I forgot to mention that Hakuho's father, Munkhbat was silver medalist of free style wrestling at Mexico Olympic Games beside being darhan avarga or yokozuna of mongolian wrestling. (He had 6 national naadam champtionship first 5 of them in a row.)

Also Tokitenku's father, Altangadas was 4 time gold medalist of sambo word cup chamtionship and 1 time gold medalist of sambo world champtionship beside being ulsiin nachin or lower maegashira of mongolian wrestling.

Can you provide us with their names? I know I won't be able to remember them :-D but still... Is the right one a prospect for Ōzumō?

The 12 times champion's name is Badmaanyambuu Baterdene. The other's is "my man" Agvaansamdan Suhbat. [Last name, First name].

I doubt the avarga Suhbat would be a prospect for pro sumo, because he is already in his thirties. The picture is a couple years old, I beleave 2000, the year, he won the Naadam first time and these two were the finalists. By the way, I was wondering too, how he would have done in ozumo, because he was in his prime time very much like todays Asashoryu, very good technique combined with very speedy execution. One thing that has not been fully explained yet is the consumption of meat in Mongolia. Asashoryu once said he likes to do some serious Mongolian style meat eating and some travel reports by some rural Mongolia travelers also indicate that meat is very big part of Mongolian diet. How is this actually? I would think that the poverty that is also present in Mongolia in times of drought and losing of sheep etc. makes meat more extravagant food but is it still *the* part of a meal in Mongolia?

And speaking of which, do you eat mostly mutton or do you have a lot of beef and pork too? What about chicken? Horses?

These could be probably found on the net but I am curious to hear from native Mongolians views on this.

(but maybe this is just a fact for people living in the outdoors ....)

Mongolia had elections a little while ago. It has been basically one party state for 75 years and largely socialistic until the collapse of Soviet Union. Along with the collapse, ended also Soviet's help to Mongolia which brought difficulties to Mongolia in from of depression. MRPR party is the corner stone of Mongolian politics but it suffered a loss in the free election in 1996 to democrates. Evidently democrates spoiled their reputation a bit by being paranoid and attacking each other in search for corruption etc so in 2000 MRPR got the vast majority in MOngolian parliament again. They were supposed to win the 2004 elections too but Mongolians made a surprise turn and voted a lot for democrats (MDL) again. Now Mongolia faces a new situation with 2 parties almost equally strong. Co-operation needed. Both parties vowed to attack poverty, unemployment but democrates emphasized also human rights in their campaign.

Some analysts say that MRPR's relative defeat was party due to their overly aggressive campaigning. Some Mongolians who were interviewed said that "nobody wants to see them all the time for goodness sake" heh. So perhaps over eager campaigning wore the people out.

Mongolia has had some good growth in GDP. About 5% but you have such a harsh climate sometimes with zud (cold winter, dry summer combination) that things can get screwed fast when climate is unfriendly. Still about half of Mongolians lead mor or less nomadic life style but next generation must divert this even more to urban life. Asashoryu was worried about sheep and horses couple of years ago when Mongolia was struck by 2 bad years weather-wise.

Would be interesting to hear some more comments from our many Mongolian forum members about the future of your country and what new could this election outcome bring into your country? And if nomadic life style is fading little by little, what is the next emphasis? Mongolia has huge mineral resources so maybe that is one option.

And if some of the stuff I have presented here are incorrect...please correct me. All possible mistakes are involuntary.

Mongolians eat meat everyday! In the winter beef is consumed the most. In the summer sheep meat or lamb (Mongolians mostly eat grown sheeps) is consumed the most. At least everybody around me does. Beef and lamb are consumed everyday one or the other year around. Other meats include goat, horse, camel. Goats are consumed in spring time after herders get the cashmere. Horse meat is consumed mostly by wrestlers in winter time. Camels are consumed in winter also. Personally I never ate camel meat. Not all parts of Mongolia have camels. Chicken is for the wealthy I would say being the most expensive in Mongolia. Fish, pork are consumed minimal compared to other meats.

Mongolia exports beef and lamb to Russia. Horse meat to Japan. It will start exporting beef to Korea pretty soon.

Beef, horse meat, and camel meat are consumed in the winter time because it's only time you can safely store. It is pretty much one grown cow per family for the period of November to March.

Goats are consumed in the spring because they are the first to recover from harsh winter.

Whole sheep meat can fit in a decent refrigerator so it's mostly consumed in summer. Although you can buy meat by the kg from market everybody has at least one relative who is a herder. So it is cheaper just be the butcher themselves. Hey I can take care of a sheep.

Mongolia has population of 2.5 million and 25 million livestock so chicken is the most expensive. 1 kg beef is about $1-2 depending on the season and quality.

Mongolian wrestlers consume a lot of horse meat because it is believed to give you strength. I don't know if that has scientific basis.

Mongolia is interesting. I wish there would be more translated Mongolian literature around and Mongolian movies! Do you have any Mongolian classics that "all" Mongolians (who has access to TV/VCR) have seen?

Most of the world even don't know about our existence (specially the English speaking world).

Also, we Mongolians didn't care about the rest of the world, before 1990-ies.

Because of lack of interest from both sides, we didn't produce any English or other language movies and books about Mongolia,unfortunately.

There are very few websites posting Mongolian news.

....www.mongolei.de.... is a German website. But the news in that website is very irregular.

The guy named James Brooks from New York Times wrote few articles about Mongolia lately.

His articles are in www.nytimes.com....

By the way, your information about recent Mongolian election and generally about Mongolia is pretty accurate.

Since neither democrats nor the communists (now,the communists call themselfs as social democrats) won majority seats, the new parlament is still straggling to appoint a government.

(I heard rumors that Mongolia will send some delegates to Israel to get advice about forming a coalition government).

I don't know about the future of my country. Our whole history after the Great Empire is a story of survival between Russia and China, both countries we did create,actually (many may argue on this).

In some level, we did succeed to survive and keep our own way of life alive.

Our relatively well educated population , almost untouched natural resources and the prosperity of our great neighbors Russia and China give us hope in our future.

Horse meat tastes excellent. Kazakh people living in western part of Mongolia do very delicious horse meat sausage.

I have tasted horse beef, and it was great. But it's not something you see very often in Sweden either. I think there are still a lot of prejudices against horse meat. One type of horse meat is very common though: smoked horse meat in thin slices to put on your bread. The trade name in Sweden for that is "hamburger meat" ... B-)
