Another Vegas Jungyo Planned

Recommended Posts

The Kyokai is reportedly planning to hold another jungyo tour in Las Vegas in October next year. The venue will likely be the same Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino Center, the same stage they held their tour in October 2005.

The Kyokai has not had any foreign jungyo since they had one in Mongolia in December last year and they cancelled the London Jungyo originally scheduled for this October but they have been receiving requests from such diverse places as Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea, Macao and Italy but Las Vegas has been especially persistent in their wish to hold another event there.

"We can acknowlege we are indeed in a negotiation at the moment. Hopefully we can complete the final details with the main promoter shortly so we can make the official announcement," said Oshima oyakata, Kyokai's chief director of Jungyo tours.

Just a little detail : the Mongolian jungyo was in August last year, not in December.

Anyway, lucky Nevadians (or whatever...) (In a state of confusion...)

It's clear that the NSK doesn't care about the fans (specially europeans), only about the money. (In a state of confusion...)

I am still happy with that live broadcast over the internet that they are so kind to maintain - and keep free.

I vote for Macao! It has the biggest casinos in the world (I think) if that is what they're after ;-) It is so tiny, that it would be easy to keep an eye on all rikishi. Plus it is only a couple of hours away from me by boat. (In a state of confusion...)

How was the turn out for the last jungyo that was held there? It must have been worth their while if they are considering going back. I went to the LA jungyo last summer and there was a decent turn-out. There must be more motivation to hold jungyo at foreign locations than just money though. I am assuming promoting the sport oversees tops the list.

No swine flu or drug fears this time?

I kinda feel fooled...I understand the reasons they like Vegas, but I do not have to like them...

So why isn't it that the UK hasn't had a jungyo in a while? Is there a bigger foreign fan base in the US or is it cheaper to hold one over here?

Na, there is money enough, a full house cause many people are already there and will take the chance- and it's fun to go there.

Really? Full House? Last time Day 1 in Vegas was an embarrasment in terms of attendance. I would guess 25% full, if that. They managed to get more in on Day 2 after distributing to the comp-houses. Still, I would guess they didn't get over half-full the entire time.

Anyway, I'm there! Probably with Hidariashiyama. :'-( Hoping for row 1 this time. (Shaking head...)

BTW - my old Vegas photos are here

Last one was a disaster for the promoters. Very small attendance. They lost a lot of money. The main guy ended up committing suicide later and the huge debts run up over Vegas was rumoured to have been a big reason. Kyokai was shielded from all that so I guess for them it was a fun jaunt.

Wasn't it the Hawaii event, not Vegas, that was the big disaster that caused his issues? I don't think Vegas was the same promoter. (fuzzy memory)

Looks like you're right.

I bought tickets for both Hawaii and Los Angeles through Dormtech, the company mentioned in that article. When I was looking at tickets for Vegas, I think it was directly through the hotel/resort.

I do remember with the flight, a few nights in the hotel and a ticket for both days, Vegas seemed way too expensive to me (I spent the week in Hawaii during that jungyo for less than it would have cost me for the weekend in Vegas). But, if Vegas does go forward, I'll probably make the effort to attend.

Only a five hour drive for me. Missed the last one, but will probably make this one.

New to this forum, but not to Sumo. Feel like I need to correct some misunderstandings or misinformation.

Attended all three days jungyo was held in Las Vegas. First day looked to be around 60%+ sold. It was surprisingly light. Second day much better attended and seemed to be around 70%+ sold. The last day (Day 3 - Sunday) was a near sell-out; the place was packed. My wife thinks my estimates are light. She remembers the attendance heavier.

And I hate to start an argument with my first post, but I am on the databases of the top two comp lists in Las Vegas, get emails for free shows all the time, see a lot of shows for free, and Sumo tickets were not on either one of the top lists for freebies. Period. Mandalay Bay may have comped their top players in, but there were no other comps in town I am aware of. Sorry to be argumentative in my first post, but as a Vegas local, I sort of know my way around some of this stuff.

I wonder if newly-single Asashoryu will be making a trip up to the Reno area?

Does he have to drive all the way to Reno? Aren't there ranches outside the Las Vegas city limits?

Don't know how I mixed up the Vegas guy and the Hawaii guy. Sorry about that.

Don't change the fact that the company in Japan that paid for the whole thing didn't even come close to breaking even on it.

Interview with a board member here a while back:

Good article/interview thanks. Yeah, as observed, the venue was pretty big. Maybe too big for the event. Good call. Saw Prince perform to a sell-out crowd in the same venue and even though his talent is colossal and he had quite a good sized band with him, it was sort of swallowed up by the venue.

Thanks.
