Kozaru 0 Posted September 26, 2009 (edited) So the Mayan calendar supposedly ends in December 2012, and the loony religious nutters have hijacked this to mean the end of the world or the rapture or some garbage. Discuss. If the Mayans were so smart, can they tell us who the next Japanese Yokozuna is? Or will that possibility be eliminated by the world ending? Asameshimae 220 Posted September 26, 2009 When I first read about this in a very detailed book some 10+ years ago, there were two dates very big on the Mayan calendar. One has already passed I remember, without a blip. So I don't worry about it too much. If something does happen, in the back of my mind I will be wondering why we all got so excited about Y2K as we all scamper around watching the atmosphere being sucked away... erm...sumo... Kozaru 0 Posted September 26, 2009 (edited) I don't worry about it too much. If something does happen.... I have science training and double as an atheist blogger. I don't worry about it at all. But when it passes without incident, the nutters will just choose another date, or another way to try to insert fear of the supernatural into our daily lives. Asashosakari 19,319 Posted September 26, 2009 Perhaps not the forum for it but I'll say it anyway: In before lock.
Fujisan 533 Posted September 26, 2009 (edited) Well Kozaru, many people consider me a religious nutter but trust if the end of the world is coming the Mayans wouldn't have known anything about it. Edited September 26, 2009 by Fujisan
Randomitsuki 2,826 Posted September 26, 2009 (edited) The Internet is a great thing. I thought that it would be cool if someone had compiled a list of all the doomed doomsday prophesies. And here it is. While the site is hopelessly outdated, the entries clearly indicate that most of us have survived the end of the world at least a 100 times. Kozaru 0 Posted September 27, 2009 Well Kozaru, many people consider me a religious nutter... Actually Fujisan, your "nuttering" over at ST was the main inspiration that made me start my site. So thanks. ;-)
Kozaru 0 Posted September 27, 2009 On the other hand if you believe science the earth cant last forever so one day someone will be right... Yes. But on the timescales we're talking about, it is highly likely that humanity will not be around to see it. And if we are around, there is no reason that the end of Earth has to be the end of humanity.
Fujisan 533 Posted September 27, 2009 Actually Fujisan, your "nuttering" over at ST was the main inspiration that made me start my site. So thanks. ;-) Different place, different rules.... This isn't the place for religious discussion,do you go on Twitter?
Kozaru 0 Posted September 27, 2009 This isn't the place for religious discussion,do you go on Twitter? No, I haven't made the Twitter leap yet. The Off-topic category isn't the place for this? So I guess you're saying that this entire forum isn't the place.
Kozaru 0 Posted September 27, 2009 I didn't mean to break the rules, if this is. Once the Mayan thing was mentioned in the other thread (not by me), I just directed it here to avoid ruining the other one (like I may have ruined my Takami-Aran thread). But I can support removal of this thread if it's against the rules.
Kuroyama 715 Posted September 27, 2009 So the Mayan calendar supposedly ends in December 2012, and the loony religious nutters have hijacked this to mean the end of the world or the rapture or some garbage.Discuss. If the Mayans were so smart, can they tell us who the next Japanese Yokozuna is? Or will that possibility be eliminated by the world ending? While I'm sure the arrival of the 13th b'ak'tun on the Mayan calendar will sell someone a lot of books, worrying about the end of the world then is akin to assuming your Honda will fall apart when the odometer turns over 100,000 miles, simply *because* the odometer is turning over 100,000. I honestly don't understand why anyone is even thinking about this.
Kozaru 0 Posted September 27, 2009 While I'm sure the arrival of the 13th b'ak'tun on the Mayan calendar will sell someone a lot of books.... Will? Try HAS. Check this out. Fujisan 533 Posted September 27, 2009 The Off-topic category isn't the place for this? So I guess you're saying that this entire forum isn't the place. Yes,you have seen the trouble it caused on ST thats why its against the rules...... Come on twitter and debate it to your hearts content I guarantee it will be a hot topic there. Kintamayama 45,111 Posted September 27, 2009 I didn't mean to break the rules, if this is. I highly doubt (though I am not a moderator or a son of a moderator) that talking about the Mayan calendar constitutes a discussion about religion. More like discussing superstition, writing's on the wall.
Fujisan 533 Posted September 27, 2009 (though I am not a moderator or a son of a moderator) that talking about the Mayan calendar constitutes a discussion about religion. More like discussing superstition, writing's on the wall. Writings on the walll alright, trust me it will soon turn into a religious discussion especially with references to false prophecy.... Kozaru 0 Posted September 27, 2009 A lot of prophecies will come true if you have long enough to wait, or people who decide matters based on those prophecies (ie. the formation of Israel by the international community). It's when they attempt to give specifics, like years, that they fall flat on their faces and show that there's nothing to them.
Exil 301 Posted September 27, 2009 I highly doubt (though I am not a moderator or a son of a moderator) that talking about the Mayan calendar constitutes a discussion about religion. More like discussing superstition, writing's on the wall. I thought so, too. But, to quote loosely, one man's superstition is another man's religion. PM me if you want to continue this discussion John or join twitter.... Indeed. Please keep religious discussion of all kinds out of the public forum.

Fujisan 533 Posted September 28, 2009 No interest in twitter sorry. Not interested in debate either. What's the point when I know I'm right. I'm only interested in gaining power so I can crush my enemies or those who disagree with me. What do you think I do on twitter? (Whistling...) And you wont debate me? I have won this battle if you quit before the tachai... (Clapping wildly...)
