Harry 67 Posted January 25, 2010 Kitazakura... we cheered so loud for him in Nagoya and he wanted so badly to do well but alas it was not to be. Will he get to be oyakata, does he have the requirements for kabu? I don't know much about it.
ryafuji 814 Posted January 25, 2010 Kitazakura... we cheered so loud for him in Nagoya and he wanted so badly to do well but alas it was not to be. Will he get to be oyakata, does he have the requirements for kabu? I don't know much about it. Well he certainly has the requirements - 60 basho as a sekitori. And there's the Onogawa kabu which is owned by his shisho Kitanoumi and currently loaned to the former Yotsukasa.
kaiguma 0 Posted January 27, 2010 Sadly Futenou is not on a one basho slide. I don't think he has mentioned injuries yet. He hasn't had a KK for 7 bashos. Except of course that he had 7 wins against 4 losses just last basho... And considering it a seven-basho slide also obscures the fact that the first two MK were at ranks at which he wasn't going to be competitive anyway (just check his two years prior). So his "slide" consists of going 7-8, 6-9, 6-9, 5-10, facing essentially the same quality of opposition every time, followed by a bounceback basho in high juryo that was cut short by injury and now all of six days in which he has looked unexpectedly weak. (I wouldn't be surprised if his hamstring or something related is still bothering him.) That's not very impressive, but hardly reason enough to sound the career death knell. My OP did say "if he falls to makushita I'm afraid he's finished" or something. So at least I qualified my speculation. Less darts and more my personal worry and sad intuition. Asashosakari 19,319 Posted April 3, 2010 (edited) Dragging this back up to the top for some more overreaction ;-)...as I mentioned somewhere during the basho, Kaiho had that "prime intai candidate" look to me this basho, not merely in his results but his whole appearance. Remains to be seen if he's even ranked in juryo next basho... Perhaps he'll have a short resurgence as Kitazakura (Hugging...) did, but I doubt he's long for this world as an active sekitori. Futeno - another MK, but in completely different fashion this time. (Sign of approval...) His mobility seemed to be at least partially back, but he looked very physically weak to me. Is it possible it's not (only) injuries but some type of illness that has reduced him to his current state? Or perhaps just a complete lack of keiko... I still think he'll bounce back, but I'm going to stop betting on it in my Seki-Oracle guesses now. Jumonji - I like him and I haven't wanted to jinx him, but now that he's gone MK in makushita I might as well say it: The only time he has (IMHO) looked truly good in the last year and a half was his 9-6 juryo return last May. Everything else had been mostly smoke and mirrors even when it ended in KK, and I'm extremely skeptical that he can return to juryo yet again. That said, if he plans on getting a kabu he may not have options in the near future, so perhaps he'll be the next Tamarikido type. Outside candidate - Yamamotoyama? He better make sure he stays in juryo, because I can see him being one of those rikishi who will be completely victimized by the switch from 15 to 7 bouts and the attendant increase in motivation in his opponents. It's been well-demonstrated now how to beat him (even by very undersized guys such as Asofuji), and while there may be an occasional juryo bout in which his opponent is on cruise control that day, that's unlikely to be the case in makushita. At any rate, YMY doesn't strike me as the type of guy who would toil in the lower divisions for very long; there's probably a tarento spot waiting for him somewhere already if he wants it. Pippooshu 1 Posted April 7, 2010 (edited) I think Tochinonada and Tosanoumi will be the next. I hope Jumonji will grow up again into Juryo division but I'm afraid will be impossible. I met him in a Chanko's restaurant (Kirishima's restaurant) and spoke with him when he was Juryo, few years ago, and from there moment I'm his fan! Gamba-re, Jumonji! :-D Edited April 7, 2010 by Pippooshu
