Peterao 3 Posted May 27, 2008 Personally, I also think that it is absurd that we are talking about a tsunatori run one basho after kadoban. After a zensho, maybe, and then only with another zensho. But all that Kotooshu has done now is reassert himself as an ozeki... That was all that Kotozakura had done after the first of his two straight 14-1 yusho, leading to his promotion. In his previous three basho, he had won a total of 18 bouts, with three kadoban of his own in the previous nine basho; although he had won two ozeki yusho, albeit 3 1/2 years before. Andy Adams wrote in Sumo World's 2nd issue that just before his miraculous comeback, he looked to be at the end of the line. But they desperately needed another yokozuna at the time and felt they couldn't wait on Wajima. It would be somewhat ironic if his future deshi would be the first ozeki in 58 years to win two straight yusho and not be promoted. Kotozakura wasn't Kadoban at the time. Sure, he had 8-7 and 9-6 records before his run, but at least it could be argued that he was upholding the minimum standards of ozeki for four basho, something that Kotooshu cannot say yet. Kotozakura also only had five full basho after his promotion to Yokozuna. Do you really want to see the same fate befall Kotooshu? What's the rush...if he's worthy of being a yokozuna, he will ultimately get the promotion (see Ho, Haku)
Manekineko 200 Posted May 27, 2008 Of course, there is a significant probability that Kotooshu won't win Nagoya. This yusho renewed my faith in his capabilities, but getting two straight yusho is tough, physically and mentally. He may be the best of the rest, and two yokozuna may not be in the best shape in the next basho, either. But he would still have to win 15 bouts, some of them against tricky opponents. Will he have enough motivation for another such basho? We shall see.

I agreee with Manekineko that first of all Osh must win but looking in the past Hakuho rekord before his promotion is not what we called outstanding: 8-7 0-0-15 10-
Asojima 2,874 Posted May 27, 2008 I agreee with Manekineko that first of all Osh must win but looking in the past Hakuho rekord before his promotion is not what we called outstanding: 8-7 0-0-15 10-5 He was injured in the 8-7 basho. That basho had been preceded by 4 yusho/jun-yusho bashos. The 10-5 basho was still a recuperation basho, and it was immediately followed by another solid string of yusho/jun-yusho bashos. I would call that outstanding, and I am not a Hakuho fan.

That-Satsu-Guy 1 Posted May 27, 2008 (edited) Kotooushuu milks the yusho: Hey, I was drinking one of those last night. One pack only costs ¥100. They're called "Aqua Bulgaria" and they're not pure yogurt like the drinkable Bulgaria yogurt (のむヨーグルト). I'd rather have had the のむヨーグルト, but they don't sell it in vending machines. At least, I've never seen it in one.... Man, I love yogurt! I wonder if I like Kotooshu more because I associate him with it? Probably not. Good luck in Nagoya, big man! You'll need it! Kintamayama 45,097 Posted May 27, 2008 No. Do I really have to explain what I mean to someone of your intelligence?? Yes. (Laughing...) I know it's yogurt, but saying "Kotooushuu yogurts the yusho" would not have had any pseudo-humorous connotations. I understand that it probably was somewhat remotely cumbersomely humorous only to me and my close-knit family, but I always give it a try anyhow..

paolo 0 Posted May 27, 2008 .... Since I seem to be the only pro-Uchidate man... For some who may be new to Ozumo, her views may be considered to be extreme but I'd rather have a YDC made of members with a variety of opinion, rather than rubber stamping whatever the Rijicho wants..... Actually what I find very much to be appreciated of her is the fact that she says what she thinks, which is clearly not everybody's attitude around her. ....You may also want to know Asashoryu himself listened to what she says. Remember it was her who insisted he received kensho with his right hand and now he does so every time.... To tell the truth this does not look exactly a good example.... As far as I have read, nobody had made any objections to a left-handed person taking kensho with his left hand, before Ms. Uchidate woke up one morning and decided it was not good. The development of the story suggests that everybody, Asashoryu included, decided in the end that it was better for him to change to the right hand just to prevent useless discussions. Maybe a womanish whimsy ?

Maybe a womanish whimsy ? In India and Middle Eastern countries the left hand is considered unclean and used for among other things wiping your arse. The right hand is used for eating, for shaking hands, blessing someone etc.. Is there something similar in Japan? Having lived in India for part of my childhood,,even though I thought Ms Uchidate's insistence that Asashoryu take the kensho envelope with the right hand petty,it always made me slightly wince seeing Asashoryu take it with just his left hand. "....You may also want to know Asashoryu himself listened to what she says. Remember it was her who insisted he received kensho with his right hand and now he does so every time...." Perhaps,Asashoryu would have been a little more responsive to that sage advice had it come from say Taiho,Kitanoumi,Chiyonofuji or Takanohana. salle 11 Posted May 27, 2008 I know it's yogurt, but saying "Kotooushuu yogurts the yusho" would not have had any pseudo-humorous connotations. If it was me I'd say he "ayrans the yusho" using the Bulgarian word for drinkable yoghurt (both words Ayran and Yoghurt are of Turkish origin) Doesn't sound funny indeed. What about using Bulgarian name of yoghurt? Here we call it "sour milk". I'm sure Kintamayama can come with some nice sentence combining sour and yusho :) P.S. We don't eat yoghurt sour here. It becomes sour within 24hours if 1) It is real and not "equivalent". 2) It's home made so not full of preservatives. Difficult to match these conditions in 2008 I am afraid/

Sashohitowa 6 Posted May 27, 2008 And yet another note in the Wailing Wall is answered. Kintama-san, is this note yours, or Kotooshu has "post" it when he was visiting Israel? By the way, your jokes are really fine. But I guess that saying it in a plain text every time will just ruin their effect.... Will turn sour your milk, so to say. Back to the yogurt (off-topic): "Yogurt" and "Sour milk" is not the same. I am not an expert, but AFIK the (real) Bulgarian sour milk is made with this bacteria. And the yogurt is made with something else. I live abroad for over an year now, and I have to substitute the sour milk with the local yogurts. (Additional problem is that here (in Vienna) the people usually by "yogurt" mean sweet or fruity yogurt.) I must tell you that it is just not the same. I can give you as an example the real coffee and a de-caffed one. Looks the same, the taste is similar, but somehow.... joyless, without any spirit. Bad cover version, like "Pulp" would say. Like Hakurozan's henka. I have never tried Japanese "Bulgarian yogurt", but what I know is that they somehow have the Lactobacillus imported, so they produce it by the "classical" technology. Sounds very good if true.
