Day 9 results and day 10 pairings

Hakuho seems to be headed to a relatively easy yusho this basho as Asashoryu slipped to his second loss already, and Harumafuji even is at three losses after he quickly got flipped by ozeki Kotomitsuki for a strange hatakikomi (looked a lot more like kubinage to me). Ok, Kotooshu also is 9-0 after beating Kaio in a long bout, and Kotomitsuki at 8-1 also is within striking distance, not to forget impressive sekiwake Kisenosato at 7-2. But those opponents can't strike the same fear to Hakuho despite losing to Kotooshu last basho, thereby missing a new six-basho-record - Hakuho still equalled Kitanoumi's record of 85-5 in six consecutive basho.

Baruto and Aminishiki rebounded from their losses to move to 7-2, along with surprisingly strong Shotenro, but Tokitenku didn't, falling to 6-3 with a loss against Kasugao. Wakakoyu was the only winning shin-makuuchi today, leaving quite some impression on Yamamotoyama with his tsuppari, manhandling him the same way in the first bout and the tori-naoshi.

Ex-ozeki Dejima showed some de-ashi against Tochinonada but couldn't avoid a kotenage loss, and at 2-7 he now needs a 4-2 over the last six days to avoid demotion or more likely intai. The NHK sumo coverage seems to be on to something as they started the day with a retrospective on Dejima's ozeki-clinching yusho in Nagoya ten years ago.

Wakanosato survived a scare against Wakatenro as he fell to the dohyo only closely after pushing his aite out. Hokutoriki had no problems at all executing his oshidashi thing against Kitataiki. Tamaasuka had another strong bout, beating genki Kimurayama with oshidashi and staying one win behind the two leaders, while Kirinowaka and Daishoumi joined Kitataiki at two behind. Kotokuni secured demotion in near record time, falling to 1-8 already, with heya-mate Kotoyutaka and Hoshihikari also in big demotion danger as both need four wins. Sakaizawa got his first win, clearly beating Toyozakura, but he also still needs four wins in the remaining six bouts. And then there's veteran Kitazakura who lost to Hakuba and can afford only one more loss, so there are plenty demotion candidates this basho.

You know, today's loss against remarkably good and consistent Shotenro notwithstanding, I've really been enjoying this year's resurgence of Tamanoshima. Not sure if this is necessarily positive, but for me he has just about taken over the mantle of "businessman sumo" from his stablemate Tamarikido now - shows up, pummels his opponent off the dohyo in usually short order, then disappears from the collective consciousness like nothing happened.

BTW, doesn't Dejima most likely need 7 wins to stay? I mean, 6 could be enough, but we're headed towards 3+ promotions from juryo this basho without a whole lot of other candidates for demotion besides Wakakoyu.

Doesn't that usually end up in the last promotion candidate getting shafted? I still remember how Chiyotaikai got the short stick with an 11-4 from J3 and also with a 9-6 from J1, making his way from juryo debut to makuuchi debut longer than he needed from makuuchi debut to ozeki debut...

I don't think that's true anymore - just look at the Bushuyama-Toyozakura exchange after January. Of course I'm making the assumption that all of Tamaasuka/Hokutoriki/Wakanosato will be clearly promotion-worthy, e.g. 9-6/10-5/11-4 minimum.

What was the gyoji up to at the end of the Yoshikaze-Asasekiryu bout? (Shaking head...)

Asaseki was wondering the same thing. He may have been trying to stop the match to do a mawashi adjustment. Just a guess.

Yes, the mawashi musubi was almost completely undone at the back. The gyoji was about to tap them both on the back and tell them yame when he saw that the match was nearly over anyways so he pulled his hands back but perhaps this threw Asasekiryu off and he let himself be waltzed off the dohyo.

And as he pointed the gumbai in Yoshikaze's direction, he had kind of a clenched teeth irritated look...couldn't tell if he was mad at the rikishi for not stopping, or at himself for possibly affecting the outcome...or both.
