Kozaru 0 Posted September 26, 2009 (edited) So the Mayan calendar supposedly ends in December 2012, and the loony religious nutters have hijacked this to mean the end of the world or the rapture or some garbage. Discuss. If the Mayans were so smart, can they tell us who the next Japanese Yokozuna is? Or will that possibility be eliminated by the world ending? Asameshimae 220 Posted September 26, 2009 When I first read about this in a very detailed book some 10+ years ago, there were two dates very big on the Mayan calendar. One has already passed I remember, without a blip. So I don't worry about it too much. If something does happen, in the back of my mind I will be wondering why we all got so excited about Y2K as we all scamper around watching the atmosphere being sucked away... erm...sumo... But when it passes without incident, the nutters will just choose another date, or another way to try to insert fear of the supernatural into our daily lives. And here it is. While the site is hopelessly outdated, the entries clearly indicate that most of us have survived the end of the world at least a 100 times. But on the timescales we're talking about, it is highly likely that humanity will not be around to see it. While I'm sure the arrival of the 13th b'ak'tun on the Mayan calendar will sell someone a lot of books, worrying about the end of the world then is akin to assuming your Honda will fall apart when the odometer turns over 100,000 miles, simply *because* the odometer is turning over 100,000.
