Nishikido's hair

Recommended Posts

Well, thanks to Kaikitsune-zeki, I found out that ex-Mitoizumi, current Nishikido-oyakata, is bald. I thought he simply decided to change his look. But one of my sumo-friends put a bug in my ear mentioning she saw him in the report about his new heya, wearing what looks like a wig.

Now, why would a man who decided to shave his head wear a wig? Perhaps it was no decision of his, but sudden loss of hair... caused by illness perhaps?  (But, but...)

Now I'm worried... if anyone knows/hears anything about it, please enlighten me. Thanks!

As he opened a new heya, I don't think that Nishikido Oyakata is ill.

In fact, opening the new heya (and without an okamisan to help him out) was the reason for his hair-loss: stress caused baldness. (Note...)

Edit: Nope, seems it wasn't stress induced, but a imune-system illness that causes it to attack the hair roots...

First of all, let's hope Nishikido Oyakata is not sick.  If he is, then hopefully he has a quick, easy, and full recovery.

Perhaps it is just natural hair loss with age?  It happens earlier to some people.  And it is just as natural to want to cover it with wigs etc.

an okamisan

What is an okamisan?

Okamisan is the stable masters wife, and her importance in running a stable, especially when it's a small one with just a few rikishi, can't be overrated

Thank you for the information.  Even though that's not the purpose for this thread, I'm curious: what is the purpose of the okamisan in running the heya?

Alopecia areata is a a benign disease though without other major symptoms than the hair loss. It seems to be quite common actually. Prevalence is about 0.1-0.2% of population in US and according to eMedicine article the prevalence is quite standard all over the world. So in Japan there are probably at least over 100 000 suffering from this disease. For the interested (are there any really? :-P

I guess except for the actual coaching okamisan pretty much runs the show. :-P

She organizes the daily routines of the heya, acts as a surrogate mother for the homesick new deshi, knows where every this and that is held etc.

Well, I guess we could ask ourselves a question. Imagine up to thirty men to have a common household without a woman there to organize it and you end up with something reminiscent of my apartment. (Looks around...)

Very scary prospect  :-P

Although for the record, in my apartment my girlfriend is the one causing the mess and I'm more organized  :-Q

Are rikishi allowed to have girlfriends?  If so, do they live near the heya, or how does it work?

"Be civil to all, sociable to many, familiar with few, friend to one, enemy to none." - Benjamin Franklin

Very nice quote from the signature of Kotoseiya Yuichi.

Do the oyakata and okamisan play a role in *finding* girlfriends for the rikishi?  Or do they stay out of that?

About what percentage of active rikishi are married?  It's so rare to see pictures of them with girlfriends / wives / kids.

Bachelors:

Aogiyama, Kotoryu, Musoyama maybe?

Did 'Nami get married?

Wakanosato and Takanowaka, I don't remember hearing about their marriage (they're still young, though).

The choice of girlfriends (as future wives) is more important to rikishi who are to inherit a heya, since their wives must then take the role of okamisan. That was the root of the problem for Taka, as well. As for others, I think they have a free choice...

Tochiazuma has that pro-wrestler fiancee, if I remember correctly...  :-0

don't think Toki or Tochiazuma is married either, but I might be mistaken of course

Toki is married too. His wife said Toki is really nice and total opposite from his dohyo meanness. She also said she likes Toki's harite on the dohyo.

Kaio's wife used to be pro-wrestler, as well.

Wow -- I wouldn't want to get between them if they were fighting about something

Kaio's wife is slender and small woman though despite her pro wrestling background. I don't remember reading any reports on Azuma's wedding but I guess he did marry that big pro wrestler woman then!

Isn't Chiyotaikai single too and Kotomitsuki?

I don't remember any reports on Tochiazuma's wedding either. I said fiancee, not wife. :)

On the semi-related note (this is still Nishikido thread, right?), does Nishikido-beya have a tokoyama (hairdresser) of their own, or do they have to borrow one from a firendly heya? Same question goes for other small (less than 6 rikishi, say) heya...

Thanks!

Of course I could have done a bit of web-searching by myself... (Blush...)

As you can see (hopefully) there is no Tokoyama from Nishikido-beya, so they have to rely on Tokoyama from friendly heya as you said.

Well, the fact they don't have an in-house tokoyama is no hair off Nishikido's head, as they say in Detroit.

Anyhow, I gather the Oyakata at least has no need for one.

And yes,I am bald. So?
