Doitsuyama 1,185 Posted February 12, 2003 Anyone recognizing this ancient Yokozuna? (Xmas...)
Manekineko 200 Posted February 12, 2003 Well, his name is written on the picture, but I recognised this famous ancient yokozuna even without it. ;)
Zenjimoto 40 Posted February 12, 2003 I really love these OLD prints :) Cheers Zenjimoto
Yoavoshimaru 0 Posted February 12, 2003 Anyone recognizing this ancient Yokozuna I don't ;-) Where did you get that nice print?
Kotoseiya Yuichi 3 Posted February 12, 2003 That looks like a postcard, isn't it? Even if you didn't recognize his face (and you should! ), that black & red kesho is a clear giveaway. ;-)
Yoavoshimaru 0 Posted February 12, 2003 Hmm. I'm looking through the Kyokai yokozuna pictures. Unfortunately many of them are black and white so I can't see the colors, only the pattern. Maybe Kotozakura?
Zenjimoto 40 Posted February 12, 2003 That looks like a postcard, isn't it? Even if you didn't recognize his face (and you should! ), that black & red kesho is a clear giveaway. ;-) TOO funny!! :) I would say, the shikona written in the upper right corner is the REAL giveaway ;) Cheers Zenjimoto
Yoavoshimaru 0 Posted February 12, 2003 would say, the shikona written in the upper right corner is the REAL giveaway If you can read it! :-| Which I can't, at this point. But I am improving: I got a basic japanese book! ;-)
Kotoseiya Yuichi 3 Posted February 13, 2003 Maybe Kotozakura? You know, Doitsu did use that Santa Claus emoticon for a reason. He's not that ancient... ;-)
Tokimori 0 Posted February 13, 2003 Now I think I know who it is... (Or maybe I'm just saying so to seem cool) (I am with stupid...)
Kintamayama 45,093 Posted February 13, 2003 That is Ichinoya when he was Yokozuna. I remember it well. And don't forget-I was the first one to see it coming. Red Scaffolding
Yoavoshimaru 0 Posted February 14, 2003 That is Ichinoya when he was Yokozuna. I remember it well. And don't forget-I was the first one to see it coming. Red Scaffolding Hold on, though. If it's really Ichinoya, how come there is no Ichinoya listed as yokozuna here:Kyokai Revival of Great Yokozuna Page (Nervous...)
Doitsuyama 1,185 Posted February 14, 2003 That is Ichinoya when he was Yokozuna. I remember it well. And don't forget-I was the first one to see it coming. Red Scaffolding Hehe, Moti, you're so cruel. It seems you were far more successful than I in irritating innocent forum members.
Zentoryu 154 Posted February 14, 2003 Hold on, though. If it's really Ichinoya, how come there is no Ichinoya listed as yokozuna here:Kyokai Revival of Great Yokozuna Page Heh, Ichinoya is the oldest currently active rikishi. He wrestles down in Jonidan. I think he's somewhere around 35 to 40 years of age (Moti?). He is also a friend of Kintamayama's, who is his one of his biggest fans. So the comment about Ichinoya being a Yokozuna was a good natured one. :-D
Kintamayama 45,093 Posted February 14, 2003 Ichinoya is 42 now. He is also the guy on my avatar. He WILL be the next Yokozuna.. AND-two excellent points to Doitsuyama for the red scaffolding.. WOWWW!!
Kotoseiya Yuichi 3 Posted February 15, 2003 He WILL be the next Yokozuna.. Didn't you say that about me as well once?!?!? :-D
Fujisan 533 Posted February 26, 2003 So are you gonna tell us rookies who it is or not? I cant read Japanese and dont understand these "Clues" your giving out. Hes a big guy, thats for sure. When I checked the records the only Yokozuna I saw in a red mawashi was Kotzakura.
Kotoseiya Yuichi 3 Posted February 26, 2003 So are you gonna tell us rookies who it is or not? Takanohana. :-D
Kotoseiya Yuichi 3 Posted February 26, 2003 When I checked the records the only Yokozuna I saw in a red mawashi was Kotzakura. You probably mean keshomawashi (the apron). A red tsuna (yokozuna's belt) is used only very rarely, viz. when a yokozuna has his 60th birthday, he might give a single dohyo-iri wearing a red tsuna. (For some undisclosed reason Kotozakura didn't arrange this ceremony (kanreki yokozuna dohyo-iri).) I think I have some pictures of those rare occasions. I think there were few on the image thread as well.
Yoavoshimaru 0 Posted February 26, 2003 A red tsuna (yokozuna's belt) is used only very rarely I've never seen one. I'll go search for pictures. Are any other tsuna colors ever used?
Kotoseiya Yuichi 3 Posted February 26, 2003 Are any other tsuna colors ever used? Never seen anything but white and very rarely red. Here's Taiho wearing red in 2000.
Yubiquitoyama 4 Posted February 26, 2003 Are any other tsuna colors ever used? Never seen anything but white and very rarely red. Very rarely means "7 times and counting" or something like that... Up to now only 7 yokozunas have had a kanreki dohyo-iri, and that is as far as I know the only occasion with a colored tsuna: Tachiyama
Kotoseiya Yuichi 3 Posted February 26, 2003 The very ceremony of kanreki yokozuna dohyo-iri is somehow related to the Japanese idea that a person's sixtieth year is especially important to him or her. I can't remember the exact numbers but there are about... four (?) years (partly same, partly different for men & women) in a person's life that are somehow considered especially important. Someone please elaborate unless I find a good link to be added here. :-D UPDATE: I found Takashima Hatsuhisa's page that explains the significance of 60. Manekineko 200 Posted February 26, 2003 I know 3 and 5 (and 7?) years of age are considered significant, some only for boys, some only for girls... kanreki, or 60 years of age, is linked with Chinese horoscope, where there are 12 signs in five cycles. After your 60th birthday, you're again in the exactly same Chinese zodiac year as when you were born... (fire snake, for me).
