Day 5 results and day 6 pairings

Recommended Posts

Asashoryu is drifting out of the yusho race rather early as he lost to Tochinonada for already his second loss in the first third of the basho. The other yokozuna Hakuho is undefeated at 5-0 and leading along with sekiwake Ama who won against kadoban ozeki Chiyotaikai. Ozeki Kaio lost aganst Kotoshogiku, leaving Kotomitsuki as the sole ozeki at 4-1 with the other three at 3-2. Kisenosato won the komusubi match-up against Toyonoshima. No maegashira rikishi are undefeated anymore as Tochiozan lost to Yoshikaze to fall into a six rikishi strong group of maegashira at 4-1.

The juryo division still has four undefeated rikishi as Kitataiki, Bushuyama, Kyokunankai and Tosayutaka won. Only Wakakoyu lost to Tamaasuka and is joined by Mokonami and Hakurozan at 4-1, the only foreigners among the leaders. Ichihara is down to 0-5 and it looks like he will join Sakaizawa on the injury elevator down to makushita. Russian shin-sekitori Aran beat Ryuo and is 3-2, just on pace to stay in juryo.

Ama gets me all excited everytime!

Exciting Sumo, different techniques, well thought out strategy, persistence, humbleness, just plain awesome! (Shaking head...)

Chiyotaikai didn't just roll over and give him the win either! Taikai had a decent tsuppari attack and good movement before Ama pushed him out. Ama was nice and kept him from falling out though, respecting the kadoban Ozeki which was nice to see.

This is really Ozeki-run territory now :-O

The last time Ama started 5-0 as a sekitori was Aki 2006, when he went on to 11-4 to claim the jun-yusho. (Actually that was also the first time, and the streak ended at 6-0.) Granted that was from M6, not sekiwake, so this one is more impressive and can only portend amazing things from Ama in the future.

:-S

(Bart...)

Is it just me or has Ama got more powerful?

I remember seeing a documentary which showed his intense weight-lifting regime. Watching him exchange tsupari with Chiyotaikai today and his powerful Oshidashi win over...dang who was it?...well he had one a day or two ago which had the commentators exclaiming 'What power!'

It seems to me like he is more and more adding pushing strength to his speed and technical ability.

That would be Wakanosato. Railroad style - he barely had to step past the far shikiri-sen.
