Period

Recommended Posts

Period. How annoying it is when someone writes "period" to make a point. That gives an impression of some devine arrogance and finality which is not suitable for humans. Especially when people write "Period." after they have expressed an opinion! (Clapping wildly...)

If I'd be a cartoonist I would create a cartoon (short-lived I am sure..) where a grumpy old man dressed in blackest of the blackest outfit would walk around the world holding a crooked cane in his hand and he would have supernatural gift for hearing all "Period."-comments by people (in all languages where such a nasty habit has infiltrated) from any distance which would provoke him to walk to the person and hit the person in the head with the crooked cane. All sorts of scenes would occur and he would get beaten up occasionally, arrasted, looking upon with great bafflement, disdain and disapproval. It would be really meaningless cartoon with no moral of the story nor educational value and soon it would be banned and forgotten. Only handful of people (mostly strange people) would cherish the banned/ignored cartoon as cult material. It would also be a boring cartoon for most people.

I have expressed my irritation now. Period.

Post-basho depression. Questionmark.

If that is the case, I've got a little bit of basho for you.

No, I didn't make it. I don't know number or season of the episode but it's when Lisa pretends to be a college student and goes to a poetry reading and some guy reads a poem about somebody named just "Basho" and those guys cheer him on yelling "Go Basho!".

It's from the season 13 episode "Little Girl in the Big Ten".

I confess that I instantly thought of the poet Bashō when I saw the picture, and not of the sumō-style basho. My obsession with macrons over long ō and ū certainly helps! :-( If you look closely you'll see a nice macron over the ō. Astonishing to see such accuracy in a series like Simpsons.

You can download most of the Simpsons episodes from Kazaa/KLite. My little sister has got a bunch of episodes we don't have on tape that way, including the "Little Girl In The Big Ten". Quality is between bad and great, depending on the size of the file, but they are all watchable.

The Simpsons creators really are excellent in that regard. They have been very accurate in quotations, references, etc, from the start.
