Doitsuyama 1,192 Posted January 22, 2010 Yusho leader Asashoryu won against Kotooshu with a crafty kainahineri, breaking a yotsu battle in the middle of the dohyo. Afterwards he probably enjoyed watching Kaio break a string of 17 consecutive losses to Hakuho as Hakuho again was coming out too aggressively. Now Asashoryu has a two win cushion with two days to go, but if he loses tomorrow to Harumafuji it will be an exciting senshuraku as Hakuho is 6-0 against Asashoryu in honbasho bouts in 2009, so a 12-3 yusho kettei-sen isn't impossible yet. Harumafuji, Baruto and Toyohibiki also can get to 12-3 and hope for a kettei-sen as all three reached double digits today with oshidashi wins. Aminishiki actually should have been in Baruto's place here (except for the oshidashi part) as he had Baruto beat already but stupidly extended his arm to cushion the fall, thus inducing a mono-ii with a probably correct tori-naoshi decision which Baruto easily won against a limping Aminishiki. Ozeki Kaio's win against Hakuho was quite important for him as he is 7-6 now and needs only one more win (against Kisenosato tomorrow or an M4 or lower on senshuraku) and he probably wouldn't want to go into his 100th makuuchi basho with a kadoban tag. Sakaizawa and Gagamaru both won today to stay in the juryo yusho lead at 10-3, with the pursuer group cut in half as makuuchi-bound Okinoumi and shin-sekitori Sokokurai won. Lead juryo Tokusegawa already was streaking to 7-3 after a 1-3 start, but he had his third consecutive loss today and will have to try longer for the makuuchi promotion clinching eighth win. Sagatsukasa also is 7-6 as he broke his own three bouts long losing streak with a win against Asofuji. Since at least three promotion slots are pretty sure already (replacing Chiyotaikai, Koryu and Tochinonada), other rikishi will root for the two lead juryo to fail, namely Kasugao who clinched kachi-koshi today, or Kimurayama, Wakakoyu, Tosanoumi or Masatsukasa who all can still hope for two wins and a lucky promotion. Kozaru 0 Posted January 22, 2010 Should Kotooshu be embarrassed if he loses tomorrow and is the only Ozeki or Ozeki candidate who didn't beat Hakuho this basho? Even Kaio got in on the fun!

Not true. Chiyotaikai was an ozeki candidate, and he didn't beat Hakuho this basho.

Chiyotaikai was an ozeki candidate, and he didn't beat Hakuho this basho. Of the ones who actually fought him. Kotomitsuki didn't face Hakuho either. I'm sure if Chiyo had only fought him, he could have taken it...... ;-)
OneManGang 14 Posted January 22, 2010 Asashoryu will lose tomorrow and against Hakuho. Baruto will win his last two. So will Harumafuji. So will Hakuho and we will end up with a 4 way tie. Just hoping :)
ryafuji 815 Posted January 22, 2010 That's twice this basho Kaio's had me jumping out of my seat - firstly his miraculous escape against Harumafuji, and now this totally unexpected victory over Hakuho, who he hadn't beaten since 2006. His bouts aren't usually this entertaining ;-)

Kozaru 0 Posted January 22, 2010 Yep, Kaio is on a roll. This could be the basho where he gets that elusive ninth win! Stat time. Kaio has had 8 or fewer wins in 20 of the last 30 basho, going back to the beginning of 2005.
