Day9

Recommended Posts

Toki continues to impress.

Kaio looks out of shape against Kyokutenho.

Chiyotaikai looks strong against Wakanosato but he has 2 losses.

Asashoryu has 0 losses and my guess is he will go 14-1.

Yeah, Kaio didnt seem to be in good shape at all. His right arm was pretty heavily taped up and it looked like he wasnt able to use it 100%

I really love Shoryu's sumo this basho. Such lightning fast moves and quick thinking. Todays bout against Iwakiyama was great. Iwakiyama had very good forward movement and it looked almost like he was gonna win, but then all of a sudden asashoryu was behind him instead of infront of him! Imagine his surprise! B-)

Zensho! Zensho! (Riding an ATV...)

I fear he might stop himself. Like he did last years kyushu and hatsu this year with losses to Tochinonada and Kaiho.

(I hope I didnt get the bashos mixed up (Riding an ATV...) )

Yeah thanks alot Kaio, out on day 9 in chaingang because I switched from Asa to Kaio-And the reason for that is the same as why I say no Zensho-

Asa has a two match lead now and I think hes gonna let off the pace a little,I forecast a loss in his next two matches-Maybe even on day 10 agaist Micky.

Why not a zesho-yusho for Asashoryu?Who will stop him?

Asashoryu looks like he's in the best shape he has ever been but I think he'll lose to either Chiyotaikai (probably him), Kaio (he'll improve) or Wakanosato. He can also lose to such as Kotomitsuki but I don't think he will.

Agreed, he won't make it to 15 - 0 although he looks very strong.

While Asashoryu is certainly more than capable of Zensho, with 6 days left against strong opponents, its quite possible that he will be upset at least once. Its not likely at all though that he won't get the yusho. 6 days left and a 2 win lead is going to be hard to overcome for his opponenets. May as well tack on #4 for Asa already, the Emperor's cup is basically already his again. Before the end of his career, he will have that zensho though. Toki is a surprise. It really is unfortunate that Kaio always seems to get an injury after he wins the yusho. But he will go down in history as the greatest Ozeki of all times. As people know that he is better than some past Yokozuna.

If you talk about greatest Ozeki in history and mention Kaio, let me guess that you haven't heard of Raiden yet. Asashoryu probably has to improve quite a bit to reach Raiden's level...

Ahh, I don't think so at this point. That's a very lofty claim and he has a lot of work to back it up -- why would you say he's the greatest ozeki?

I thought Kaio has won most Yushos for Ozeki who never got promoted (if he doesn't).

Edit: Ok, so Raiden has 28 unofficial Yusho.

I'm impressed, I agree. I thought he'd be 3-6 at best at this point, but he's 5-4 amazingly enough. Apparently he's better than I thought he is (Protesting...) Well done, I hope he keeps it up. I always like seeing unique styles.

Yes, unofficial of course, there wasn't a yusho system like now back then. But 28 is really great, considering that there were only 2 basho per year.

While Kaio may not be the greatest ozeki of all time, don't you think it's a bit unfair to compare him (or anyone) with Raiden...? :'-(

Edit: Ok, so Raiden has 28 unofficial Yusho.

Not to mention that his makuuchi winning percentile was 96... (Protesting...)

Wasn't Raiden from time before rank of yokozuna existed? (me clueless lazy bum as always) So we could describe Kaio as best Ozeki of Yokozuna-era. :'-(

If he never gets that tsuna. (Protesting...)

Edit: Added nose to :D. :-(

The yokozuna rank first appeared on the May 1890 banzuke. Raiden retired 1811, IIRC.

Actually no. But in those times the "Yokozuna license" was given from a family which stood in conflict with the guy Raiden was attached to. Of course he would have been a shoe-in for Yokozuna at any time, so it is really rather unfair to draw any comparison to any Ozeki.

Thank you for correcting me. (Protesting...) Indeed, yokozuna menkyo, or the right to nominate yokozuna dates back to 1789. Raiden began his sumo career in 1790, so under different circumstances he could've (read: should've) been nominated yokozuna.

OK, I wasn't thinking of Raiden. I should have said greatest Ozeki in modern time. Back in Raiden's day Sumo and the ranking system were totally different from what they are today. Were Raiden competeing under today's sumo system, he would surely be a Yokozuna. But the ranking and standards of that era were so different from todays, its like comparing apples to oranges. The reason I think Kaio is the best of modern times is that he has 4 yusho. Konishiki and Chiotaikai have 3, I think only those 2 correct me if I'm wrong (Though if Chiyo never gets promoted either, I could see him retireing with 5-7 moving past Kaio).

The name regularly forgotten in this context is that of ozeki Shimizugawa Motokichi of Hatachiyama- and later Takasago-beya, winner of Haru 1932, October 1932 & Natsu 1934.

Raiden was a freak for his day.Huuuugh!I understand. Wasn`t he barred from using tsuki so others stood a chance?

I think Kaio could have been great. His style reminds me of Taiho except with many self inflicted mistakes thrown in and of course his egg like nature.

Of course that should have been zeNsho.Typo...that time. :-D

All the best.
