Mark Buckton 1 Posted October 28, 2008 smoking alone. The DNA test on the doped tobacco corroborated that. The water pipe showed that three different people used it, but there were no traces of pot there. Actually, the article I read said it showed a third party had used it 水パイプからは第3者のDNAが検出された. I read it as three people, as a "second" person using it was not mentioned, so I thought, why should they mention a third person? DNA of the 3rd person was detected from the water pipe Moti - the above is from one of the translation sites you probably use (Babelfish?). It mentions 'the 3rd' person - not 'a' third person. How much credit you put in these sites is the question. Mark - it is beyond me why you are not only assuming but stating that Moti uses a translation site (and even saying so on the SML). He doesn't which might be hard to believe for you. But here's a hint for you: it's not that difficult to understand Japanese when you grow up in Japan. I think an apology on the SML might be a good suggestion. thanks for your post Alex. Erm, cough cough QUOTE(Naganoyama @ Apr 13, 2004, 11:39) I'd like to ask a question. When you translate these interesting snippets from the Japanese press, is it purely your own language skill at work, or are you assisted by any translation software? (to which Moti answered) My language skills are not that good. I can converse passibly in Japanese, but can read only hiragana and katakana. My kanji reading is non-existent. I use a translation site, a very good one that actually translates, but it translates word by word, and only translates the kanji. So by piecing stuff together, I manage, hopefully.. I'm pretty sure we have much better Japanese speakers/readers/translators here than me- I just have the time and the will, at this point in history..AND, I enjoy doing it. The translation site is this, BTW: http://www.rikai.com/perl/Home.pl

Kintamayama 45,086 Posted October 28, 2008 The translation site is this, BTW:http://www.rikai.com/perl/Home.pl So you DO know what I use, so why say Babelfish?? That was written quite a few months ago.. I've moved on a bit since. I haven't had many complaints in these last 5 years or so of translation, except the occasional slip-up and a few nudges in the right direction from the elders. BTW, have they found someone to take my place over at the SNL? I heard you were quite active in your search there, giving me a few pushes off the cliff on the way.. Mark Buckton 1 Posted October 28, 2008 Moti - I didn't read it for years - and then found you had left as you kept harping on about it so much here. You are missed there. However, you do make reference here to things only said there though so I told them 'he'll be back' - he's still reading regardless of what he says. PS - give Alex that apology reminder would you? If you mean on the SNL, it was against me, as I was specifically mentioned, or so I heard.. I wasn't offended, as I think I'm doing a great job and a great service to the online sumo community at large, putting in a lot of time and effort and money and life. I'm still waiting to pass the torch though, as I'm getting increasingly tired of this-it's tiring. I hope Sasanishiki keeps up what he's been doing lately, so I can retire to my farm. I'm not reading, definitely. Not out of anger, but out of total disinterest. Someone who IS reading sent me a detailed transcript..

Luckily, the recently mentioned maxim that "one voiced complaint represents 20 silent ones" doesn't apply to everybody's complaints, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. (As I'm sure you don't, anyway.) Funny, not even Friday yet.
kappa-joe 0 Posted October 29, 2008 (edited) ===================================================================================================== Wakanoho Interview - Third Installment ================================================================================ ===================== [snip] "I had about 1 kg of Leaf you know. I put it in tea and drank it. I poured over rice and ate it. I was staggering all around for 24 hours." [snip] This is such transparent crap... Anyone who has ever used marijuana (well, I haven't for many years, but certainly did for many years in my youth) knows that it is not only impossible to get stoned by making what used to be known as "Terrible Tea" (cf. Jack Margolis: "A Child's Garden of Grass", circa 1974), but will result in vomiting, not intoxication. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is quite simply *not* water-soluble, putting it in tea or pouring it over rice would do nothing but possibly make you test positive in a urine test. Frankly, only someone who has zero experience with marijuana and/or has done zero research on the chemistry of the plant could make such a stupid claim. Or someone at a Japanese "newspaper" who fits both the above criteria *and* has no journalistic ethics, *and* ghost-writes junk for pathetic dishonored rikishi they have paid off to allow them to defend themselves in court and further smear the entire Kyokai. Sasanishiki 57 Posted October 29, 2008 Looks like I inadvertently opened a can of worms above. I was just trying to correct a very small error that I'd seen. Moti does a wonderful job and I frankly wouldn't have the time or patience to do the huge amount of translation that he does for this forum. I must also say that I read the passage in Japanese for sense and to understand the angle they are writing about, but then use an online translation tool to help with some of the kanji or words I don't know well. Usually I'm after the selection of English possibilities it provides to translate a word rather than the one or two that I can think of off the top of my head - sometimes none are appropriate for the context so I make up what would fit in natural English. No harm in having back-ups, especially when it takes a bit of time anyway.
Kintamayama 45,086 Posted October 30, 2008 (edited) Wakanohou's motion to reinstate him in sumo has been denied today. "He is not a regular athlete. He sets an example as a rikishi and as such, smoking drugs is a serious act. the judge found the punishment befitting. Motion denied!", said his lawyer , who was claiming that the punishment was disproportionately severe compared to past punishments, hence, he should be re-instated to his former position as rikishi. Wakanohou's entertainer visa should be expiring soon, so we may be seeing the last of him pretty soon. Edited October 30, 2008 by Kintamayama
Jonosuke 28 Posted October 30, 2008 Wakanohou's motion to reinstate him in sumo has been denied today. Actually the court only denied a temporary restraint order asked by Wakanoho. The original case is still outstanding. The reason Wakanoho and his lawyer asked for the temporary restraint order was because his working visa may expire prior to the actual court case gets started so they were asking the court to have the Kyokai's dismissal order not to be finalized so he would not risk a deportation order until the court settles the issue one way or other. So right now what it means is that Wakanoho needs to find a new sponsor for him to stay in Japan indefinitely. It is not certain he will be asked to leave Japan as soon as his working visa expires but it's likely unless he make another arrangement quickly or can convince the immigration officer to give him an extension.
