Kashunowaka 300 Posted January 29, 2004 Juryo, Aki basho 1982. According to juryo.com and http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~AN4S-OKD/private/sumou/sma.htm among others, J7E Oko gets 5-10 and J7W Kotowaka also gets 5-10. On the next banzuke, Kotowaka is J13E - but where did Oko go?! My guess is that his record really was 4-11. Can anyone confirm that? To further complicate things, Takayama has Hakuryu listed as J7W (11-4). Other sources have him as J8W.
Kotoseiya Yuichi 3 Posted January 29, 2004 (...) where did Oko go?! You're sure he didn't change his shikona?
Oikeassa 0 Posted January 29, 2004 According to Chiyanofuji's site at http://www.chijanofuji.com/, Oko showed up again at Juryo-12 in Natsu 1985. He went 4-11 and disappeared again. Maybe he got injured in 1982, battled back by 1985, but just didn't have it anymore.
Yubiquitoyama 4 Posted January 29, 2004 (edited) Juryo, Aki basho 1982. I think I actually might be able to check this when I get home (although I'm not sure, I might have a magazine from that time), but my spontaneous reaction is this (and just what it sounds like pure speculation): The mostly used data on this on the web is incorrect due to the lack of actual ranking numbers on base data (sma, Sumo World) and in reality all records are correct, but the ranks are not. I think Hakuryuyama who came back from kyujo might in fact be ranked J3-2w rather than J4w (which I think has been incorrectly assumed) which results in Washuyama J4w, Wakajishi J5w, Kotowaka J6w and finally Hakuryu J7w (such as Takayama says). That in turn makes Oko, being ranked J7e, able to drop to Makushita before Kotowaka, even with a 5-10 record. Thanks for bringing this to my attention btw. I like to get mistakes corrected too :-P Edited January 29, 2004 by Yubiquitoyama

After 0-0-15 as J3W in Nagoya 82, Hakuryuyama's rank cannot be J4W in the next basho. Thank you! :-P
Kashunowaka 300 Posted January 29, 2004 I can add that Takayama indeed has everyone on the west side below Hakuryu one rank higher, so Yubiquitoyama's reasoning seems to be right.
Doitsuyama 1,185 Posted January 29, 2004 I have seen this mistake earlier too, and my solution also was to shift everyone on the west side one rank higher. I think it was just an error from Takayama-san in entering the data as he missed the J3w-2.

Kashunowaka 300 Posted January 29, 2004 What made you spot this anomaly and why do you care? :-P a) error checking of data and b) because I like to compile obscure statistics. B-)
