Peterao 3 Posted February 7, 2010 Asahi.com reports that Goeido won the 34th Japan Ozumo Tournament at the Kokugikan today. After knocking off Yokozuna Hakuho in the semi-finals, Goeido then defeated Ozeki Kotooshu to win his first championship. The record for most tournament titles is four, held by some former yokozuna who's name escapes me at this time...
Peterao 3 Posted February 7, 2010 (edited) Some more stats: Yusho prize was 2,500,000 yen and "other things" bringing the total value to around 3,200,000 yen. First win by a Japanese rikishi in seven years (Musoyama, 2003) Goeido defeated Baruto by uwatedashinage, Harumafuji by yorikiri, Hakuho by oshidashi, and won the yusho over Kotooshu by sotogake Juryo division won by Masatsukasa And some pictures from the happy event: Beating Kotooshu (sure looks like he's losing though?) Peterao 3 Posted February 7, 2010 Despite the prize money this tournament is closer to pro wrestling than honbasho. He triumphed over four evil gaijin in one night. Not even Rikidozan can say that!
kawika 123 Posted February 7, 2010 OK, next time Hakuho is kyujo, maybe Goeido can get a honbasho yusho ;-)
Kozaru 0 Posted February 7, 2010 So is that it for the Japanese? Once every 7 years they'll win this event, and that's all? Soon enough there won't be any Japanese yusho portraits left in the rafters. Nishi, who was the moody knob? I have 2 guesses, Kotooshu or Takamisakari. It was funny to watch Takami stare down Hakuho. That isn't quite an accurate choice of words, but I can't think of another way to describe it. Hakuho was laughing when he turned around, and Kisenosato was having a chuckle sitting next to the ring. Soon enough there won't be any Japanese yusho portraits left in the rafters. Yusho portraits are only for honbasho. Yes, I know. The point being that if they don't win something OTHER than this event, and SOON, they will no longer be represented in the rafters. So who was the moody knob? I'm dying to find out! ;-) Edited February 8, 2010 by Kozaru

Gusoyama 104 Posted February 8, 2010 Nishi, who was the moody knob? I have 2 guesses, Kotooshu or Takamisakari. Kotooshu of course. Takamisakari is not moody. I'm of the opinion he is mentally challenged or has Aspenger syndrome. I would have guessed Harumafuji. And I think you are spot on with Asperger's for Robo. Treblemaker 254 Posted February 8, 2010 Nishi, who was the moody knob? I have 2 guesses, Kotooshu or Takamisakari. Kotooshu of course. Takamisakari is not moody. I'm of the opinion he is mentally challenged or has Aspenger syndrome. You know, you may be absolutely right. I work with some students with this, and while some symptoms don't quite match, there are some that line up correctly. I had guessed that it might be a form of Turettes, but Aspenger seems to fit the bill. At least in part. In some of his interviews that I've read translations of, he doesn't seem to be that way, but now that you mention it...

Shibata-gumi 1 Posted February 8, 2010 I dont think Robo-kari has asperger. If the comment is about the way that he looks, he is near sigthed and tends to squint ALOT. Otherwise I think he's just a normal guy who has a very funny/charming way of psyching himself out.
ilovesumo 12 Posted February 9, 2010 On an Oyakata blog I read "First time for years, that a Japanese Rikishi won...cause the strongest Rikishi wasn't there ..." - guess who the strongest is - Shoryu...And he will never be there again (>_<)
Shibata-gumi 1 Posted February 9, 2010 Well I dont think he responds any different from other rikishi when he's interviewed...maybe I havent seen too many of his interviews. I do think he is very excited (because obviously when he's interviewed he just won his kachikoshi) but other than that I dont see him being that weird. I do know he doesnt like being touched by people...is that what ur refering too about interacting with others?

I felt the brunt of it as well.
Raishu 208 Posted February 9, 2010 Takamisakari is not moody. I'm of the opinion he is mentally challenged or has Aspenger syndrome. That's an interesting question. But couldn't we expect the press to put that into public focus if he really had Asperger's? Assuming that Sakari had been diagnosed with autism by a doctor/psychologist in the past. Assuming that Sakari had been diagnosed with autism by a doctor/psychologist in the past. The LAST thing you can expect the press to do is to publicly speak about an active rikishi's physical/mentalcondition. Even mentioning a flu can be problematic sometimes.. Raishu 208 Posted February 10, 2010 The LAST thing you can expect the press to do is to publicly speak about an active rikishi's physical/mentalcondition. Even mentioning a flu can be problematic sometimes.. Hmm, OK. But is there any particular reason? Or are Rikishi "untouchable" even for dirt-digging yellow press newshounds? Maybe I'm just thinking into the wrong direction here... Some on-topic stuff: I've found a video channel which has the one day tournament in its uploads section (strangely without sound and NO it's not on YouPoop). I'm not sure if I'm allowed to put it on the forum since this one appeared here some time ago, but it was removed shortly after it had been posted. If anyone is interested, just send me a PM and you'll get the link ASAP.

It's got to be a local thing-not only sumo, it's been discussed in the past and as I am not a Japan resident, I can't help you too much with the reasons behind this, but the whole "let's frankly talk about your illness" thing is a strange concept in Japan, AFAIK.
