wanchanyama Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 Well, I k now I'm back in Japan. Using the pay internet in the hotel lobby and the computer shuts off halfway through my first version of this post. Staff said that it would be back on at 6 am. Anyway, got to hotel post 10pm, have seen a couple of Italians and Fins so far. Sure more around and more to arrive over the next couple of days. Looking like a training session or two for the next few mornings. Not much info up on the boards yet apart from a training sheet and the Friday to Sunday schedule. Wondering how many people from the list are attending, I know Jonhofuji, Sasanishiki, Petr and a reporter or two from SFM, but is there anyone else coming this year? Looking forward to Friday night's welcome dinner.

I was supposed to go as part of our first-ever delegation, but life intervened. We'll be there with a few athletes and the chairman, Eldad, arriving Saturday I think.Say hello for me..
Sasanishiki Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 Looking forward to Friday night's welcome dinner. Isn't the welcome on Saturday night...I hope so, or we'll probably miss out on things. NZ is flying in on Friday night. I'll need a few beers after all the meetings that day! Good luck getting any food though. Smorgasbord and sumo athletes do not go well - and that is just all the skinny Eastern European athletes!! Speaking of which, looking forward to seeing Petr again.
wanchanyama Posted October 11, 2006 Author Posted October 11, 2006 my mistake, saturday night 19.00 to 20.00. Looking forward to Friday night's welcome dinner. Looking forward to see the food and Sasa. That reminds me I got invited to the Irish embassy last night for a dinner last night. Too late. Moreover, I should have replied if I take part until the day before yesterday. The Irish way. Also hoping that Irish representative, who couldn't make to any of our meetings will make it to Osaka. To mis-quote the classic: "Dread to think what the Irish will do to us tomorrow."
ilovesumo Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 I would love to go there, but...I would need a cost overview...I mean...am a student, you know (In a state of confusion...)
Kintamayama Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 (edited) The Irish way indeed. Sorry about that. Very enjoyable night by all accounts. We just finished a training session one hour ago. Heads were not too bad as they broke the stereotype and stayed off the batter last night. The team will be heading down to Osaka tomorrow morning (training at 2pm on Friday right?) and I'll follow along afterwards. Sasanishiki Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 With all the fun we're going to have in Osaka, we should do it all again in Tokyo before I leave! Anyone up for a beer from Mon 23rd until Wed 25th? That includes any SF members floating around in the metropolis. It's nice to put a face to the online name. I leave on the Thursday night.
wanchanyama Posted October 12, 2006 Author Posted October 12, 2006 I should be in Tokyo by the 25th, so I'm up for it too. Anyone up for a beer from Mon 23rd until Wed 25th? Count me in. (In a state of confusion...)
Petr Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 What about a keiko on Monday or Wednesday in Komaba? Nishi, which train do they take tomorrow? I might join them.
ilovesumo Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 (edited) Beer? Here ! (In a state of confusion...) Edited October 12, 2006 by ilovesumo
Petr Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 Nishi, which train do they take tomorrow? I might join them. I left them around 4pm today when they were heading to Nichidai. They still hadn`t decided at that stage (In a state of confusion...) . Cliched paddies. Never do anything till the last possible moment. feck them then (correct usage?)
wanchanyama Posted October 14, 2006 Author Posted October 14, 2006 Colin Carroll is our only entrant this year. He is in the lightweight division and unluckily he just got drawn against Vitaliy Tihenko, the reigning world champion from Ukraine. that's pretty much bad luck, the guy has won the last 2 world championships and the world games too last year, where he picked me up y the leg and power slapped my into the dohyo. felt like i had sun burn on my middle upper back, but was just gravel rash.
ilovesumo Posted October 14, 2006 Posted October 14, 2006 Just let me say GO Jonofuji and I would like to see a few pictures of Fernanda and the people of the Brazilian team. Very nice people :-D
yamaneko Posted October 15, 2006 Posted October 15, 2006 How did the US team do? Trent sabo -lightweight troy collins middleweight, Kelly gnieting - heavyweight, Rene marte, openweight
yamaneko Posted October 15, 2006 Posted October 15, 2006 oh yeah, and did byambaa from mongolia (ex makushita daishochi) win openweight or heavyweight? He was my favorite going in.
Odoriou Posted October 15, 2006 Posted October 15, 2006 Yahoo News has a few photos of the participants... (Holiday feeling...) The entire Irish team: The buttocks of a certain forum member:

Kintamayama Posted October 15, 2006 Posted October 15, 2006 (edited) Big upset in the team games-Japan loses to Russia 1-2, and can't make it 6 straight yushos. Russians get their first yusho. No details, but the guys there will probably fill us all in. Japan won the lightweight and middleweight (Shimoda for the third straight time) individual titles, but heavyweight Mori and openweight Ichihara both lost their semi-final matches to Russian opponents. Kintamayama Posted October 15, 2006 Posted October 15, 2006 (edited) Next year , the World Championships and Junior championships will be held in November 2007 in Lausanne, Switzerland. In 2008, it will be held in Estonia. Edited October 15, 2006 by Kintamayama
Kintamayama Posted October 15, 2006 Posted October 15, 2006 In the women's individual tournament, none of the four Japanese entrants got past the second stage, a first. In the team tournament, they came in 3rd by beating Holland.
sekihiryu Posted October 15, 2006 Posted October 15, 2006 (edited) just got back! what a long day, took a stack of photos for SFM and saw some excellent Sumo. A Mongolian Ulambayar Byambajav defeated Alan Karaev in the Heavyweight final. Russian Alan Gabareav beat Jaroslav Poriz aka Shiroikuma in the Open final. Jaroslav wasnt in good shape at the end, in one bout he planted head first on the dohyo and cut open his bald head and he was also carrying a leg injury. Katsuo Yoshida won the middleweights. Takaharu Nagasawa was extremely impressive in clinching the lightweight mens Irishman Colin Carrol head down charged straight (and was guided) out of the ring twice! Russia beat Ukraine in the womans team event Aline Boykova of Ukraine one the lightweight womans. Svetlana Pantaleeva of Russia beat Hanah Weerkamp of the Netherlands in the middleweights. Olesya Kovalenko of Russia won the Heavyweights Anna Zhigalova of Russia won the Open womans beating Britains Adele Jones. Russia 6 Golds Japan 2 Ukraine 1 Mongolia 1 Um what else? in the days ridiculous bout 210kg superheavyweight Dezso Libor of Hungary was up against a 80kg soaking wet Indian chap - it looked comical to say the least. One of the Poles destroyed his knee and was stretchered away - not a good sight. An old man collapsed. Roho came to hang out with his buddy Alan K and was naturally mobbed by fans seeking a photo. Lots of controversy behind the scenes by all accounts but thats another story....... Edited October 15, 2006 by sekihiryu

nipponnate Posted October 15, 2006 Posted October 15, 2006 Not to sound ignorant, but is it a little cold in Osaka for outdoor tournaments? (Holiday feeling...)
