The new Baruto

Recommended Posts

Well, Baruto is on the roll and he knows it. He seems to have much stronger mentality than Kotooshu and Miyabiyama for that matter. He will pull it.

Well, that goes without saying. The same is true of the average cheeseball. I'm just saying that there are no guarantees when facing a relatively canny opponent. Even Hakuho might lose one over the next three days.

I wouldn't give Baruto 3 more shiroboshi just yet.

He needs two. I would even go out on a limb and say he needs one.

I thought 13 wins and staying in yusho race were requirements? To be safe, he still needs one out of last two. Considering that Asashoryu is not there any more, it sounds reasonable . With 2 yokozunas they could cut him a little slack and settle with 12, but with only one top guy, bar is set higher.

Last win is always the hardest. Pressure is on.

Since Hakuho was the first one to beat him, they cant accuse him of not having been in the yusho race. I think they should promote him even if he lost his last 2 bouts, but I doubt that he will lose both of them...

I think the speculation can stop now.

Tomozuna Oyakata: "Baruto is really strong. You can't say that 12 wins are not enough. At this point, I see no obstacles for his promotion!"

The usually subdued Musashigawa rijicho : "The content of his sumo is good-he has the power of an Ozeki. It is Ozeki Sumo"

Two of the hardliners are saying it- it's a done deal. No ifs and buts.

There is already talk of a special rijikai meeting.

I heard some comments like this from sewanin today!

I think that finally Baruto really did want this and he proved he can do it!! (Blinking...)

I suppose that Baruto has secured Ozeki promotion and Jun-yusho now. It is time to drink champagne and wish him to be number one Estonian sportman this year. (Blinking...)

yep, it is a done deal now. I wonder if Baruto is signaling a European invasion to come? History might be repeating itself. First Mongols, then Europeans attempt to invade Japan. Good for the sport though.

:-S

I wonder whether this is how things are perceived by some in Japan....

I felt sorry for Miyaibyama today -- so desastrously beaten at this own game.

In before Fay says it: Tomozuna's not part of the hardliner faction.

This is really good news! Let start to celebrate! (Cheers...) :-S (Blinking...) But hope that he can wait with it until senshuraku!

Be that as it may, do you think that 12 wins will not be enough, even if he loses to Kotoshougiku?

"I think that I will be properly hearing from the Judging Department soon..", added Musashigawa rijicho. Tomozuna Judging Deparmenter said he intends to convene the members for "discussions" soon.

No, that's not what I meant to imply with my comment - just that he's not generally lumped in with the Musashigawa show. If you were thinking of his "13 wins or bust" comment before the basho - that's just the usual saber-rattling that anyone in the position of chief shimpan has to engage in, IMO. Anyway, 33 in 3, 45 in 4, and all that with convincing sumo in the last two basho - no, I'm not surprised they're saying what they are saying.

That will make it six consecutive successful ozeki runs without a yusho won, BTW. (Consider this a reverse jinx in favour of Baruto, if you want. Kotooshu and Harumafuji ganbatte!)

Kotooshu said after his ozeki promotion that Bulgarians were the ones who stopped Mongol surge into Europe and he is metaphorically repeating the history on the dohyo. It is up to you which way you want to get it.

Interesting comment, from someone who's done not a lot since his yusho - and even that under suspect conditions. To use hockey terminology, as a goaltender he's let a few go through the "five-hole".

Finally allowing himself to smile backstage. Is anyone else reminded of Akebono? Baruto seems to have found his new niche..

"Ozeki Baruto" sounds pretty good.

The only bad thing about the new Baruto is that he likely won't be Baruto. Anyone think he will be able to keep his shikona?

I do not see any reason why he should change his Shikona. His Onoe Beya does not have any history and his Shisho was a mere one-time Komusubi with a local bound Shikona, so there is no incentive to give him a more traditional one. I assume he will stay Baruto even if he makes Yokozuna.

I think it's his shikona for life. A possible change hasn't been mentioned anywhere.

That occurred to me too, but no one's even hinted at it.

Maybe it'll happen on yokozuna promotion.

When he originally joined ozumo, he intended to go by his real first name Kaido, which sounds Japanese as is. Since there already was a rikishi called Kaido, they had to brainstorm for name ideas for him and came up with Baruto. I'm sure given a choice he'd go by his real name, but by now I'm sure he's just fine with Baruto as well.

Gotta say that, as far as (possible) name changes go, Kaido rolls off my tongue a lot better than Harumafuji (or Baruto, for that matter). Probably easier for me to possibly write/recognize in kanji as well compared to Baruto.

I agree, they overdid it when they chose Baruto is just a obvious attempt to refer to his home country, like "Kazafuzan", "Amuru" and others.

Just looked up Kaido as I suspected plenty of kanji combinations (e.g. as in Hokkaido) and actually I stumbled upon this very nice fit:

怪童

it is translated as " uncommonly big and strong boy" - well, it does fits his appearance but i guess it would not really be a very "Ozeki-ish" shikona
