Randomitsuki 2,826 Posted May 15, 2009 Standings after day 6: Hey, this is the freak wave. Only in so far as it is without major upsets until now. But then again, the very fact that Aoki, Azumaryu, and Honda already picked a first loss is somewhat surprising to me. Exil got a headstart with a very wise Notoazuma pick. We are talking about Notoazuma, not Oazuma. He never was on my talent radar, but given my impeccable lower division strength ratings, he should be a force to be reckoned with in low Sandanme (but still shouldn't be as good a pick on paper as Kawashita or Tenroku). Speaking of Tenroku, he is undefeated as well, and so a large bandwagon is on Exil's heels (ouch). Notoazuma is an obvious candidate for most brilliant pick, but Oshirokita's Sakaguchi is a close contender. I do not follow the ama / pre-ozumo circuit close enough, so I would always have a hard time to pick the best guy from the Haru pack. Was Sakaguchi more successful than, say, Honda, before entering mae-zumo? Or what else did make Oshirokita pick such a splendid choice? Rank Shikona Surfs Position Standing 1. Itachi 396 Posted May 16, 2009 Sakaguchi's a college grad, and Honda is 16 years old. I wouldn't dare to predict that Sakaguchi will actually have the better career, but for their first basho that's a pretty easy call IMO. (Shockingly, Honda leads 9-8 in PTYW picks...) Sakaguchi was my choice to have the best record as a shindeshi as well for that reason. A good maezumo record is just one indicator of potential success in the first basho. Size and maturity are the others. Some knowledge of the new entrants' pre-ozumo career would be nice too but I usually don't go that far. If they're only 16 or so then I figure they haven't had as much experience at whatever level of sumo as the new guy who's a few years older so at the same size and maezumo record, I'll always go for the older guy. Does anyone think that the heya or the shushin data are useful? There must be heya with better or worse track records of finding good talent and developing it. Are there prefectures that have a higher proportion of successful rikishi as a percentage of their participants?
Oshirokita 188 Posted May 16, 2009 Was Sakaguchi more successful than, say, Honda, before entering mae-zumo? Or what else did make Oshirokita pick such a splendid choice?44. Oshirokita*** Sakaguchi Jk19e 3-0 As Asashosakari and Itachi (both of whom are ozeki in PTYW game, so have good analysis of lower division rikishi) have said, Sakaguchi's age was the tipping factor. Both Honda & Sakaguchi were 3-0 in maezumo, so the difference of maturity and coordination are more likely to give the edge to the older newbie, at least for their first basho. Of course, if Sakaguchi should not get 7 wins (or at the very least 6, I will be disappointed in my pick).
Randomitsuki 2,826 Posted May 19, 2009 Standings after day 10: After day 6 I ventured the guess that Tenroku might be a better pick than Notoazuma. In a basho where all my lower division predictions have gone awry, I was highly interested in day 10, as these two actually met on the dohyo. And in fact, Tenroku has won, so at the moment his support crew (led by yours truly) enjoys first place. Of course, it is entirely possible that both Notoazuma and Tenroku finish with the same record, so we'll see. Rank Shikona Surfs Position Standing 1. Exil** Notoazuma Sd93e 4-1 2.
