Takamisakari attacked in hanamichi

Recommended Posts

After yesterday's win, as he was walking up the hanamichi, Takamisakari was struck on his back by a middle-aged man, and ran the rest of the way. "When you're in a good mood and you suddenly get attacked, you try to get away.. It's not like I'm going to hit him back. I just wish people would be well-mannered..", he said, obviously rattled and angry.

Ha. But if it's a middle-aged lady climbing up the dohyo he leaps forward for the tackle. (Applauding...)

I watched that on tv, he wasn't attacked, the man jumped up to run after him but he never got to touch him! Takamisakari is such a paranoid strange person! Kaonishiki & Kosei get headaches to be his tsukebito! They have to keep the people away from him before his matches, after his matches... they can't let him hear who his opponent is the next day! They should get paid more! And his back up tsukebitos Owarifuji & Taikomaru too! They only deal with his craziness sometimes! When you listen to the stories more and more you feel quite sorry for them! Why is Takamisakari so freaky anyway? Why does Harumafuji stop to kiss kids in the hanamichi & Baruto stopped to talk to an old man in the hanamichi there in Fukuoka but I saw Takamisakari running like a fool! (Applauding...) (Applauding...) :-)

Why is he so popular then? Is this the dark/unknown side of Takamisakari? That's too bad.....

I watched the replay, and it seemed like the man (in white tee-shirt and red track jacket) did actually pat Sakari twice on the back... then rush back to his seat.

Well, as in any finely-tuned athletes (or musicians, or actors,etc..) you'll understand that they expect never to be touched, or interacted with by members of the audience. Sakari is an even more-than-exceptional case. Not having the best eyesight, having to get into (and maintain) a certain frame of mind to apparently overcome extreme shyness, etc, he's likely to be even more sensitive than most professional athletes. Not seeing where the contact was coming from, he probably assumed he was being attacked.

From afar, it appears that he's a special case. But having spent some time playing music at the international level, and having met artists and perfomers who are at the top of their field, I can say that in no way is he alone in this regard.

The late, great Leonard Bernstein, former conductor of the New York Philharmonic, was known to take several showers in a day, and hated to be touched by anyone.

As we speak, there is a prominant comedian/game show host/movie star (who because he is a friend, will remain nameless) who is OCD, and definitely touch-phobic.

Even still, I've never seen anyone go out and pat any rikishi on the back or in any way make contact with them... Just not done. I think anyone would have been surprised and I'm sure a few select guys would have been pleased by it, others would have re-arranged this guy's face.

Sakari is Sakari. He yam what he yam.

It's well known that Deal or No Deal's Howie Mandel has OCD. He's spoken about it publicly.

The son of a friend of mine watches that show only to be entertained by his maneuvering to avoid contact with the contestants, or to see if he caves in and tolerates it. Well, that and the suitcase models.

Except I've seen plenty of Japanese people ( mostly obasan or ojisan) go out of their way to pat their favorite rikishi. He will either ignore it or glare at them.

Personally I can't sing in a choir if I am surrounded by women singing the same line, because that is when I make stupid mistakes; I have to be out on my own at the end of the line, or else between the tenors and the first sopranos, when I have no option but to be true to my own line. (I'm sure Treblemaker knows all about this.) I know about minor phobias and I also know about the things that make us stronger or weaker, in many public performances.

Takamisakari, however, IMHO, is something else; he started with an eyesight problem that gradually built up into a major prima donna show. The 'woof-woof-woof' cheers that he publicly encourages are what turn many of us off.

FWIW, Orion after a heavy day

Orion,

It's funny you should bring that up... I just read an article where one of the lead altos of a very, very large choir somewhere in Europe was not only one of their key vocalists and coach, but she also was claustrophobic! She couldn't be surrounded by other singers, or she'd go into a panic attack. Their solution? Break up the choir into 4 sections (soprano, alto, tenor, bass) each physically separated by about 6 feet, and stick her on the outside of the section.

BTW, a pleasure to again hear your voice today. The team of you and Ross are the best Play-By-Play combination in any telecast of any sport on TV. I've said before that you could recite the phone book, and I'd happily listen. I wish you were on more regularly. As one of my friends would say (and this is meant as a compliment), you are the Monosodium Glutamate in the mix. :)

I get the distinct impression that Takamisakari didn't go to University for his academic prowess, Though as far as 'Jocks' go, he is a pretty strange 'jock'.

My funny memory of him was on a variety TV show and the "tarento" asked him what I kind of women he liked - he blurted out "women with large breasts!" .....he wont be writing any self help books on social etiquette in the future.

A reporter once asked him "why did you start sumo?" he said "because I could eat lots of food, I asked my teacher at school when I was a kid what job could I have where I can eat lots of food"......
