Asashoryu's NFL capabilities

san diego chargers should give him a tryout and he would become the quickest, strongest interior defensive lineman in the NFL

That won't happen. Wakanohana III loved football his whole life and failed miserably in the football world (a la Akebono in K1). One of the medical types here can give you some physical reasons for why sumos can't play football, but the first obvious one is that the yokozuna is simply way too small.

yeah, but waka was older right and beat up? Asa has got decent size...perhaps not tall enough for linebacker, but has the girth and strength for a run stopping deffensive lineman. With his speed i imagine he could be a fullback as well. Not anyone could make the transition but asa is just an amazing athlete period..i think he could do it.

Maybe there should be an "Asa in NFL" thread created.

Anyway, I don't know much about football, but I assume the kind of speed necessary to play in the NFL has to extend beyond the width of the dohyo. I think he'd have to retrain extensively, build up stamina, and acquire a different kind of speed all together.

I think there are very few athletes who can just switch sport and be succesful and sports they can switch to is even fewer, Asa going to nfl and be succesful is the same as an nfl star would switch to sumo and be succesful (succesful=belong to the very best) . Frankly I think its an insult to fotball and thier sportsmen to say asashoryu could switch to nfl and be succesful.

I've heard that Wakanohana III had lateral movement issues...sumo at it's roots is all about head-on rock'em sock'em hitting...

Asashoryu is 184cms tall. Have linebackers suddenly jumped in size since I last watched American football?

Some linebackers are Asashoryu's height. Most are taller and weigh considerably less. Brian Urlacher of the Chicago Bears is considered as probably the best linebacker in professional football. He's 6'4" (193 cm) tall and he weighs about 260 pounds (117 kg).

Asashoryu is much heavier than any linebacker in the NFL. He would probably be considered to be a fairly short offensive or defensive lineman, not a linebacker.

I'm glad this discussion is hypothetical. Asashoryu has no experience in American football. It's too technical and he's too old to start learning now. His future is in sumo. At least, I hope it is.

I wouldn't say to small. He would have good size for a libebacker. Stamina though would take a LOT of training to develop. Plus American football is a very technical sport where anyone who plays at NFL level would need years of experience (unless they were a kicker). Language barrier is another problem.

Brock Lesnar was a phenominally strong, athletic wonder still in his late 20's when he quit pro wrestling to try out for the NFL. He impressed everyone with his work ethic. Yet when all was said and done, he had no chance of making the roster, as the years of college/pro experience the other contenders had was just too much to overcome.

Unless he has a hidden talent of being about to kick a football 80 yards, I don't see the NFL in Asashoryu's future.

Lateral movement issues, eh? Maybe Asanowaka missed his true calling! (I am not worthy...)

Asashoryu is much heavier than any linebacker in the NFL.

Naturally he would have to shed a lot of that weight.

If he did, the mobility he would gain would be more than offset by a large loss of strength. If anything, linebacker is a more technical position than that of interior lineman. If he had an ideal body for any position on an NFL team, Asashoryu still wouldn't make it. In addition to physical ability and talent, the experience of playing many years of American football is vital for success in the NFL. Having great fighting spirit and amazing sumo ability are not substitutes for that experience. Since Asashoryu is almost 27 years old and has absolutely no American football experience, he has no future in the the National Football League.

Sumo is his sport. As I said before, I hope he continues to remain in it.
