Bealzbob 0 Posted March 30, 2007 I like this one. It's all about to kick off :) Or as it seems to translate "now or never".
aderechelsea 125 Posted March 30, 2007 if you are familiar with Makoto Kubota's book of sumo photos, then you must have recognised it (Shaking head...)
Sasanishiki 57 Posted April 3, 2007 OK, roughly translating the profile on that website, these pictures were drawn by an ex-rikishi, Kototsurugi Jun'ya. Hi real name is Tamiya Noboru and he was born July 6, 1960 in Fukuoka prefecture. He entered Sadogatake-beya as a 15 year old and made his hatsu dohyo in Haru basho, 1976. He'd always enjoyed drawing and while still an active rikishi he began to have his cartoons published in sports newspapers. He retired in 1986 at the Aki basho. In 1990 he made his debut again as a cartoonist. He had a number of works published in manga magazines through the 90s (which I can't be bothered translating), and has also had books of his own works published (as collections of the serialised works I think), including "Kototsurugi no Gottsan desu", "Osumosan" and "Kototsurugi's chanko dojo". He currently runs the chanko restaurant Kototsurugi in Funabashi (Chiba prefecture, not far from Ryogoku) while contributing sumo cartoons to Ozumo and Hochi Shimbun. He also instructs at the Chofu City wanpaku sumo (kids' sumo) club and hosts a radio show. He says "Without poking fun at it, I want to put across the tradition and culture of sumo, the conviction of the sport and the youthful spirit in my manga". Because he's had actual experience he is able to inject this into his work. or something like that, anyway
aderechelsea 125 Posted April 3, 2007 thank you !!!!! this was far more interesting than i expected. A rikishi and a cartoonist ... he would have been my favourite person if i ever met him ... ;-)
