Doitsuyama 1,192 Posted March 29, 2009 Kotoyutaka lost to Kirinowaka, giving the lowest-ranked juryo rikishi the 8-7 kachi-koshi on the strength of a 4-2 record against makushita opponents. This also means that there probably will be only three promotions from makushita to juryo with only Sagatsukasa as a clear candidate. The other two promotions might be awarded to Jumonji and Tamaasuka. Yoshiazuma or even Kitazakura might get lucky and displace either Jumonji or Tamaasuka I guess. The makushita yusho was settled in a knock-out tournament with the eight rikishi who finished 6-1. Tokushinho looked pretty good in winning his three bouts make the decision in his favour. In other final bouts several interesting rikishi won to finish 5-2 with Chinese Sokokurai, Fukao, Shibuya, Nionoumi, Kitazono and the slender Russian Amuru. The sandanme yusho kettei-sen was won by Wakarikido who managed to beat lead sandanme Maeta. Chiyonokuni won the jonidan playoff as expected against Onoyama to crown his quick return to sandanme while Aoki had the upper hand in the jonokuchi playoff between the two 6-1 rikishi in the lowest division. The two Mongolian shin-deshi Azumaryu and Takanoiwa won today to finish 5-2. Danjinoumi 10 Posted March 29, 2009 Well done, Tokushinho! (In jonokuchi...) After the worst basho in his young career (albeit at his highest rank), he comes back strong with a yusho performance. Must've been the shikona change that did it for him. By winning the Makushita yusho, will he automatically be promoted to Juryo, or at Ms17e, is he too low on the banzuke for that? Asashosakari 19,648 Posted March 29, 2009 (edited) This also means that there probably will be only three promotions from makushita to juryo with only Sagatsukasa as a clear candidate. The other two promotions might be awarded to Jumonji and Tamaasuka. Yoshiazuma or even Kitazakura might get lucky and displace either Jumonji or Tamaasuka I guess. I'll go with Tamaasuka and Yoshiazuma, especially because - in my admittedly sample-sized-challenged impression - having both Ms2 at 4-3 might well "deadlock" them to favour Yoshiazuma...if there were only Ms2e 4-3 and Ms4e 5-2 they might go with the Ms2e, but I think they're loathe to promote one guy at a rank and not the other. The recent patterns point to the Ms4e anyway even without that, though. Well, not long to wait... The makushita yusho was settled in a knock-out tournament with the eight rikishi who finished 6-1. Tokushinho looked pretty good in winning his three bouts make the decision in his favour. Pretty darn impressive indeed. He's been on the webstream pretty regularly for a while now and he often had the bad habit of simply trying to "out-mass" and out-wait his opponents Kotonowaka-style. (Back troubles? That's always my first thought with the super-heavy rikishi...) Totally different guy this basho and especially in the playoff bouts, lots of well-targeted aggression and forward-moving. If he can keep that up he's in juryo before the year is over. Well done, Tokushinho! (In jonokuchi...) ... By winning the Makushita yusho, will he automatically be promoted to Juryo, or at Ms17e, is he too low on the banzuke for that? No, he would have been too low even with a 7-0, and the yusho doesn't provide any particular bonus, it's just a normal 6-1 record for banzuke purposes. At first glance I think he'll be somewhere between Ms3e and Ms4e which would be slightly lucky (Ms5-6 is the "normal" height). Looks like he'll be about where he was last basho, or maybe a slight bit higher. He didn't fare so well the first time around from that rank, but maybe he'll be able to parlay the confidence he gained from winning the yusho into a successful push to a Juryo promotion. EDIT: I should have read Doitsuyama's post about Juryo promotions a little more carefully also. Edited March 29, 2009 by Danjinoumi
Asashosakari 19,648 Posted March 31, 2009 BTW, thanks to his yusho we got another weight update for Tokushinho - the Sumo DB had him at 190.3 kg from last year's spring weigh-in, the end-of-year update at the Kyokai DB boosted that to 202.5, and now four months later he's even up to 215!
