Hello everyone!

Recommended Posts

It is a great pleasure to introduce myself. I am an Italian (A sekitori...) based in Kyushu, Japan.

I start to be a Sumo otaku in 2004. I was so fortunate to have a seat at all the four bashos (twice in Tokyo, Osaka and Hakata, and once in Nagoya). My dream is to have a front row seat in a senshuraku (Whistling...)

In the web, I started to post in the forum of the italian site sumo.it in 2006, and now I decided that it`s time to partecipate actively to this amazing forum, that I started to read about one year ago.

My favorite rikishi are in my signature. As a European, I supported Kotooshu a lot during the last natsu basho, and I wonder if someday an Italian rikishi will reach the top of the banzuke...or if at least an Italian will ever partecipate to some basho... (Sigh...)

Welcome to the Forum.

There was once a report of an Italian recruit, named Paolo Allesi-Yamada. Unfortumately, he disappeared before the shin-deshi exam and was never heard of again. (I am not worthy...)

A new recruit from Italy will be joining ex-Terao's Shikoroyama beya.

Paolo Allesi-Yamada, (17) son of an Italian teacher and Japanese ballerina, was

recruited by Shikoroyama Oyakata, who saw video-tapes of him. Paolo's background

is in Taek-wan-do, being a member of Italy's national youth team. His father Fabricio (it

looks that way, hard to tell from the katakana) is a language teacher from Milano and

Fusako, his mother, is a former ballet dancer who moved to Italy in the early 80s.

Over the years, Fusako, who is a great Sumo fan, "spoon-fed" her son with

old clips of Chiyonofuji, Takanohana, Musashimaru and Akebono. Paolo took an instant

liking to it. He was "too shy" to practice it, so he went for Taek-wan-do. As he grew, he

sensed he had the skills and build (1.85, 94 kilos)for Sumo. "With many foreigners

doing well in Sumo lately, I'd like to give it a chance", he said. He arrived in Japan

a month ago and has been staying with relatives. "A great addition to our heya. He is

young and determined to learn. He speaks a bit of Japanese", said Shikoroyama.

Thanks for the information, Madorosumaru-sama. I never heard about Paolo. It`s a pity that he disappeared so quickly (I am not worthy...) ...

IIRC - the university in Hiroshima was being kept alive by Italians. About 5 years back now - there were only Italians and a Japanese (woman coach) in the club

Any search is your firend types?

Not sure about Italians. There was at least one Muslim but I'm not sure which country he was from, and I think there was also a Brazilian.

I've just found their old homepage. It was two Mexicans, a Spaniard and a Morrocan.
