Shoryu vs Mickey news

Recommended Posts

Kotomitsuki arrived in Takasago and engaged into training bouts against the beloved Asashoryu. 12 bouts they had and Shoryu emerged victorious 9 times leaving only 3 wins for Mickey. Mickey said that he is getting the hang of Shoryu's sumo again. Shoryu said he likes to correspond with anyone's sumo with his own sumo. Such was life keiko at Takasago-beya.

"Only 3 wins"? That sounds like a huge success for Kotomitsuki, if you ask me.

I agree. Right now, I'd think ANYONE would have been very happy with three wins out of twelve against Shoryu, so I hope it will boost Kotomitsuki's confidence (which already seems to be heading in the right direction). Maybe he IS gunning for Ozeki this basho and next. :-)

Dont tease like that. I would love to see him make it to Ozeki. Love his style.

Well Kotomitsuki is a good keiko rikishi too so in that sense he shouldn't be fully satisfied with that 3-9 record. It is highly promising though that he indeed says he is getting the hang of yokozuna's sumo again. Maybe a direct reference to starting to put in good yotsu-skills against Shoryu. Too often he has completely lost in grip battle and then has been terrorized by Shoryu in morozashi or equivalently strong yotsu-advantage.

Kotomitsuki still isn't as strong as he was but maybe he gets there and then he'll be ozeki for sure.

3 losses ?????

Asa must be saving his strength these days.........

he propably doesn't want to give up all his moves in training (make them think that they have what it takes to win him..... (Applauding...) ).

remember that Kotomitsuki, at top form, lost to Asa in Hatsu in a very easy manner.

When it will count Asa won't allow any doubts of who is boss.......

Well, Asa just strarted serious keiko a few days ago, and said he needs 5 days to get back in shape ( "harmonize the upper half of his body with the lower half", as he put it..), then everything will fall into place.

ok now i can relax and dream about Asashoryu's consecutive zensho-yusho....... (Applauding...)

I too would love to see Kotomitsuki getting to Ozeki. He could, for my money, beat Wakanosato to it.

At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if the next Ozeki turns out to be neither of them. Of course, the question then is about who might beat them to it...I dunno. Maybe Kakizoe, he's the only recent newcomer that has really impressed me.

And people with a good memory may remember my half-jokingly predict a Harunoyama Ozeki run half a year ago...he's had three KK in a row since then. Coincidence? I think not! (I was stupid...)

'Really impressed me'

- via what - keiko & basho seen or wins etc posted? Both perhaps?

No, it actually was the average number of seconds it takes him to win matches, with his BMI factored in.

Hmm..now I am stuck with this dilemma of whether you really missed the sarcasm there AD or just a forced way to continue the zzzzzz-mode? (I was stupid...)

Anyways Kakizoe having impressed Kokugikan-challenged humans is as normal as cats' delecate landing skills. Kakizoe for ozeki? Well....gotta wait and see how he steadies his sumo when he is forced to static bouts against monsters.

Yup, I agree. We'll soon see how Kakizoe does when he has to prove himself against sanyaku-class opposition for a whole tournament, which should give a better indication of how far he can go. (I was stupid...)

At any rate, people were similarly impressed with Kotomitsuki three years ago and had him pegged as the next Ozeki (Tochiazuma and Asashoryu beat him to that, of course), so I'm just speculating about Kakizoe. For all I know, the next Ozeki could be one of the three Tsukedashi starters this month.

Mickey said that he is getting the hang of Shoryu's sumo again.

Since the days when Kotomitsuki was on top of Asashoryu, not only has Asashoryu come on a bit in terms of his sumo (In a state of confusion...) but his style has changed somewhat. Gone are the days when he had only lightning tsuppari and a few leg trips in his arsenal. (Sorry, I can see this is a bit simplistic, but I hope you get my drift)

Kotomitsuki has been called 'Data man' because he keeps stats on all his opponents and studies videos of their bouts so that he can make an action plan as to how to fight them. Changing one's fighting style, or perhaps more relevantly in the case of Asashoryu, using a wide range of techniques, may well be one way to foil this aspect of Mickey's approach. (i.e. he has an action plan, finds it is not working in the actual bout, and has no fallback plan).

De-geiko with Asashoryu is probably the best thing for Kotomitsuki in terms of rectifying this problem. He gets to try again and again, and eventually starts to win again. This must be good for his confidence also, particularly after their Hatsu Basho meeting. (Banning his tsukebito from looking at pictures of THAT bout!)

I would never have thought that Kotomitsuki had something in common with high jumper Stefan Holm ... (In a state of confusion...)

13 wins in hatsu is very impressive. Even if Kotomitsuki was only ranked at M4, he still saw the top rankers. Will this 13 count in an Ozeki run?

As far as his keiko with Asashoryu. I think Kotomitsuki can beat Asashoryu maybe 5 times out of 100. This time he happened to get 3 of them in the first 12.

And I can almost feel #6 coming on for the Yokozuna. (Riding an ATV...)
