Jonosuke 28 Posted March 13, 2007 Takamisakari (1-2) over Tamakasuga by hikiotoshi, 4.3 seconds -------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Finally getting his first win this basho) "Ah...now I am sure I won't have all loss basho. Last night I had a feeling I'd start thinking all kinds of bad things that could happen so I went to bed early. With this win I think I can sleep better tonight." Dejima (3-0) over Kasuganishiki by oshidashi, 4.4 seconds ------------------------------------------------------------------- (Told he looked like he was in great condition) "I was told the same thing last basho after I got a kinboshi (by beating Asashoryu). Then things went downhill from there like no tomorrow." Kotoshogiku (0-3) losing to Toyonoshima by oshidashi, 7.2 seconds ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Losing to his rival and suffering his third loss) "I can't stand it. I can't get a decent sumo in. But at least I had the best tachiai out of the last three days. And I think for me right now, that is something." Toyonoshima (3-0) over Kotoshogiku ------------------------------------------- (Beating hims sumo rival since Junior High and High School days back in Kochi Prefecture) "He is my best buddy and rival in Ozumo. Sure when he got promoted to sanyaku, I told him, 'Congratulation' but inside me, I was screaming I couldn't stand it." "I felt bad when we got into a yotsu but it turned out well. I tried to remain calm from the beginning. I avoided staring him and not getting myself carried away in his pace." "I think if I can win at this rank, it means I am in a great physical condition." (On meeting Asashoryu tomorrow) "When I faced him at a tournament right after the Hatsu basho, I was so terrified. All I can say is I will do my best." Kotomitsuki (3-0) over Asasekiryu by yorikiri, 20.8 seconds ------------------------------------------------------------------- (Handily beating Asasekiryu) "I was able to get right in and so I kept going after him. I stayed ahead of him and was able to keep the flow. It's still early but I hope I can keep going like this." Miyabiyama (1-2) losing to Hakuho by oshidashi, 6.9 seconds ---------------------------------------------------------------------- (Losing easily after a mono-ii) "Look, he is only 22 years old and I am 29. You need to consider the age difference. The first one may have been just a warm-up for him but for me, I barely managed to get out alive. I couldn't get my breath back in time." Hakuho (2-1) over Miyabiyama ------------------------------------ "I thought I won the first bout but then if I rolled along with him, I can't really complain, right?" "I am moving well and I am seeing my opponent well. So I think things are going well so far." Chiyotaikai (2-1) over Kasugao by oshidashi, 3.7 seconds ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Winning by speed sumo) "The first encounter is always stressful. Recently Kasugao is turning out to be really stickler. I am glad that I was able to win." Tochiazuma (3-0) over Ama by yoritaoshi, 43.1 seconds ----------------------------------------------------------------- "About half-way I floated up and I couldn't move anymore. He got me in a firm yotsu position but I remained patient. I also think I am moving as well as I could hope for." (Falling off the dohyo together with Ama and injuring his left toe and heel) "Yeah I banged it up good. When you saw how badly I fell, you will know I am hoping it won't affect my sumo the rest of this basho. But at least, my knee is holding up well so far." Ama (1-2) losing to Tochiazuma -------------------------------------- "If you start with a bad tachiai, it really does not amount much regardless of how hard you worked after. I never felt he was suffering from knee injury. He was really powerful." Kaio (1-2) losing to Tokitenku by oshidashi, 2.9 seconds ---------------------------------------------------------------- "My right foot slipped. I am not generating enough power from my right leg. Not that I am really concerned or anything. I can go out with enough intensity but my right leg is not moving at all." Tokitenku (2-1) over Kaio ---------------------------------- "I was thinking of getting to his side after hitting him hard but I was pleased that we got into a tsuppari exchanging bout. That's the reason I got the win. I think the ozeki's leg slipped. I haven't done anything at all really." "You've seen how my heya mate (Toyonoshima) is doing, right? I can't afford to relax at all." "But I think this was just a lucky win. I want to display a powerful tsuppari sumo like Chiyotaikai-zeki." Kotooshu (2-1) over Takekaze by hatakikomi, 2.4 seconds -------------------------------------------------------------------- (Empathizing his heya mate Kotoshogiku's plight) "There are times like this. If you can go out all six bashos with all vigor, that will be amazing." Futeno (0-3) losing to Asashoryu by yorikiri, 4.0 seconds ------------------------------------------------------------------ (No match for Asashoryu's blazing sumo today) "It wasn't so much of me jumping out late. He was razor sharp and swift. I came in with more intensity but his sumo was nothing less than perfection today." Asashoryu (1-2) over Futeno --------------------------------- (Even in winning, hardly displaying his normal bravado suffering from a cold and acknowledged he received an IV shot last night) "I focused solely on tachiai. I moved well from the tachiai. With this win, all bad airs have been cleared up. I should have started the basho with a sumo like today's" "I am so happy that I was able to win today. I had a few drinks last night hoping to turn the fortune around." "Today I was able to go with my flow. Before I was letting my opponent controlled the flow." Kitanoumi oyakata, chairman of the Kyokai ------------------------------------------------- "I am sure he is relieved somewhat but until he has more wins than losses, he will experience more pressure. The question is how he will respond when he cannot get the mawashi. We all know tomorrow's Toyonoshima is doing well." Record: Iwakiyama - Career 500th appearance Magaki oyakata (former yokozuna Wakanohana II) has been hospitalized after undergoing a brain surgery at an Osaka area hospital on March 13. He started feeling ill and collapsed around lunch time at the Osaka City Gymnasium where the Haru Basho is currently being held and he was taken to the hospital by ambulance. The exact nature of his illness was not immediately disclosed but it's suspected that it was a cerebral hemorrhage. According to officials he is conscious but he cannot movet the left side of his body. "As we are talking about his head, we will ask him to take enough time to rest and recover fully before he comes back to work," Kitanoumi oyakata, chairman of the Kyokai commented. Magaki oyakata is the basho manager responsible for Haru basho but the Kyokai decided not to appoint his replacement at the moment.
Danjinoumi 9 Posted March 13, 2007 (edited) Tochiazuma (3-0) over Ama by yoritaoshi, 43.1 seconds ----------------------------------------------------------------- "About half-way I floated up and I couldn't move anymore. Glad to see it is Tochi's toe and heel, and not another knee. The way he got up so slowly and limped back to the dohyo, I think everyone was wondering if this was going to be it for him. The place definitely got pretty quiet when he didn't get up for a few minutes. BTW, Dejima looked strong again today. Like he says, tho, the basho is still young.
