The makuuchi yusho race is thinning quickly as Kotomitsuki and Toyohibiki lost to Harumafuji and Kisenosato to drop out, with Kotoshogiku being another casualty with a loss against Takamisakari. Hakuho, Asashoryu and Kaio won to keep the high pace among the top five rikishi up. Ozeki Kaio actually already is kachi-koshi with his 950th career win, maybe he even can finish in double digits for the first time in two years?

Komusubi Tochiozan avoided make-koshi with a win over Aminishiki and is 3-7 as is sekiwake Baruto after the loss to Asashoryu. Sekiwake Goeido and komusubi Kakuryu both won and are a good 5-5, considering that they will get several maegashira opponents on the rest of the schedule. Kisenosato is ready to take a free spot in sanyaku but otherwise it's slim pickings as usual with just Kotoshogiku at 7-3 within striking distance. Kyokutenho might finish strong, but he still has a few sanyaku opponents left.

Bushuyama won his fourth straight and at 5-5 can hope for kachi-koshi again, but Kimurayama lost to Mokonami and is only one loss away from demotion. Hokutoriki is doing surprisingly bad at 3-7, coming from a 2-13 last basho. Shimotori won his second bout this basho, but also still needs a 3-2 on the last third of the basho (like Bushuyama and Hokutoriki).

In juryo this was another day with all leaders losing, this time Tosayutaka (in makuuchi) and Tamaasuka were the culprits. Four out of seven pursuers won, making a very crowded yusho race with six rikishi at 7-3 and seven more at 6-4.
