On wednesday whilst doing my work as a window cleaner I was climbing down my ladders when they slipped and me and my ladders fell to the ground, luckily for me I was only a few feet off the ground, unluckily for me I smashed my face on one of the metal rungs as we hit the ground splitting my top lip open so badly that when I attended hospital the doctor mentioned possible surgery as it was I had 3 stitches inserted on the underside and 2 large butterfly stitches on the top part of my lip.

Its not the worst accident I've had but it hurt like hell I can tell you.

Whats the worst accident you have ever had at work?

The D string on my bass guitar snapped in the middle of "Proud Mary" in front of a plethora of people.

similar one for my father 20 years ago - painter and decorator. Atop a double (extension ladder) footed by a special contraption I cannot name. It slipped out with the head sliding down the wall. Both his arms caught beneath the rungs as he hit the floor. Both (fore)arms / wrists were broken and a bucket of black paint landed on his head. Took a long time with the turps did that paint.

Personally, besides vehicular (raod) accidents, mine would likely be a forced landing in a smoke filled plane when the smoke (more of a mix) was actually LOX - liquid oxygen. One spark and boom! No plane. In Southampton airport about 91/92. Lots of fire engines and ambulances waiting and we even had to pay!!! for a cup of tea.

Alternatively another plane still taking off (about 1000-2000m up) and the back door opened (the ramp door on a C-130) That was chilly but it was August so not so bad. Circled and landed, fixed the door and headed off again.

Then again, same plane a day later - over the Atlantic between Iceland and Canada (Goose Bay) and being told to keep an eye on the 'black ribbon' trailing back from a starboard propellor and letting the captain know if it increased in width. Being oil and not really a 'ribbon' it would have mean losing one of the engines not far from where Titanic met the iceberg. HArdet part was scraping the ice off the inside of the window to see out. C-130s not double glazed like your average 747.

These 2 were shot down ahead of my own (not piloted) helicopter on the way into N. Iraq: On 14 April 1994, two United States Air Force F-15 Eagle fighters on a Provide Comfort patrol mistakenly downed two United States Army Blackhawk helicopters carrying twenty-six Allied personnel, killing all aboard. - more here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Provide_Comfort

(FWIW - this text is erroneous in claiming 26 as 39 died that day - pilots of F-15s just slapped on the wrists)

the list goes on but as all are more like near misses, guess I can say - no major probs although I flew over my bike handlebars in Japan about 7/8 years ago on th e way home from work. Scraped my knee / hand etc!

This one happened during my time I had to do a little project in Nepal. Cause there are no roads in this part of the world, you have to carry everything by yourself, by porters or by donkeys and yaks.

On our way to a little village near Namche Bazaar suddenly our sherpa shouted out loudly "attention, aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah" and there was a caravan of yaks stamping down the mountain - a bit out of control. Everyone tried to jump to the safe site of the small path - well, everyone but me, as I was dreaming - as always. So I got a kick from one yaks ass and tumbled down the slope. Nothing really dramatic happened besides some black and blue marks and some pain in the back. The worst was, I had to climb up all the way again. (Holiday feeling...)

Nowadays I'm only stumbling out of the metro on my way to work and break my thumb. Not so exciting ...

More accidents happened to me at work, but this is the most stupid one ever.

I was working in an elementary school. I entered the classroom of one of my collegues with a pile of papers in my hands. It was after school and my collegue was talking to another collegue. My vision was blocked by the papers, so I did not see the garbage can... I stumbled and fell right on top of it.

I was not really hurt, but the garbage can was bent because of my weight. My colleagues were laughing and silly jokes were made for weeks.

My worst accident was working in a clothing warehouse. We were putting boxes in the trash compactor, and pushing them down with big metal pipes. I jammed the pipe in, it bounced weirdly off of a box, and the jagged back end of it bounced back at me, catching me in the head. I saw stars and had my bell rung, but it didn't hurt all that much. Then my co-worker friend turned pale and said "You've got to go to the doctors!" I put my hand up to my head and it came back bloody. Then the blood started running into my eye, so I bent my head over and cupped my hand under where the drip was. By the time I got to the bathroom, I had a hand full of blood, and was starting to panic a little. It still didn't hurt, until I started to wash it out as best I could. In the mirror, I saw a 4 inch(10cm) bump from my eyebrow to my hairline, and a 2 inch(5cm) or so gash that was about half an inch wide. I put a bunch of paper towels on it, and got a ride to the hospital. Luckily for me, the attending physician on the emergency room was a plastic surgeon, and was able to sew me up good. I think it was 30something stitches, but she put them really close together so I wouldn't scar. The spray she used to freeze the cut was what hurt the most, I can still remember that searing pain. The scariest part of the whole thing is that I didn't notice, but the pipe had grazed the inside of my nose, less than 1/4"(1cm) from my eye. I had been less than an inch away from losing an eye. (Holiday feeling...)

I did a very similar thing (only once) with a utility blade, trying to build a model out of birch plywood at 2:00 AM when the school's woodshop was closed. Ahhhh, all-nighters in Architecture School. Memories. The best thing about that injury, despite being a cut through my nail to the bone; it was so bad that: A. They gave me really hard stuff at the hospital. Since I don't do painkillers under virtually any circumstance, I found someone who would do them under any circumstance and paid me for the pills. It was easy at an art school. B. My professor forbade me from making any models for the duration of the semester! C. It was on the middle finger, which gave me many excuses to flick people off. Was I really that immature in college? Yes.

Ahhhhh the old woodworking accidents never fail to hurt like hell.

When I was at school I was sawing a piece of wood lengthways in a vice when the teacher told us to stop working for a moment, momentarily drawing my eyes away from the position of my hand so when told to carry on I sawed my thumb lengthways-OUCH!!!!!

My worst accidents came when I was a kid - mostly falling down. The most memorable one certainly was missing a step when walking on stony Dalmatian coast, and having my left leg drop in a crevice between two rocks. I had an open gash on a side of my leg, bleeding freely (we closed the gash with wet swimming suit), but it didn't hurt at all. I never went to a doctor to saw it up, so I have a nice scar to show off. (Neener, neener...)

No memorable accidents at work (yet). Mostly happened to other people...

During chemistry laboratory course we once accidentally set the fire blanket on fire. (talking 'bout efficient fire protection) The only thing hurting though were our midriffs from laughing...

I haven't had any real accidents at work yet. I currently work with meat, so there are alot of knives and stuff like that around. One of my collegues actually got her fingers stuck and almost cut off in a machine just this saturday. Luckily the cut wasnt very deep so it was no problem. Another guy at work did the very same thing a few weeks ago and that time it went about halfway through the fingers.

So I'm pretty careful... Especially with my fingers since I play the guitar alot.

If we're talking about lucky escapes----

I was on a roof cleaning a window when I slipped and began sliding down the roof, reaching the end of the roof my feet connected with my ladder and knocked it untill it finished up leant against the wall opposite I then slid off the roof (Showing respect...) only to finish up standing back on my ladder again.

The only time I have ever been seriously hurt is once when I was a wildland firefighter in 1999. I picked up a log, and was going to throw it to the side, and i twisted improperly and destroyed 2 discs in my back. I was airlifted out to the fire on a backboard. How embarrassing.

Come to think of it, I wasn't such a great firefighter anyway. Kind of accident prone. I cut my foot with a pulaski one time, too. I now have a 4inch long scar on the inside of my foot.

I had my hand run over by a bombardier. Broke several bones, but didn't miss any work. Yep, definitely better for me not to be a firefighter anymore.

I have never been hurt as an artist, even though I have many heavy and sharp things to hurt myself with around everyday.

Would I have been killed or just seriously injured? I have the rest of my life to wonder about that. Of course that wasn't an accident as such (to me, that is) so I guess I need to pass this one unless hitting one's toe into a table leg counts.

Something similarish happened this summer on Croatian roads. Truck (the big one, with a trailer) driving 80-90 km/h drove into a tunnel never noticing that the vehicles inside had stopped. It crushed a small car into another big truck. All inside the car were killed immediately. Speeding truck driver got away with middling injuries and lengthy jail penalty (hopefully). Front truck driver got away uninjured.

Well it's a toss-up between two. One a stupid mistake and the other a stroke of bad luck.

1) While mowing weeds in preparation for a large load of wood to be split for the winter, I managed to insert my large toe into the moving blade...only lost the flesh off the end of the toe, but it was stupidity at its finest.

2) While conducting an airborne operation in Washington (state) in the mid-90's, I found myself and the rest of my group well off the drop zone. We all aimed back toward the drop zone and I managed to clear the tall trees by inches. I lowered my ruck sack which promptly landed in a large bush and lodged there. As I was still moving laterally at a good clip and being attached to the ruck sack by a lowering line, I became tethered to the bush as well. The result was, that instead of landing on the balls of my feet and performing a parachute landing fall, I landed more or less flat on my side. Broke a couple ribs and bruised myself up pretty good. I'm still at it a decade and more later so I guess THAT might be classified as stupidity by some (Showing respect...)

Since no one asked I will tell you anyway.... (Showing respect...)

The worst accidents I had at work happened within a couple of years of each other.

First I overreached trying to clean the top of a window and on reflex I stepped off my ladder 15 feet from the ground,I landed on my feet but my right leg gave way and I knew I had broken something so I borrowed a pair of crutches and made my way to hospital where a xray discovered I had cracked my heel bone-4 weeks in plaster and the very next day I returned to work.

Two years later cleaning another window my ladders slipped from under me and again I managed to land on my feet, this time though I was in agony and the householder had to call an ambulance, there was no way I was getting to the hospital on my own this time.

Apparently the earlier fall had weakened the bone and when I fell this time I shattered my heel into pieces, the doctor said if he couldn't fix it I would never get up a ladder again as it was it took 2 steel plates and 7 screws to fix.

It was months before I dared go up a ladder again and even longer before I stopped having a falling feeling when I did.

Well it didn't really hurt...but it sucked. I am a server, and I was heading back to the kitchen with a full tray of dirty dishes, and when I go to kick the swinging door open(when I kick the door I really kick the door...mostly for fun) and when i did this, I was balancing a very heavy try, and only standing on one leg...well the mat that was on the floor slid when I kicked the door...so there I go falling on my ass...only broke a few things on the tray...but enough people in the bar saw me that sucked. Then at my last job I had 3 boxes of potatoes stacked on top of each other, so in all about 150 pounds...not to bad, but the only thing is, that I am 5 foot 6 inches...so I can't really see to well, and I trip on a ledge, and go chest first into the boxes...alittle brusing, but nothing major.
