki fight without a matta before it is surely a good basho. I bet Kyokai's scolding had some effect ....

Well thats pretty sad if this isnt even that bad of a basho for the false starts. and especially non called mattas.

Yeah, i too am pleased when i dont see hokutoriki's tachiai games. Ill never forget where he totally tricked kokkai last year with his matta games.

by the way, what i meant was, not the mattas that were called, but im getting tired of the mattas that arent called. Right now, another one, in the kotomitsuki bout. And then there was that one a couple days ago with tokitenku was it?

Granted, as has been mentioned, its up to the rikishi to go all out no matter what until they hear "matta", but i dont understand why more mattas ARENT being called.

even though Mickey didn't touch both hands down i thing they went at the same time so no "matta" needed there.

Same went for Tokitenku against Taikai. He just lost it after Taikai's hit ...

anyway, i have no problem with not touching both hands down as long as they start together (and in those 2 occasions i thing they did).

i could go to the extreme and say that i prefer the old system when the rikishi practically didn't even swat down but started from semi-upright position. More strategy, less injuries and longer fights ....

in this context i want to tell you about an article in sfm about the rising numbers of matta and henka....very interesting, i think

I might be starting to lean toward the old system. As mentioned there have been some pretty bad bouts this basho where it looked like one rikishi started before the other and those matches weren't very good.

I would love to see some of the guys start from a semi-upright position. Wouldn't that also cut down on henka?

Offtopic:

Actually I like Hokutoriki too.

Since we already have the Asashoryu Fan Mile, the Pro Miyabiyama Movement and the Baruto Fraction, it is NOW time for a Hokutoriki Gang!

I'm starting to agree with you on this one. At the beginning of the thread I was cautious because quite a few people have been crying Missed Matta, notably on the Chiyo v Tenku bout among others. I've been convinced that most of these were not matta, but I'll admit that some were entering into a mighty fine gray area. Now Kakizoe has seriously crossed the line with a clear Missed Matta versus Homasho. I haven't been following via video for very long, so I am very curious: Has Kakizoe been getting away with this kind of thing consistently throughout his whole career? Don't get me wrong, I tend to like Zoe and when he's in good form I often admire his speed at the tachiai. But this time he launched himself at the very moment Homasho's fist started going down to the clay. It almost looked premeditated. (Sign of disapproval)

I'm kinda in the same boat...didn't really consider it a big problem until Day 5. That Kakizoe bout was just off the charts bad, and Tamakasuga-Kotomitsuki didn't look very synchronized either...as far as I can tell from Dale's cap, Tamakasuga never put down his left hand, and in fact didn't even seem to be moving it at all (certainly not downward, which could have been interpreted as intent to start the bout) when Kotomitsuki stormed forward. Sure didn't look to me like Tamakasuga meant to go forward with the bout at that moment already.

But then, I've always thought that more matta being called isn't a problem except for the live audience, but it's always seemed that most fans want to see fewer calls. Well, got your wish. B-)

Exactly, but then again, if Kotomitsuki had waited for him to move, Kyushu Basho probably needed to be rescheduled. You can almost read Mickey's mind in the vidcap: "What the $&*# is he waiting for? Ok, that's it, I'm going off now!"
