Suppose Baruto....

Recommended Posts

Another point alluded to is motivation. HMF and Osh both have the ability to be good when they put their mind to it as shown in their recent yushos. Take Asa out of the picture and all of a sudden they have the motivation of that empty yok slot. Depending on how long it takes for Bart to make ozeki and Asa to get keel-hauled, it could be a entertaining 3-way battle for the tsuna. Beating both current yoks in one basho is nearly impossible, but take one away from the equation and suddenly it all seems possible.

Of course career sekiwake.

Is he higher than a two-time yusho winner?

Baruto's peak rating is clearly higher, yes. The strongest sekiwake was Hasegawa btw. and Baruto only is slightly better than his peak.

Just wondering when I looked at Kotonishiki's stats in the Sumo Reference, would there be a way to add their oyakata status into the career page if a rikishi didn't leave sumo after retiring? It would be really nice to see which kabu he got and/or moved through.

It's right there below "Intai", isn't it?

You are late to the party as I already have done that (with big help from Tamanaogijima and Asashosakari). Just look again, in the data at the top is a clickable header "Kabu". (Clapping wildly...)

You might be on to something here, for sure. But as Mr. D so ominously puts it, we shall see.

Thanks for the response, I wasn't sure anybody would actually read that wall of text...

Many have - I suppose as your posts of this kind are insightful. (Clapping wildly...)

But once Asashoryu is gone (and who knows how long that's going to take now, considering current developments...), the system in place will make it much tougher to find another - even a mediocre - yokozuna. Sure, Hakuho will also be sitting out tournaments with injuries at some point, but since one effect of the whole thing is that there's very likely a large number of ozeki when that happens, it'll be much harder for one of those 4 or 5 guys to put together the necessary two yusho, than if there were only 2 or 3 at the time. And even moreso if those 2 or 3 weren't strictly required to have two straight yusho, of course. It all compounds.

Here, however I do not fully agree. The possibility of somebody winning back-to-back (BTB) yusho if yokozuna is not around does not depend on ozeki status. In fact, with 5 ozeki chances are higher than with 3 ozeki that somebody of ozeki actually takes BTB yusho. Hm?

This thread is one of the reasons I love this forum. Great stuff. :) The only quibble I have with it is the motivation of rikishi based on the number of others at the rank above them. I don't think that Baruto is going to step up his game now that there's an "empty" slot at Ozeki, nor do I think that Osh or Fuji will steup up their game when Asa or Hakuho retire. They aren't Yokozuna because they don't have the talent to beat both yokozuna two bashos in a row.

OK ... I know there's the kabu page, but then I have to look up that rikishi again. What I'm asking for is that the kabu show up following the rikishi's career record so I don't have to remember which Kotonishiki to ask for when I go to the kabu page. An alternative would be a direct link to the kabu page from the rikishi's page if in fact he ever had possession of a kabu.

Oops ... I'm blind ... I was looking at the end of the career record instead after the intai date. Still would be cool to follow the career with dates of kabu changes, although perhaps not enough people care ...

I know I've been hanging around with English teachers too long so I can't read, but I had found it ... (On the banzuke...) ;-) (Showing respect...)
