Asa in hot water-thread 2

Damn Asashoryu looks really depressed (Neener, neener...)

More Yukan Fuji sh*t-stirring. That's not a recent picture of Asasoryu leaving for Mongolia. Asa hasn't shaved in a while and has something of a goatee.

Houdou Station just had a 10 minute feature on Asashoryu. Tons of footage of him arriving at Narita airport, walking through Narita airport, sitting in his airplane seat while announcers give running commentary, arriving in Genghis Khan Airport, leaving in a four car caravan, and footage of one of the cars speeding around trying to lose the papparazzi in pursuit. Throughout it all, Asashoryu looked dazed, the same blank expression, apparently never once touching any of his food or drink. The cars supposedly split up, and it was unclear which was the one which had Asashoryu in it, so it looks like his escape was a success.

I certainly can't defend Asashoryu, but this media stalking was way, way over the top. And on the 10th anniversary of the papparazzi induced death of Princess Diana, no less. (Neener, neener...)

Didn't some Mongolian genius (or maybe he isn't Mongolian after all..) who knows it all say somewhat smugly that there are no paparazzi in Mongolia?

I saw a few video clips of him leaving today and I really think there is something definitel wrong with him. Sure he can walk and manage all motor actions but it's his eyes. He looked totally dazed - I am not sure from exhaustion or sleeping pills or whatever but he does not look like someone healthy.

I know some die-hard Asashoryu-haters but even they were beginning to feel sorry for him now. I think all Asashoryu bashing had its effect, getting more people to have sympathy for him.

How ironic is it that this thread started with Asashoryu in figurative hot water, and now sees him being treated in literal hot water?

Jew,

That genius is me. I did say there are no paparazzi types in Mongolia. And, it's true too. There isn't a good market for "sensational" photos established in Mongolia, yet. Maybe in future.(I was talking about paparazzi type hunting you see in Western countries. Alright, Jewish dude?).

Actually, my forum name is Coo-cook. I thought you know me...I read your post recently mentioning my name.

According to a Mongolian source, Asashoryu and his group of 20 will be heading to a campground located in an old capital city of Kharkhorin (Karakorum).

They have chartered a large chopper for a week to carry them and supplies over to a camp owned by Asashoryu. They are expected to stay around one week in the camp ground. Normally the campground is open to both domestic and international visitors but it has been temporary closed for all outsiders during their stay.

Kharkhorin is located about 400 km south-west of Ulaanbaator and near the city there are hotsprings where Asashoryu is expected to spend some of his rehabilitation time.

I just saw a TV documentation about Karakorum...it was sand and archaeologists shoveling old ovens out of it (big deal, cause the archaeologists found out that the city was left in a hurry)... Is that finished?

Takasago Oyakata staying in a Jurte. That must be an adventure for him. They should speak them out. No better place ever.

Asa has landed by now in Mongolia. He was seen by 250 reporters and 100 other passengers at Narita airport.

Narita Airport authorities were not fooling around today. To control over 250 reporters and media crew as well as over 100 people who wanted to see Asashoryu, the airport went into the most secure mode this year by deploying 29 guards just to escort Asashoryu and his group as well as positioning 40 uniformed police officers for crowd control. They also made available 10 media relations personnel for all the reporters and TV crews.

===========

During the flight to Mongolia, Asashoryu sat on the front left row in the business class section of the plane. Other passengers close by noted Asashoryu mostly slept without eating or drinking much while his shiso read newspapers.

There was a "bully" male attendant positioned at the curtain separating its Business class from Economy section and as a result no one from the Economy could peer into the Business section.

Just my own personal bit but being one of the denizens of cheap seats I hate those "bully" attendants too.

Alright. But you should call me Israeli, as Jew is a religion, and last time I checked, Mongolia was a country, not a religion. I never mentioned your religion.

In any case, I thought ILKh said that. I still don't believe there are no paparazzis in Mongolia.

And I really don't mind being called Jew either. If you think you offended me in any way, I apologize.

They are heading to small village of Khujirt which located 40km south west from Kharkhorin. So it is about 440 km from Ulaanbaatar. Dolgorsuren family and their children are "natives" of that village and surrounding area

The new 2nd assistant (edited for truth's sake..) to the Education and Sports minister Mr.Matsunami who just assumed office today severely criticized the NSK. "The NSK are not qualified to tell us what our traditional culture is!!", he said. He is a "long time acquaintance" of Asashouryuu. He is now the Cabinet Minister in charge of sports. Speaking of the NSK's way of handling this affair: "Since we were little, the idea that was cultivated was that the Japanese are different, and this notion is now missing. They turned a small scandal into a gigantic affair by administering a severe punishment, but they could have thought this out more carefully'' he added. "Sumo started off as part of a funeral ceremony (???)yet there was no sumo or dohyoiri at ex-Kotozakura's funeral!" he added. "I will have to look closely from now on to see if the NSK operates as we wish it to ", he summed.

As this sounds totally off the wall to me and the dog, can someone check my translation??

Maybe he's another one afflicted with "I had dinner with Asashoryu and all I got was this lousy t-shirt these confused thought processes" syndrome.

I believe his word will weigh far more than yours.

Apparently there is a possibility that he may never become "Asashoryu" again. Things have become so twisted partly because the yokozuna's stablemaster and the association failed to hold close and careful consultations with the yokozuna.

I understand that in the sumo world, a stablemaster is like a wrestler's real father.

Thanks for this Nishi san.

They can certainly come up with a catchy headline.

Thanks for the pointer to this as it's really surprising to see Kenshiro Matsunami as an Assistant Minister of Science and Education. Like Asashoryu, this guy is a lone wolf. He was a member of the now defunct Renewal party and then joined Conservative Party which went to belly up as well. Along with their head, former talent and actress Chikage Oogi joined the Jiminto Party (Liberal Democrats, Japan's governing party). His most famous (or infamous depending on your point of view) performance was during a question period in Japanese Diet, he threw a glass of water to a Democrats member.

He basically said "the Kyokai lacked an understanding that (unlike Japanese) Asashoryu was not nurtured in the Japanese way since he was little. The Kyokai applied for once and all one heavy penalty not only for this latest incident but also for all the other past problems. They should have given him a warning at each occurrance.

He went on to say how can the Kyokai be qualified to speak about traditions, history and culture when they themselves ignore that sumo actually started as a ritual for funeral cereomony but they have not even performed a dohyo-iri ceremony for the funeral of former yokozuna Kotozakura.

Matsunami warned the Ministry would be reviewing if the Kyokai has been actually operating according to the guidelines set by the Ministry of Education.

Matsunami is a nationalist and right of the conservative right. If anything, he would put more pressures to the Kyokai to respect the Japanese culutre and traditions. It won't bode well for those pushing for internationalization of sumo.

I might also add that Matsunami has a chon-mage hair style.

Some context for the headline. The term they used is "shinjuu" 心中. While Jonosuke wrote "murder-suicide", another way of saying it is "double suicide" or "lover's suicide", i.e., two people decide that they will go off to the next world together.

心中 can thus also mean you put your whole fate into one thing. An example from the dictionary would 仕事と心中する, with the idea that "As my job goes, so go I."

So, there's a lot layered meaning in the headline - Shisho/Deshi are putting their fate in this return to Mongolia. If it doesn't go well, they are finished. And also it references the lover's suicide angle; Takasago has taken full responsibility for what happens. If Asa decides to retire, so does Takasago. If Asashoryu screws this up, Takasago will be forced to resign, and he will likely submit intai papers for Asa as well.

Hananotaka is correct. The term for murder-suicide or a forced "shinju," where one lover kills his/her paramour and then commits suicide, is 無理心中 "muri shinju."

"Ikka Shinju" 一家心中 is the term used when a family dies together, either in a suicide pact or when parent(s) kill(s) the child(ren) before committing suicide. "Muri" can be thrown in as it applies.

In this case, Yukan Fuji is intimating that Takasago and Asashoryu are in a suicide mission together as they leave for Mongolia. Most of the media assume that the yokozuna would screw up and both he and his shisho would be "goners," as far as ozumo is concerned, before the end of the year.

Catchy headline, indeed. A bit mean-spirited, but catchy.

To be fair, he threw the water from the glass onto the Democrats member, not the glass itself.
