Peterao 3 Posted September 21, 2007 We just had a streak of seven consecutive yorikiri victories in Makunouchi. Can any of our glorious sumo tools tell us when was the last time this happened?
Doitsuyama 1,192 Posted September 21, 2007 Because you were asking so nicely I took a break in my work to do some simple SQL magic. The last day with seven consecutive bouts in makuuchi decided by the same kimarite was day 10 of Kyushu 1993. The last eight bout streak is a bit more dated with day 15 in Nagoya 1964. No longer streaks since 1927, only two older eight bout streaks. There has only been one streak with six consecutive makuuchi bouts with the same kimarite which was NOT yorikiri, rather recent, on day 9 in Haru 2006. Peterao 3 Posted September 21, 2007 Thanks for the lookup. Interesting that Kaio was involved in both of the recent streaks mentioned. Did your search include streaks broken up over two separate days?
nirumaruyama 0 Posted September 21, 2007 (edited) Has any rikishi gone a solid 15 days with just yorikiri wins or alternatively has any rikishi gone a full 15 days winning or losing by yorikiri alone? Edit: I know the first question implies a zensho yorikiri tournament. Edited September 21, 2007 by nirumaruyama
Peterao 3 Posted September 21, 2007 My gut feeling is that the closest to ever come to a 15 yorikiri zensho was the yokozuna Takanohana. More impressive to me would be a zensho with 15 different kimarite. I do remember a time when Kyokushuzan started a tournament with eight straight wins with eight different kimarite, but can't recall anyone putting together a longer consecutive different kimarite winning streak than that. Doitsuyama 1,192 Posted September 21, 2007 Did your search include streaks broken up over two separate days? No, and I don't see the sense. I'd rather look for streaks starting in juryo and continuing in makuuchi then that.

This one actually can be found with the search engine. Here is the solution, and Takanohana isn't even close to the leaders. As you can see Daijuyama and two times Kotokaze had the most yorikiri bouts in one basho with 13. You can also see in the "Record" column that Kotokaze and Kitanoumi had the most yorikiri wins in one basho with 12.
nirumaruyama 0 Posted September 21, 2007 Thanks Doitsuyama. That's an impressive search engine! 12 yorikiri wins in one basho!
Jakusotsu 6,049 Posted September 21, 2007 Here is the solution, and Takanohana isn't even close to the leaders. If you restrict the query to wins only, you'll see that Takanohana actually isn't that bad at all: he had four basho with 11 yorikiri wins, three with 10, and another six with 9 - amazing if you ask me! (...or boring if you ask someone else (Neener, neener...) )
