Mayan doomsday prophecy

Recommended Posts

So the Mayan calendar supposedly ends in December 2012, and the loony religious nutters have hijacked this to mean the end of the world or the rapture or some garbage.

Discuss.

If the Mayans were so smart, can they tell us who the next Japanese Yokozuna is? Or will that possibility be eliminated by the world ending?

When I first read about this in a very detailed book some 10+ years ago, there were two dates very big on the Mayan calendar. One has already passed I remember, without a blip. So I don't worry about it too much. If something does happen, in the back of my mind I will be wondering why we all got so excited about Y2K as we all scamper around watching the atmosphere being sucked away...

erm...sumo...

I have science training and double as an atheist blogger. I don't worry about it at all. But when it passes without incident, the nutters will just choose another date, or another way to try to insert fear of the supernatural into our daily lives.

Well Kozaru, many people consider me a religious nutter but trust if the end of the world is coming the Mayans wouldn't have known anything about it.

The Internet is a great thing. I thought that it would be cool if someone had compiled a list of all the doomed doomsday prophesies. And here it is. While the site is hopelessly outdated, the entries clearly indicate that most of us have survived the end of the world at least a 100 times.

On the other hand if you believe science the earth cant last forever so one day someone will be right...

Actually Fujisan, your "nuttering" over at ST was the main inspiration that made me start my site. So thanks. ;-)

Yes. But on the timescales we're talking about, it is highly likely that humanity will not be around to see it. And if we are around, there is no reason that the end of Earth has to be the end of humanity.

No, I haven't made the Twitter leap yet. The Off-topic category isn't the place for this? So I guess you're saying that this entire forum isn't the place.

I didn't mean to break the rules, if this is. Once the Mayan thing was mentioned in the other thread (not by me), I just directed it here to avoid ruining the other one (like I may have ruined my Takami-Aran thread).

But I can support removal of this thread if it's against the rules.

While I'm sure the arrival of the 13th b'ak'tun on the Mayan calendar will sell someone a lot of books, worrying about the end of the world then is akin to assuming your Honda will fall apart when the odometer turns over 100,000 miles, simply *because* the odometer is turning over 100,000.

I honestly don't understand why anyone is even thinking about this.

I highly doubt (though I am not a moderator or a son of a moderator) that talking about the Mayan calendar constitutes a discussion about religion. More like discussing superstition, writing's on the wall.

What happens if you don't "believe science"? Are you reading the forum on your magic viewing portal?

Who said I didn't believe science but they do get things wrong....

A lot of prophecies will come true if you have long enough to wait, or people who decide matters based on those prophecies (ie. the formation of Israel by the international community). It's when they attempt to give specifics, like years, that they fall flat on their faces and show that there's nothing to them.

I thought so, too. But, to quote loosely, one man's superstition is another man's religion.

PM me if you want to continue this discussion John or join twitter....

Indeed. Please keep religious discussion of all kinds out of the public forum.

No interest in twitter sorry. Not interested in debate either. What's the point when I know I'm right. I'm only interested in gaining power so I can crush my enemies or those who disagree with me.

What do you think I do on twitter? (Whistling...)

And you wont debate me? I have won this battle if you quit before the tachai... (Clapping wildly...)
