Rikishi Talk Senshuraku Nagoya Basho 2008

Recommended Posts

Satoyama

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Dimunitive 121 kg Satoyama, showing the pride of being a senior at his heya, Onoe Beya, and university, Nihon University Sumo Club, by executing a powerful shitatenage against 232 kg Yamamotoyama)

"It was just like a training session. When you have so many people watching you compete, you naturally get more excited too. But actually I could never beat him good with it (shitate-nage) during training sessions."

"This basho I have been able to execute sumo I have been envisioning. I want to make this to encourage myself to go even higher, especially now that my injuries have been getting better."

"(On the eight man kettei-sen) You know back in college days, we used to do a lot of these so in a way it was not something unfamiliar but it's really exhausting."

Yamamotoyama

--------------------

(Losing the final ketteisen battle)

"Ah...I never could do well against someone I know so well."

(Drenched with sweat all over his body as if he just came out of water)

"You know I was saying before all this, I could only do one bout. Anything more could have been scary. I must have lost at least 500 grams."

(Lost the final at the ketteisen but becoming the crowd favorite by showing splendid techniques despite his huge physique but still ensuring himself of Juryo promotion next basho)

"When you can get all that, it's more than enough. I am sure I'd have to pay for it if I ended up winning the yusho as well."

Takekaze (7-8) over Wakanosato by oshidashi, 2.8 seconds

----------------------------------------------------------------------

(Won today but losing three straight from Day 12 and ending up with makekoshi this basho. Was hoping to go back to his home, Akita Prefecture, for the jungyo as a kachikoshi rikishi.)

"I really wanted to go home as a winning rikishi. I can't really have a good homecoming with my chest held up high. But I will still keep going out and keep struggling. When you put as much efforts as you possible can, I believe some day the flower will bloom for you."

Toyohibiki (10-5) losing to Roho by hatakikomi, 1.4 seconds

----------------------------------------------------------------------

(Winning Kanto-sho)

"This basho I didn't waver at all at tachiai. It gave me more confidence that if I stick with my own sumo then I can win."

Baruto (10-5) over Ama by oshidashi, 2.5 seconds

----------------------------------------------------------

(Double digit wins and now likely to be in Sanyaku)

"I want to keep doing a sumo the next basho like I've shown today. As for the promotion, I just have to wait for the news like everyone else."

Ama (10-5) losing to Baruto

---------------------------------

(Not reaching 11th with but..)

"Well...I guess it's OK now. Ah..it's finally over. I've done it. I will now go back and rebuild myself to prepare for the next basho. I will come back stronger and do my very best again."

Toyonoshima (10-5) over Chiyotaikai by yorikiri, 4.4 seconds

------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Winning his 10th after beating Chiyotaikai, firmly ensuring himself for sekiwake promotion next basho, to become the first sekiwake out of the secondary entry exam.)

"I have a dream of becoming an ozeki. By winning 10 bouts, I believe I earned the right to aim higher while staying with my own sumo."

Tokitsukaze oyakata (former Tokitsumi) Toyonoshima's shisho

------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Not yet fully recovered from the death of recruit at the heya last year)

"I am hoping, with this, our heya will be moving to a good direction."

Takanohana oyakata, Chief dohyo judge

---------------------------------------------------

"He possesses a good sumo sense. He has a unique character all of his own so I believe he will become more popular as he builds more success."

Kotooshu (9-6) losing to Hakuho by uwatenage, 16.7 seconds

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

(After winning the yusho last basho so much has been expected but none delivered, ending with 9-6 record)

"Even prior to the basho I was starting to get so confused in my head, hearing things that I even didn't want to hear. Ozeki must first get a kachikoshi. Even (Koto)Mitsu-zeki was saying 'being an ozeki is tough.'."

"But this has been a good learning experience. But I can just only imagine the enormous pressures a yokozuna must be under even just to hold onto to their position."

Hakuho (15-0) over Kotooshu

--------------------------------------

"This is the first zen-sho (all win) yusho after becoming yokozuna and it's my first yusho here at Nagoya. It feels so good to accomplish your firsts. Today I had a sumo I exactly imagined. I am filled with happiness right now."

(On the baby about to be born in August)

"I felt the presence gave me the power I needed. It was the power of the family. But I think this is the greatest gift I can present to the child (looking over to his daughter)."

(Fulfilling the all win yusho after a stern comment from Kitanoumi oyakata after deciding the yusho on Day 13, 'Has steadiness in the sumo quite apart from other rikishi, Needs to be more than aware that as the only yokozuna left, it should be given that he wins every bout'.)

"I had no physical ailment to speak of even prior to the basho start. As I gained more experience and more time, I started to feel more responsibility. Like a graceful conduct, a pressure of not getting beaten all the time. This basho I believe I have fulfilled the responsibility as yokozuna."

Kumagatani oyakata, Hakuho's shisho

---------------------------------------------

(On Hakuho)

"He did indeed grow further. As a man he is no longer easily perturbed."

Kitanoumi oyakata, chairman of the Kyokai

--------------------------------------------------

(On Hakuho)

"He has a flexible lower back. Throwing with his lower back by well utilizing a centrifugal force."

(Never appearing to be overly generous to Hakuho and was asked about the next basho)

"I am sure he (Asashoryu) has his pride too."

Asashoryu

------------

(Attending the Senshuraku launching party at Takasago Beya base camp on July 27)

"My injury (left elbow) has gotten much better now."

(Asashoryu will be returning to Mongolia on July 28 but will be back by August 5 when the summer jungyo starts as he cannot afford to be showing no respect to the jungyo when he is trying to make the Mongolian Jungyo as successful).

"Yeah, right, I am really looking forward to the Mongolian Jungyo. It is going to be great."

Takasago oyakata, Asashoryu's shisho

---------------------------------------------

"I know his elbow is recovering nicely but it isn't yet at the point where he can compete like normal right away at a jungyo. Initially he should be only doing a dohyo-iri."

I reckon this is pretty much the consensus banzuke (apart from a couple of possible E-W swaps), and would be a VERY strong joi-jin line-up indeed.
